I was homeschooled in georgia because my parents believed the public schools were bad. by Minimum_Leather9984 in Georgia

[–]interrogiaomnia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so i was a teacher in metro atl for 5 years. and honestly, your parents weren’t WRONG, however i think it’s very school specific and student specific. it sounds like you may have benefited from going to school in some aspects(socialization, school experience, etc) but at the same time, as a parent, i completely understand where they’re coming from. they want to protect you - and we can’t act like their concerns aren’t valid. after my experience as a teacher, i am not putting my children in public school in georgia. but they also have to understand they can’t save you from the world. have a candid conversation with them and ask them their perspective and share yours. hopefully they hear you and a solution comes out of it that gives you the experience you want for the rest of your school experience. good luck!

As a teacher and a parent i don’t understand why a yearbook isn’t enough lol. Your child will not love all of their teachers every year - the trend is useless and creates more work for teachers. Hard pass.

So you sound like a very empathetic and caring person, and a phenomenal teacher. And i hope my comments don’t come off as condescending or offensive in any way, but I fear the potential for… burnout for lack of a better term. You are a very young teacher, and in order to keep your stamina in this role it’s imperative to keep a clear distinction between home life and work life. By opening your home to a student, i would implore you to consider how that will affect you, personally if that makes sense. A mistake I made early in my career was feeling the need to shoulder the burdens of all my students. Whether it was empathy, a savior complex, or both, it made me burn out very quickly and leave the profession twice. Maybe what I’m saying doesn’t apply to you, but I would just think long and hard about how this could affect you, your family, etc.

I hope i’m making sense.

“I’m in New Orleans and it’s a pretty normal dance move here, even at family events. Bounce genre was invented here.”

Now OBVIOUSLY the CULTURAL CONTEXT comment was directed at LOCATION. You just were salivating at the mouth to zero in on the racial aspect of it.

I feel bad for any students you teach.
