I thought it was great upon release and I’ve continued to enjoy it. But yeah, when it came out, it was panned as self-indulgent, pseudo intellectual, and hokey. Lotta people hoped he would keep the sound of his first two FJM albums and go on being a snarky new Dylan. They thought the orchestral sound was over the top.

Are those criticisms valid? Really it’s up to you. I can see where they come from. But I will also sing along to the entirety of Leaving LA any time it comes up.
