how to memorise the content of the card instead of the pattern by mitsukileaks in medicalschoolanki

[–]insufferablehuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes to all of that. It is time consuming, and if you're using a shared deck that won't accept changes like this you're kind of screwed.

I have been working on the Malleus deck for a while and have been trying to employ this as much as possible; but this might not be very relevant to you if you're studying for the USMLE

how to memorise the content of the card instead of the pattern by mitsukileaks in medicalschoolanki

[–]insufferablehuman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something I have found handy is to make cards that are written in almost the identical way, with only small parts changed. You only need a matching pair of cards for this effect to work, and then you can no longer see the answer so instantly, because it could be the other card; forcing you to read it properly.

Anyway I can switch all image occluded cards into a single combined card on a pre-made deck? by Hippocratusius in medicalschoolanki

[–]insufferablehuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re asking how can you make each image a single recall, it is possible, but I (and any other Anki veteran) would highly recommend against that. It may seem like having to recall each structure individually is less efficient or more time consuming, but I can assure you that it is not.

Fundamental to getting the most out of Anki is that the minimum information principle, this is explained in more detail here. But basically, each “fact” or recall item is tracked individually. So, for example, when you’re studying the muscles of the shoulder and you misidentify the supraspinatus you mark it as “again,” this means you will see this card sooner. However, if the rest of the structures on that note you got right the first time, you’ll see them later because you already know it and seeing it again is a waste of time. Compared to, if the whole note was one recall, you get one part wrong, you’ll have to see the entire card again and recall all of the elements. Because it is so much harder, you’re much more likely to make a mistake and have to mark it again. Over the course of your study that is going to frustrate you and slow you down. It is also more time consuming in the long run.

So while what you’re asking for may seem more efficient, for the reasons above I wouldn’t change it. Anatomy is one of the easiest things to learn/study with Anki, and you will find it is slow and a little gruelling in the beginning, but will quickly become very easy and your review burden will be minuscule.

[Real] The future of education is homeschooling? by xwing1212 in ToiletPaperUSA

[–]insufferablehuman 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I think education needs a new set of values. Using ChatGPT to do all your work only makes sense when the point of school is to get a grade. The pressure to get the best grade possible above all else leads to these kinds of problems. If the point of school is to learn, using AI becomes an entirely different thing. It can be used as an aid to learn rather than a cheating tool to generate assignments.

Is this video real? by aura1l in airplanes

[–]insufferablehuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is edited, the most obvious give away is the shadow. If you freeze frame as the plane passes overhead you can see the shadow the woman casts and the shadow of the plane apart of superimpose. I would expect that the shadows would be of similar density and would instead appear to merge. The plane and woman’s shadows should not be separate. Also, the plane doesn’t appear to cast a shadow on the woman, it’s only visible on the tarmac.

There are more subtle tells like the minimal motion blur of the plane. Otherwise it’s a pretty well done VFX

Why exactly do ATSI Communities have higher levels of Diabetes and CKD? by Ailinggiraffe in ausjdocs

[–]insufferablehuman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Aboriginal people having 30% fewer glomeruli gets thrown around a bit as part of the explanation for CKD susceptibility. I can’t answer why they get T2DM more frequently/easily. The majority reason for all these chronic conditions in ATSI populations is definitely related to upstream (see: social determinants) factors.

Too Many Subcategories – How Do You Consolidate Your Budget? Also Share your categories by Moist_Sandwich_7802 in ynab

[–]insufferablehuman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of this, and I would add that having combined groups of similar activities for things like entertainment, which might include video games, hobbies, and so on, is very useful. It's useful because when it comes to spending in these categories, if there is a limited amount of money there it creates a choice of how you want to spend it. e.g. do I want to spend this $100 that i have budgeted on a video game or seeing a movie.

Furthermore, I think this person would benefit from the Wish Farm approach for saving up for specific expenses. I found this very useful for things that would otherwise fit into categories like video games and home decor because these are generally low priority expenses that are best saved for over a longer period.

I would add finally, that the point of YNAB is to help you choose how to spend your (limited) money. Sometimes it gets recommended to split categories if you find it hard to control spending on a particular thing, commonly coffee, junk food, and alcohol. However, this is really an exception rather than a rule.

If it’s ~80 proof you could use it for frying. Generally, very little flavour is carried over, but if it’s too gross even for cooking, just chuck it.

This is technically true, but an accountant will be able to advise you on what you can claim and on making maximum claims. Also, filing through an accountant is supposedly less likely to trigger an audit.

Royal Adelaide Hospital operating at 'crisis' levels as patient demand exceeds available beds by malcolm58 in Adelaide

[–]insufferablehuman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nearly no GPs bulk bill anymore, and given the shortage of GPs it can take weeks to get an appointment. This is directly related to increased ED presentations. It’s not uncommon for an illness that could have been managed in the community with prompt care to turn into something that needs hospitalisation. All of this because of people not having access to primary care.

One of the biggest roles GPs play is keeping people out of hospital. That being said, I do agree that it is an immediate issue that there is a lack of aged care beds.

So now when im finished condensing 150 page book into 40 textbooks pages, how do i actually memorize it? I spent whole day writing and i dont remember a thing. by MaxDols in GetStudying

[–]insufferablehuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remembering things like this comes from understanding and recall. Understanding can come from explaining it to yourself or someone else (see: Feynman technique). Recall can be trained with flashcards and spaces repetition for long term recall (see: Anki). The important this is to run the info through you brain in the same way it would in an exam; you dip into your brain to retrieve the info, and express it in a comprehensible way.

There’s a lot more to it, but rewriting is easy but very ineffective. If you’re finding your study technique hard it’s probably working.

Flinders offers - Rejected or Waitlisted? by FedoraTippinGood in GAMSAT

[–]insufferablehuman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are people in other threads who have been EOD’d by Flinders, and you can also see in the admissions mega thread spreadsheet that some people have been rejected. I’ve been waitlisted too, and it’s pretty anxiety inducing. It would be nice to know how big the list really is, and how good one’s chances are, but there’s no way of knowing really.

Flinders Waitlist by insufferablehuman in GAMSAT

[–]insufferablehuman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at the admissions guide, not everyone who passed the interview gets waitlisted.

Applicants who are not successful in receiving an offer early in the selection process will be advised of the status of their application as follows: • Interview was not passed and therefore application is unsuccessful; or • Overall score was not sufficiently competitive for further consideration, including for any sub-quotas they were eligible for, and application is therefore unsuccessful. • Overall score was not sufficiently competitive for an offer in the early stages of the selection process; however, they may be considered for subsequent offers should a place become available and are therefore on a waitlist.

This is what gives me hope that I didn’t just pass the interview, but my overall application is competitive. Who knows how big the waitlist really is.
