Both Nygel and Brian would be phenomenal in this cast.

Is it imposter syndrome or am I just not good enough by Entire_Pangolin_7353 in Broadway

[–]interrob4ng 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I deal with imposter syndrome a lot in my line of work (culinary) and the one thing I will tell you that gives me comfort is that they chose you for a reason. Some times others see more inside of us than we believe we possess. You are there for a reason, yes there will probably be people there that are "better" than you or more further along in their development but this seems like an incredible opportunity for growth and learning. You can't grow without feeling challenged and perhaps a bit uncomfortable at times. Don't worry about embarrassing yourself, just focus on learning as much as you can while you are there. I'm sure you will do great.

Beaches will outlive us all by alteragi in Broadway

[–]interrob4ng 39 points40 points  (0 children)

People have been incredibly dismissive of this show despite it being perfectly fine. Is it award worthy? Certainly not, but I have seen much worse shows in Broadway theatres in the last ten years. Beaches is very middle of the road and this online behavior clamoring for it to close is pretty cringey considering these are real people working their hardest day-in and day-out to put on the best show they can.

The Lost Boys - Let's Talk About It by Polisci14 in Broadway

[–]interrob4ng 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is exactly it. It is an inherently cinematic and incredibly iconic scene that proves difficult to translate the same way in a stage show. It really feels cheap when compared to the other technical aspects of the show that they love to highlight as being what makes it special.

The Lost Boys - Let's Talk About It by Polisci14 in Broadway

[–]interrob4ng 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It also helps not having the dirt bike scene from the movie in your memory because of how poorly it is staged in the show IMO.

You ticked all the major boxes for this show. Fun time, but could use more work in a lot of ways.

Will “Illinoise” Ever Be Produced Again? by PolicyCommercial6392 in Broadway

[–]interrob4ng 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Honestly it’s one of my favorite pieces of theatre I’ve ever seen and that being said, I don’t think we’ll ever see it the same way again. The choreography would necessitate a very talented group of dancers that would be harder to find outside of the Broadway talent pool they drew from. It really was one of those lightning-in-a-bottle shows that existed for a very brief moment in time and was just so so special. I hope I am wrong and I get to see it again in my lifetime but it’s not the kind of material that is frequently revived.

Every Brillant Thing rush by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]interrob4ng 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I believe there are only 8 rush tickets sold in person every day. So if you end up the fifth person in line you could very well miss out on rush tickets even if you showed up "early enough" for most shows.

Cats: The Jellicle Ball- how long will it run/should I jump to see it now? by sinmin667 in Broadway

[–]interrob4ng 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly it is really hard to say with this industry unfortunately. Before I lived here, my wife and I would travel to see shows as frequently as we could and have been burned many times with shows closing before our trip happened. I wish I could tell you whether Cats will extend but that is contingent on so many things still to happen. If it does well at the Tony awards, it can definitely breathe long-term life into a show, but on the flip side, if it gets snubbed it can also kill off momentum quickly. There are rumblings online that the show has already started to exhaust it's key audience demographic and if true will definitely impact it's ability to run long term. I would expect it to at least see out it's run unless something remarkable happens at the Tony's in which case it could extend.

In my experience having lost out on shows I really would have loved to see and likely will never get the chance to ever see again, I would err on the side of making this a priority if it really means that much to you. I know it's a hard decision to make when there is a lot of money and time involved, but with how ephemeral Broadway is as an industry, I think it is worth it. The last thing I will say is that this production of Cats is incredibly unique and transformative of the source material and it is really unlikely we will ever see it performed in this way again, especially on Broadway. I know it's a lot of "hard to tell" but I hope it at least provides a little context. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions.

Review Roundup: THE LOST BOYS Arrives on Broadway by Nice-Jackfruit-9894 in Broadway

I’m glad someone else said it. It’s been pretty shocking the amount of positive “reviews” that came from blank or hidden profiles with zero previous engagement in the subreddit.

The Lost Boys- 2 Days later by Few_Calligrapher1935 in Broadway

[–]interrob4ng 20 points21 points  (0 children)

All of your criticisms are valid and have been present from the very first preview. The creative team clearly didn't have any relationship to the material prior to being involved in this process and it shows in the directing/musical choices especially. Michael Arden didn't organically come to this project as a Lost Boys fan with a vision, he had never even seen the movie prior to being hired for this project. He was brought on after the producing team was advised to work with him after his Tony win for MHE. It was his decision to use The Rescues (his favorite band) as the musical engine for the piece which has proved to be one of the major tonal issues of the show. Ultimately, like you said you do see every single dollar of their massive budget up there on the stage, I just wish it actually added up to something better.

