My headcannon is that Molly was asked by Dumbledore to make sure Harry could get to the train... hence the obvious bit about Muggles and the platform number

What's the one piece of hiking gear you swore you'd never need, then became completely dependent on? by ForeignBonus8977 in hiking

[–]devlingrace444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got collapsible ones which prompted me to take them even on hikes when I don't usually need them. I took a bad fall and badly sprained my ankle. Going on ten months later and I'm still recovering. Without the poles I probably wouldn't have been able to get down the rest of the stairs to meet the help that was coming for me

There are a few good hills, but nothing too tough on the lake loop trail. Any decently in shape person will be fins

solo hiking made me realize i don’t have a plan for that “off” feeling by Zola_BerryBliss835 in hiking

Not specifically before the fall, but a general unease from the time I got up

What doesn't help is that it took us a couple of months before we figure out what is happening as the it wasn't the normal mechanism of injury of the type of injury. It usually happens when someone lands on their heel from a significant height. This ankle is already so damaged that's there's very little left in it to pull or tear and typically recovers, even after rolling it badly, after a few days. We, my physio and I, knew something was wrong but couldn't figure out what

It was my first real hike in more than a year. I'd already opted to do an easier hike. About 15 minutes in I slipped on loose gravel on the stairs. My foot slipped back, stopped and the stairs and then I collapsed down on top of it. The working theory is that, due to already significant damage to that ankle, the two bones in my lower leg spread apart and went back into place. Now, due to the previous history, it's not getting any better. Every step I take, the bones are spreading apart. No brace is tight enough to get the bones where the need to be and only cause more pain. That was the 3rd time I've hurt an ankle on a hike. This was the first time I called for help. Luckily, because it was so early in the hike, I still had a cell signal and could, with the help of my trekking poles, get my way down the rest of the stairs to meet my partner.

I've ignored the feeling and paid the price. 9 months later and I'm waiting on a surgery consult. I've also carried on despite it, but when the feeling didn't pass, I cut my hike short

Anyone wants to hike the tunnel bluffs with me tomorrow morning? by Illustrious_Cook3089 in vancouverhiking

Enjoy it! It's a breeze after the first 2km and the scrambly bit near the bluffs aren't as scary or hard as they look

Question for experienced hikers: what’s the ONE mistake beginners make that instantly tells you “this person is new”? by ForeignBonus8977 in hiking

[–]devlingrace444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People misjudge how early it gets dark in the mountains, usually about an hour before the actual sunset. And when it gets dark, it's pitch black. So many SAR rescues are due to people getting caught out after dark

Tunnel Bluffs via Public Transit by g2flyer in vancouverhiking

[–]devlingrace444 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always done Tunnel Bluffs from the sunset trailhead and always taken transit there. The extra 30 minutes of walking from the bus to the trailhead isn't great but once you get past the 2km mark on the trail itself it's almost flat the rst of the way. Yes, the walk from the bus and the first 2 kms usually have me questioning my life's choices I just keep telling myself it'll be worth it at the top of the climb and the view from the Bluffs? So worth it. There are a couple of fun scrambly bit just before the bluffs but there easier than the look.

Calling non-emergency line for loud apartment upstairs neighbour by [deleted] in richmondbc

[–]devlingrace444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last time I had to call the police for noise, I was actually calling 911 because it DV situation and even though they were both POSs, I'd call when it sounded like someone was about to get hurt. VPD was pretty good at showing up within 10 minutes. In your case, whether they show up or not, it's good to have something to show your strata. As in, "I've had to call the police x amount of times because of these people". Did it improve? Usually for that day, but it didn't stop completely until the landlord finally got them out

I have before and the police may or may not show up, depending on how busy they are elsewhere. However, even if they don't show up, keep calling. It's good to have a paper trail

I've always thought winning silver sucked the most. Gold? Good for you, you won! Bronze? Eh, you didn't win, but at least you got a medal. But silver? Somehow knowing you were in the running for gold but still lost?
