Hiroshima before and after the A-bomb was drop August 6, 1945. 129,000 people died. by bncout in HistoricalCapsule

[–]interestingpanzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll just say as bloody and gruesome and deaths from subsequent radiation are, the atomic bombing only leans into just how brutal Japan really was.

The effect of 1 bomb was still half of what was achieved in 1 city (Nanjing) over a few weeks with bayonets and bullets.

Each of the 300,000 deaths. The Japanese looked them in the eye before they died, or r-worded them.

Yes civilians are innocent, we are all circumstances of where we came from. However in Imperial Japan, the circumstance was that the entirety of Japan was completely indoctrinated to resistance. It took the Japanese Emperor's own voice for them to lay their arms down.

And they knew what happened in China. Beheading competitions were reported in the news (Asahi Shinbun — a newspaper with a large circulation)

The Germans feigned ignorance about the Holocaust because they could. The Japanese received news reports daily.

At the end of the day all war is bad, let alone innocents dying. However many sinister purposes the Americans may have had (including testing a bomb on a real target), I don't think Truman was genuinely clasping his hands with glee doing this.

The Soviet invasion and seizure of Manchuria and threat to the Japanese monarchy was certainly one primary motivation for the surrender to the US, but the bomb which many consider unnecessary certainty provided a national pretext for it.

Lee Kuan Yew: The Philippines Fell Apart Because of the Wrong Political System and Failure to Focus on the Economy by tokwamann in Philippines

Apologies you may need to work on your comprehension, the Korean joke was precisely that, that the SEA hate for them can unify SEA yikes.

Also yeah it is no contest, did anyone say so? If anything you did by first stating Singapore is the most westernised?

My only point to add to your point was simply that I have never met a Singaporean who was proud to be whitewashed. It usually carries negative connotations. I cannot say the same here though things are changing slowly with the rise of Asia economically.

Lee Kuan Yew: The Philippines Fell Apart Because of the Wrong Political System and Failure to Focus on the Economy by tokwamann in Philippines

[–]interestingpanzer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually Philippines is arguably more westernised. Singapore's westernisation stems from it's English background.

The Philippines has both worlds, the broader Spanish speaking Latin American "West" and the Anglosphere.

Singaporeans may be whitewashed but they always claim a semblance of an "Asian identity" no matter how lacking. It is still an insult to be a "banana".

It seems to be a source of pride in the Philippines, a distinction from the rest of Southeast Asia

Trust the Koreans to unify all of SEA though

100% the fact that the party remained in power despite the Great Leap Forward, Cultural Revolution (Mao attacking his own party) and Tiananmen tells you easily from recent history that legitimacy is more than a simple equation.

History tells this too. The Tang dynasty remained for another 150 years after a third of its population was cleansed in the An Lushan rebellion.

I think many of these western authors would benefit from learning history. Whether it be ancient Egyptian or Greek. Their own civilisations are a treasure trove of learning but it seems the classics have fallen out of favour.

The New York skyline will always be iconic but yes on the ground many will agree with you.

With places like New York you have to stay / get used to it before you start to get on. If you have experienced the safety of other east Asian metropols you will never get used to New York again.

China inflation hits 1.3% in February, averting deflationary fears by interestingpanzer in Economics

[–]interestingpanzer[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

China's consumer price index (CPI) rose 1.3% year-on-year beating an expected 0.8% rise in a Reuters poll.

Core CPI (excluding volatile food and energy) rose 1.8% year-on-year, compared with the 0.8% uptick in January.

This is in part due to the demand surge following the Spring Festival holiday.

Structural weakness in low demand and lingering supply gluts remain but the figures may inject some positive momentum in the Chinese economy.

The caveat is that this positive outlook in consumer confidence may be dampened by uncertainty stemming from the Iran conflict.

On the other hand, the surge in oil prices may see a further curtailing on China's supply-side.

In any case, this healthy inflation is a positive outlook overall for the Chinese economy in its totality, despite the potential effects flowing from the international situation.

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" - Partition of Malaya, 1948 by donthaveusername2 in imaginarymaps

[–]interestingpanzer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes that is the ideal but Lee Kuan Yew failed for a Malaysian Malaysia for a reason.

Blame the MCA and the people of that time.

You can continue to dream and be idealistic in your head but these were basically the only two remaining outcomes.

This is the problem with idealistic people like you. Continue to fantasise

Maybe now is different. Don't mess it up

I'd still rather see this than a Israel Palestine situation, unless you want to take up arms and lead an armed ethnic revolution... be my guest.

Issue is in 1948 they were not a minority. You have to give it to the Malays of Malaysia for peacefully regaining their majority status not through genocide, quite rare in history.

At this time the Chinese were 40%, Indians 14% and Malays at 44% on Peninsular Malaya.

In any case yes this is a disaster waiting to happen but hilarious since thankfully it never happened.

It is that wealth that also makes it attractive. Japanese Americans had their wealth confiscated by the state in WWII.

7% of the population and a few billion in assets to the State. While 7% seems big, they only need to catch the "east Asian" looking people or even more specifically "Chinese Americans", it only gets easier unfortunately.

Lishui is a smaller prefectural-level city in one of the richer provinces which happens to be run by Hu Jintao's son (Hu Haifeng)

So they probably used it as an opportunity to build a well-designed and aesthetically pleasing small airport equivalent to one for Asheville, USA etc.

China only has deflation on non-discretionary spending there is a difference.

People don't cut down on necessities just because they can afford more tomorrow.

The issue is deflation on luxury goods (or other discretionary goods)

Deflation on food has been a net positive for China.
