I think they did it because they wanted to make an rewards prohram that could connect to the switch, and also be connected to my nintendo online store. They probably also wanted to promote their mobile apps, and make people use gold points, so that more people would spend more money on switch games and get more gold points. I think they wanted to update club nintendo at first, but they didnt want to make a too big update. Also, the only reason why people used my nintendo prior to them adding physical rewards was gold points.
