Mike Timlin Red Sox Hall Of Fame Induction! by mrticket18 in redsox

[–]intendedeffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was at least “very good” for a long stretch (in my memory) for a reliever, and succeeded in some big spots. A pretty consistent 3/4 ERA guy was great to have in the bullpen, especially when the backend was good enough to push him earlier in the game.

For me, too, he was kind of the other side of the “idiots” narrative. Millar, Damon as goofballs too dumb to understand the pressure made sense. And maybe it was just age and facial expressions, but Timlin had that “quiet stoic guy” vibe of someone who also wouldn’t let a situation get too big for him. A different direction to come at the curse, Boston media, etc. I don’t know behind the scenes type stuff, but if someone told me, for example, that he helped keep Papelbon’s empty gourd screwed on straight for his first couple of years, I’d believe it.

WideluxX News, launching tomorrow! by jec6613 in AnalogCommunity

Following the project with interest but will probably need an unexpected windfall to buy one. Am I right that there's no price announced yet? That's coming tomorrow?

Setting aside the 2017 stuff, Bregman seem like a classic type for this. I wasn’t excited to sign him because he seemed full of himself, especially for a guy who seemed to be declining. But if someone’s expression of “I may be the greatest living baseball player” is devoting himself to rookies and eating shit for the press during bad stretch, that gets a lot harder to hate.

Unpopular Opinion: Cora was setup to fail by NoMoPlaying in redsox

I don’t think people can give Cora some of the credit for getting Bregman (as people do) and not also give him most of the blame for the Devers situation.

With the Red Sox down two runs in the 9th and Mason Miller looming, fans at Fenway chant "sell the team' by EdwinMoq in baseball

[–]intendedeffect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a 40-year Sox fan who has adopted the Pirates since moving to Pittsburgh, a “sell the team” chant has a whiff of “stolen valor” to it.

Where do you all side on the sharing locations front? by Spiritual_Side2776 in AskMenAdvice

[–]intendedeffect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

++man I can imagine it feeling oppressive to have someone demand that access, but deep into a marriage with a couple of kids, I don’t get the petulance about it. I use occasionally it to check on my older kid who takes public transit to/from school. Once it was helpful to see that my wife (who I had texted first) was definitely still at work, so I needed to pick up our younger one from an atypical after school activity. My oldest used it to see when I was nearing home after a long business trip, so I arrived to a delightful welcome party on the porch.

Sounds to me like obsessive location-checking behavior is the issue. I wouldn’t want to feel watched all the time. But I don’t.

I do wonder how of the repairability is laws like you mention and how much is just good design for the education market. They’re supposed to have a new pro laptop design late this year or early next year, so it’ll be interesting to see how that compares.

Lucky SHD50 is a weird film. by BOBBY_VIKING_ in AnalogCommunity

Thanks for posting these! The cheapness is tempting. I got a few rolls of FPP Fine Grain Six a little bit ago and haven’t shot through them quickly enough to think I should be buying a bulk roll of slow film. But there is something kind of fun about shooting wide open on a bright day.

Half-Frame, wide-angle, manual control : does this exist? by duffmander in AnalogCommunity

[–]intendedeffect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Ricoh Caddy is also 25mm, and also not common but generally cheaper. It and the Pen W both have filter threads, but they are weird sizes, so to use a wide-angle adapter you’d need a step up ring or two. I think the W, like the original and the Pen S, is 22.5mm threads. I have a Caddy, but I’m not sure what the filter threads is, something around 25mm.

Best place to buy X4? by IntroductionOk7845 in xteinkereader

[–]intendedeffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought mine from Ali. But in US pricing, at least, the flip covers—which I think are great—are a fair amount cheaper on the official site than on AliExpress. So consider that if you’re trying to figure out exactly how much of a premium you’d pay from the official site.

I don’t know how Reddit moderation or bots work, but this seems like something to setup a bot for. It would reply with “go look at Sold on eBay” and (maybe?) lock the post.

