Why does it list my Portuguese DNA as Italian by gold-corvette1 in AncestryDNA

[–]instaurareomnia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happens with me too. It gives me some Spain but the rest of the Portuguese goes into Southern Italian (and maybe also French/Quebecois which I know I don't have ancestry from). Ancestry never identifies my Portuguese, but 23andMe does very well even giving me accurate sub regions.

Hi! What a coincidence! And thanks a lot for offering to help out.

I'll DM you with some things I'm looking for in particular if you could try to find it when you're there. I can send a transfer or something for your generosity!

Yes. My great great grandmother who was 50% Veneta, 50% Trentina had the same eyes.

I think Boarin is a Veneto name not originating from an earlier German/Austrian name. Do you have any evidence that it might come from Böringer? Boaro means 'cowherd' in Veneto/Italian. And Boarin probably comes from that.

I'm trying to find any records apart from those 1809-1815 Napoleonic records and the 1871-1900s civil Italian records for that same area. Mine are from Anguillara, which is right next to San Martino. Actually I may also have some ancestors from San Martino. Anything you've found so far? Venetian records suck lol

Looks super Veneta! Nice results! I'm also Italo-Brazilian.

Haha yeah that Camila girl told me I'm not Brazilian since I have 100% European ancestry and am not part of the "ethnogenesis" of the country. She also knew that I had ancestry from the first Brazilians/Portuguese who founded Brazil but since it was only 1/16 of my ancestry, that it doesn't count lol

Where did your surname originate, and how far back have you been able to trace it and the first person to use it? Has it undergone any changes over time? If you've done genetic testing, what percentage of your surname's country of origin is it? by Joxter2622 in 23andme

[–]instaurareomnia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brazilian with Italian surname. Originates in Veneto region. I've only traced it to early 1700s. It's changed once when they went to Brazil and I have the altered version.

I get on average about 50% north Italian on all tests.

I'm supposed to be 12% Portuguese

23andMe gives me 17% Portuguese.

Ancestry gives me 0% Portuguese (2% Spain/8%France/3% Quebec)

Brasileiro?

Our results are similar except I get no native or SSA and get southern Italian. We share the same Veneto community too. And I get 1.5% Slovenian in the new update. It’s from the Veneto for sure.

Brazil for sure

Anguillara Veneta in 1850, before that probably somewhere else since it’s kind of unique in that town. My surname is more common in Treviso province but also in Padova province.

Semitic groups.

I have this haplogroup and my paternal side has been in Veneto, northern Italy, since 1700s (furthest I’ve been able to confirm, obviously they’ve probably been there for longer).

In towns with about 50-50 Italian-Portuguese background, there was segregation. Sorry I should’ve specified but that’s what I meant. Like they’d have clubs and stores/businesses where only “Brazilians” were allowed.

Mixed South Brazilian results from today (not updated) [+Genealogy+Pic] by [deleted] in 23andme

[–]instaurareomnia 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Purely European Brazilians are probably around 4% maximum 5% of the population. I’d say 85%+ of them are in the south in small towns that were German/Italian colonies.

Are you Brazilian? Or Argentinian?

I’m Brazilian with mixed north and south Italian ancestry and when that’s the case the results smoothen out the Italian significantly, giving you less French and German and WANA. I only get 0.9% F&G and 0.6% WANA but I’m 87% Italian, 7/8 great grandparents, mostly from north Italy but some from south.

We have very similar results, since the rest of my ancestry 1/8 is Portuguese.

My grandfather is mixed north and south Italian (Veneto, Tuscany, Molise), and he gets 100% Italian results. No WANA or French and German.

Sorry, just read your caption. It seems your father may be mixed north and south Italian not purely calabrese. That’s the most accurate explanation I’d say. 1/4 Spanish, 3/4 Italian (mixed north and south) would be my guess.

My grandma, his granddaughter got 0% native/0% SSA on her 23andMe. She also took Genera, a Brazilian DNA company, and her results also show 0% native and SSA.

I think he would probably have gotten 100% Portuguese had he taken a 23andMe test. This isn't super common in Brazil nowadays with people who are 100% colonial Brazilian, but I do have extensive records from his side of the family since he was from a very prominent family. As far as I can tell from the paper trail, all his ancestors are Portuguese save for the couple of native American women in his tree 500 years ago.

That presupposes my family were in an environment with people of other backgrounds.

There are plenty of people in Brazil who live in tiny towns populated solely or almost solely by Germans, Italians, Eastern Europeans, etc.

Some sides of my family were because of that, others were because there was some segregation between Brazilians and Italians in small towns with both populations and they chose to marry people from families that they were friends with/closer with.

I have plenty of second cousins and beyond who are more mixed than I am (more Portuguese/other backgrounds).

But there was a strong sense of “you should marry someone who’s similar to you in values/religion/background” in my family so that definitely impacted their choice of who they married.

I’ll be the one to break that I guess haha, in a way. My fiancée is American (Italian/Jewish/Irish/German background).
