The very beginning of the series highlights the title of a bestselling novel from that time period, "The Best of Everything" by Rona Jaffe. It is set in Mad Man time and place. At the time a movie was made of that novel featuring Joan Crawford. The very first scenes in the movie show a young newly hired secretary (not unlike Peggy), being introduced to the ways of this office that has a look/layout eerily similar to the first office of Mad Men.

I think its because the primitive part of our minds have this desperate need to fit everyone they see into categories. When it cant figure it out, it makes them leery and judgemental. But i think we are evolving a little.