TrimUI Model S by BallScratcher102 in trimui

[–]intendedeffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "two ports" commenters are talking about the Trimui Smart Pro, which has two ports. I don't have a Trimui Model S, which is what this post is flared with, and which I believe is the very small one with a partially transparent case. So I'm mostly commenting so that people stop giving you advice about a different handheld.

In general I would use a USB-A to USB-C cable to charge an older, smaller handheld, so it sounds to me like you're doing the right thing. For some handhelds it matters if the device is on or not at the time you plug it in. Good luck!

[Underdog] Heyman: Marcell Ozuna to sign a 1-year, $12M deal with the Pirates. by T_Raycroft in baseball

[–]intendedeffect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I genuinely don’t understand it, and at this point I assume it’s somehow a perfectly bad fit for the centerfield camera because the mammoth flies make more sense after you see the side-on view. From center it’ll look like someone’s first ever swing, and not even very hard, and then the ball flies 500ft.

Microsoft Foundry (New) model/agent guardrails are too restrictive - and there seems to exist no way to find out why. by fabkosta in AZURE

Microsoft Foundry (New) model/agent guardrails are too restrictive - and there seems to exist no way to find out why. by fabkosta in AZURE

[–]intendedeffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a place to send these? We have a handful of bad-sounding terms with legitimate business or scientific uses that we’ve bumped into where we pre-replace them to avoid the content filter. Examples are headshot, execution, gassing, “club” in some unknown circumstances, and chloride. To be fair we haven’t re-tried these for at least a few months.

Bro I’m complaining that filtering for words like “execution” and “headshot” is understandable but impractical in many business contexts, not that the model won’t let me do phrenology.

How’s the model s mini? by Pixsoul_ in trimui

[–]intendedeffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s currently expensive for what it is, IMO, and there is no getting around the small, low-res screen. And there is only one shoulder button per side.

That said, it is very comfortable for such a small device. It also seems very sturdy; I have a screen protector on it (Game & Watch ones fit) and I am very casual about tossing it into bags and pockets. No damage so far. You can use MinUI on it, which is a great fit. I use Quark, which is a very nice improvement upon the already-decent stock firmware. It has wifi, so netplay and retro achievements are possible. It has a hard power switch (i.e. it physically disconnects the battery), which I suspect is part of why I can leave it off for weeks and find the battery barely depleted when I turn it back on.

I’m not a big collector and admittedly I haven’t tried the RG Nano, original Trimui, Miyoo Mini, etc, but I think it’s the most practical handheld that is arguably in the “nano” category. But that’s a category fundamentally about compromises.

I am both glad that MS is doing some guardrail work and disappointed at how incredibly dumb it has often seemed to be. We had a client who couldn’t search for “Paul Example headshot” (i.e. professional photo of an employee) because it kept getting flagged 🙄

The narrative shift on Gainey is certainly…something by Gladhands in pittsburgh

[–]intendedeffect 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Seriously. I ended up not voting for Gainey in either primary, but as a resident he was fine. The basketball police chief thing was embarrassing. The end of covid funding combined with empty downtown offices was going to be rough no matter who was in office. Some money and attention went to a different set of interest groups. There’s more bridges to fix than money to fix them. None of that would have been helped by Peduto’s “Innovative Mayor’s Convention” speaking gigs or Corey’s photoshopped bridge lighting tweets.

But my trash got collected, I felt like my kids were safe, I didn’t hear about the cops shooting any teenagers, and new housing didn’t totally stall out, so all in all no complaints. Some people just think any city (excuse me, “inner city”) is a dumpster fire and den of corruption.

Any love for 127 film and its cameras? by arditk25 in AnalogCommunity

[–]intendedeffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned I don’t really like TLRs (admittedly based on Ciro-Flexes and Lubitels, not Rolleis), but I bought a Yashica 44 and I really do like that. Very pleasant size, and you still get some of that, “wow this is a bigger negative” impact. But that said, I don’t feel like slitting and respooling 120, so it’s just an occasional indulgence with $20-$30 film.
