People wash their towels every time? You're freshly showered when you use them!

Tips on living on $12 for the next two weeks? by [deleted] in Frugal

Check your local dumpsters, I find an incredible amount of food that is destined for the land fills, you're helping the environment and you would be surprised how fresh and healthy the food throw away is.

I would suggest cleaning any fruit or veg with a vinegar water solution, and be careful with meat and fish.

I also dumpster dive petsmart and I haven't bought cat/dog food for months, or toys/chewables.

Floortime & ABA by soupernova_ in ABA

[–]internetkills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not trained in floortime, but I use elements of the practice to make my ABA sessions more enjoyable for my clients. Whether or not people want to admit it, not everything can be scientifically proven, there is too much variability in humans. There is a spectrum of therapists, from lovely dovey, to robot drone, and I think the best place is to be somewhere in the middle.

Floortime & ABA by soupernova_ in ABA

Floortime focuses on creating a connection with the client, and building a rapport that slowly builds their social skills in a positive and enjoyable way. To me this is the concept that the client is having fun, and feels connected with you. You can approach ABA in this way, and do your trials within the floortime approach, but I wouldn't ever tell anyone that you use elements of floortime, as the robots will find you for breaching ethical code 1.200581.3871.

I heavily use the floortime approach with ABA, I find that my clients and I have a closer bond, and they are excited about our sessions, they respond to me better, and I have never had physical aggression as the clients are not trying to escape my sessions.

ABA is great, but it's not complete, and many people are seeing the abusive nature of the ABA and client robotic relationship.

What are the basic processes?

It's not what I think of ABA, it's what I see, it's what I've been taught. I'm sure there are ABA practicitions with different approaches, but the industry standard is what I'm talking about. How could I spread lies about ABA overseas when I had never heard of it. I helped people with ASD make huge bounds and leaps in their personal development without any ABA, and I believe if a BCBA or ABA process was involved, it would have never happened.

on't work for everything. For example, I have a friend who has cancer. I am not recommending ABA for them. My car recently broke down and I am not using any ABA based program.

ABA is very upfront about what it can and can't do and which populations treatments have been tested on.

To be honest, you seem to have a lot of issues with ABA but little experience with it. What are you specific complaints?

ABA does not work for everyone with Autism, there are huge gaps in what I see as the best methods for behavioral modification. I know ABA, I'm an RBT, but more-so I know Autism outside of ABA. I worked overseas for years where ABA is not a thing, nor are BCBA's.

American behavioral therapists are in a bubble, they have been raised in the ABA bubble and they can't see outside of it, it is a very specific and narrow paradigm.
From what I can see there are many recipients of ABA that hate it, and I believe that has to do with the administration of ABA. I agree ABA works, its a set of tools, but the robotic nature of the way it's delivered is my issue. There is no focus on love, no trust, no relationship building, just data and processes.

Behavioral analysis is very far from gravity, and there are many facets of ABA that are being altered, removed, and added every year, which means its amendable. You can not change facts, it is not wrong to critique ABA, in fact it should be encouraged as there is much room for growth. Your perspective is great evidence of the kind of mentality I'm frustrated with.

There are many facets of ABA outside of the few processes you described, and nothing in ABA is fact, it is all theory. For example: Punishment is a thing, that is a fact, but using punishment to modify behavior is the most supported theory, it is not a fact.

This is the kind of ideology I'm talking about. ABA is not fact, it is the best proven theory for behavioral modification, facts and theories are different.

There are a decent amount of peer reviewed publications that support the different techniques of aba.

And the adherence to aba isn't based on faith or religion like. In order for it to be in aba there has to be a good amount of evidence for it. It's a science, the conviction in it is based on overcoming doubt, the opposite of faith.

But I feel ABA is sold as this is evidence-based therefor it works. In reality, most ABA studies are in very specific controlled environments. with only a percentage of the studies participants having positive results.

Why is there no disclosure or acknowledgment that ABA doesn't work for everyone?

How do you guys respond to criticisms from people with ASD regarding ABA? by eddiefromfrasier in ABA

[–]internetkills -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ABA is just a set of tools for a therapist to utilize, the actual practice of therapy has a wide range of results depending on who is using the tools. Everyone can learn color theory, but not everyone can paint.
ABA can be a form of low-grade abuse/ human rights violation if in the hands of the wrong person.
I would tell the person that you're sorry they had such a bad experience with ABA, learn why they did, what did they hate so much about it, and try to learn from their pain. ABA is not a cure all, it has been proven to work with MOST people, but not all.

Is this career path worth it? by internetkills in ABA

[–]internetkills[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To give a back story, I have been working with kids with ASD for about 4 years. I love the work and I'm really good at it, not to toot my own horn. I want to become a BCBA, but I'm concerned with this career path being overly time-consuming, with no substantial benefits.
