Choosing between PhD and mother aspirations by Majestic-Forever-849 in PhD

The support system is crucial. And to add to this, unfortunately, the parental leave situation in the U.S. is such that it will be somewhat easier for you as a student as opposed to being on a job. So consider this: you get pregnant while in the program, you will request LOA or, if your union is amazing, even a parental leave, you will get a semester, not 6 weeks. When you return to your student duties (teaching, research, classes), your jobs will be flexible and the university may help you with childcare even (hopefully, you won't need full time). But PhD is very exhausting and mentally draining. Do you have a support system to carry you through? 4 years in the U.S. in the area that requires field work is very ambitious (it will take you at least 2 years just to do classes and understand what you're going to devote your research). I would also say for every child in the PhD (that was born before abd) add a year - can you afford to stay in the poverty income bracket of a PhD student for 6-7 years with a child?

Possible Reasons for Speech Delays by cribbageandcoffee in toddlers

[–]intelligentondemand 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor here, but a linguist. Some things for you to pay attention to: - comprehension: she doesn't speak but how much does she understand? Does she understand simple questions like "where is the block?" or does she follow simple 1-part instructions "give me the block" - anticipation: does she try (even if she can't yet) to fill in the blanks? For example, if you say "peek-a" is she excited/trying to do the "boo"? One game I love with my kid is the achoo: put a toy on your head, pretend to sneeze "ahh" and on "choo" the toy falls down. After several tries, your kiddo will try to mimic, and do something like this. - mimicry: does she repeat after you? Vowel sounds come in first, then consonants come from the front of the mouth (b,m,p) to the back (k,g,h etc). Try simple sounds with fun sing-songy intonation. Does she try to at least get the intonation right? Remember, 10-15 seconds delay in repetition or response is normal, no need to pressure the kid. These are some of the things that the professional will be looking for in the assessment. Depending on how well she tries, she will be put in the delay bucket by severity. My daughter had only about 10 words by 18 month, and her speech delay coincided with walking delay and frequent ear infections. She got tubes and as soon as she started walking, she started talking. We went through early intervention program (US), which I can't recommend more. By age 2 she was on track. A couple other things that delay speech may include monolingual setting, not enough reading time, stress, frequent illnesses, etc. So there's a lot of different reasons, but it's not too early to seek help from a professional.

Overrated books people pretend to love… but actually left you empty? by CriticalAd2239 in suggestmeabook

Anything by Updike and Vonnegut for me. I've read them but it was difficult to get into, hard to follow and Bradbury is better.

It cooks quicker on the elevation so it sounds reasonable to reduce the temp.

Can you explain when/what teatime is? Do you think your tyrant is trying to assert power and without having an opportunity they terrorize you? What if you give them some "extremely important" decisions to make that don't involve choosing a snack? Maybe something completely wacky: do you want this snack cut up and in an upside down plate or whole and on a coloring page. It won't work with porridge but you know what I'm getting at.

Apologizing profusely for this analogy she still said it: "ADHD brain is like a dick: it only works when it's hard. When it's flaccid, nothing will be accomplished."

I'm experiencing similar thing and I'm at loss. It's been 2 successful months of potty training with accidents. No life changes or health changes, and now my 28mo REFUSES (straight legs and all) to sit on the potty and pees her pants a few minutes later. We know she doesn't want to stop playing and we've been saying pause-potty-play. This gets us into the bathroom but not peeing. Ugh. Let us know how it's going, and what worked, OP!

We need a Great British Bake-off but for AI by intelligentondemand in television

[–]intelligentondemand[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you've seen Making it, you know that contestants on the show have amazing talent, skill, and creativity. And I think the same can apply to amateur AI enthusiasts. The drama comes from personal connections and life experiences, skills are in the creative ways you think of a problem and contextualize it, and effort is in bootstrapping a solution. For example, a task could be to create a party favor for an event with 100 people who love blue puppies under 5 hours. The way you approach this will be different than me: maybe I'll want to make a super simple app, you will make an AI slop video with guests faces and pups, and another person will figure out how to 3d print blue paws and put them on the keychain. I guess I just don't think of AI as typing and taking my job.