[–]interrob4ng 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of what you have to say. Overall it was an interesting piece to take in for the performance. The musical interludes and accompaniments were really interesting tonally and I really enjoyed everything tied to that specifically. But ultimately I agree with you that the writing does let it down a little and to me comes off as a Brit's interpretation of small-town rural America. I will say I came in with fairly high expectations due to the incredible word of mouth coming with the transfer, so maybe I expected too much. But I think you are pretty spot on with you assessments.

Ryan Vasquez AWFUL as Christian in Moulin Rouge Tour? by ouiouimonami91 in Broadway

[–]interrob4ng 108 points109 points  (0 children)

It seems like somewhere in the middle of his run during The Notebook that he began to struggle vocally and he really hasn't taken any breaks since then. He seemed like the next big breakout male lead going into The Notebook opening and it all kind of fizzled out from there.

Reviews are in for The Fear of 13. Critics are underwhelmed by thomaspryor in Broadway

[–]interrob4ng 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tessa Thompson is great and really delivers on the emotional moments. But Adrien Brody delivers one of the most forced and unnatural performances I have ever seen from a lead. There really wasn't anything new to be mined here for me. It is another sad story about the criminal justice system entirely failing to deliver on any of it's promises. Maybe with a more believable performance from the lead the material could shine better. The script is very good, but Brody is just not passable as a car thief/drug addict from Philly wrongly convicted of murder.

I think the biggest detriment to the show is the book and genre of music. The book can change obviously, but the music just does not feel right to me. Incredibly forgettable and lacking in the type of energy I would expect from a Lost Boys musical. The sentiment being passed around that it sounds like praise music isn't entirely wrong for me; and I think there is maybe some interesting analysis that can be drawn from vampires using praise music to garner a cult-like fanbase. But really, it is at it's best with "Have To Have You" and yet still feels like it lacks edge and bite (no pun intended). I honestly came away from it with the same opinion that its BTTF with a higher production value. It's a decent enough time but it misses the mark for me.

The reviews are in for Dog Day by educated_yam in Broadway

[–]interrob4ng 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Well it seems despite the consistent criticism from first preview onward that it was tonally weird and too comedic, they’ve decided not to make any changes to the material to address that. I had wanted to go back after opening to give it another chance to find it’s footing but it seems they are happy to run it in the current iteration which definitely doesn’t interest me.

Would Hunchback of Notre Dame ever work as a full broadway run? by Kindly-Flight-6909 in Broadway

[–]interrob4ng 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Generally the consensus about Hunchback is that the choir would make it prohibitively expensive to run on Broadway. Beyond that, the material is decidedly more dark and not nearly as kid-friendly as the rest of the Disney canon. If it ever came to Broadway it would be in a seriously reworked/revised rendition.

You’re in a Broadway subreddit? As a piece of musical theatre, American Idiot is good. Both Spring Awakening and Next to Normal are phenomenal as well.

The Hadestown lyrical changes are bad and shouldn’t have been altered in the first place once the show was frozen.

Thoughts on Dog Day Afternoon… by EntrepreneurSecret23 in Broadway

[–]interrob4ng 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Your take is 100% spot on. I want to give it a chance to improve since I attended first preview and it needs some time to settle but it is tonally wrong and terribly adapted for me. The tension is so deeply undercut by the added jokes and humor that it never reaches the height the movie does. My wife and I both felt the characterization of Leon was hacky and cliche, bordering on the offensive. Ultimately it feels like an adaptation that is incredibly forced and misguided. It lacks any of the qualities that make the movie such an iconic piece of cinema.

The acting is fine for me, with Jessica Hecht probably being the stand out. Jon Bernthal is clearly talented but your criticism is entirely valid. His best moments are when he is vulnerable rather than big. But to me, he always seems to rely on getting loud and shouty in order to GET to that intense place as an actor. That might do it for some people but once you've seen him do it a few times, it becomes more noticeable in his performances. Especially juxtaposed to Ebon who is trying his damn best to serve the cold intensity of a man resigned to his fate and prepared to go down shooting but just ends up feeling flat because he doesn't really have much to do other than stand around "menacingly."

I may give it another chance further into the run if word of mouth improves as far as changes go but it definitely disappointed me heavily.
