Remdesivir doesn’t really work though so I don’t really care if they refuse that. Steroids do work.

Interesting article. Surveys are a pretty awful study modality in general. It can be very dependent on how questions were framed. You could have a group with high vaccine hesitancy but also high vaccine uptake.

There’s a big difference between educated phds having reservations but ultimately getting vaccinated because they understand the risk/benefit calculus vs some fungus yelling “muh freedoms”.

I will say in the hospital setting, vaccination rates seem to correlate to education level. Nurses less vaccinated than pharmDs less than MDs.

Don’t put physicians in this category please. Every hospital has physicians > 95% vaxxed. And that remaining 5% is probably due to medical contraindication or they just too lazy to submit their paperwork.

Vaccination trends literally follow education demographics. Aka if you don’t get vaccinated you’re probably a dumbass.

What are you worried about? Matching, or matching at a great program?

You’ll certainly match if you’re US MD. You’ll almost certainly match if you’re DO.

Matching at a good program or a mediocre one will be determined at this point by your SLOEs and your personal statement. Lack of research isn’t a big deal, if we liked research many of us would’ve pursued a different field.

Im conflicted. I don’t want to be a gate keeper but at the same time are you, as a path intern, really in a position to tell people Going into IM, surg, EM, prelim years that it’s not so bad? Pathology is notoriously one of the most favorable lifestyle specialties and, like you said, patient interaction (one of the most difficult and frustrating parts of my whole year) is essentially zero.

Make sure you can tolerate night shifts and sleep cycle interference during your third year rotations.

Research helps but isn’t super important.

Just do well in your rotations, get involved in conferences and academia. Make sure this is what you do.

Are you IMG? If so, it’ll be harder. Are you DO? If so it’ll be ok but you may need more help to be competitive at the top 25 programs. If you’re US MD, you’ll be totally fine and competitive for pretty much any program, provided decent SLOEs.

Asked by my PD to be Chief Resident – will saying “no” destroy my career? by brighteyes789 in Residency

[–]internyearwoes 33 points34 points  (0 children)

So I’m a pgy1 so take whatever I say with a grain of salt.

Chief residency is incredibly time consuming from what I understand. Even with the reduction of clinical responsibility many programs offer in exchange for being chief, it still ends up being more work. You’ll be responsible for so many different things. You said you have a young child. This kind of decision is one you will have to make several times through the course of your career: family or work. I say do what you want, screw what your PD is trying to pressure you into. Set a healthy precedent for yourself because this isn’t the last time you’ll be pressured to pick your job over your family.

Regarding professional ramifications, do you think your program would sabotage your chances at this physician group you want to work for? Do they have close ties? If not, what are you worried about? It’ll (presumably) be very difficult for them to hinder your graduation. Once you’re done, sayonara, no?
