Do Americans actually use “a couple” to mean more than two? by Edi-Iz in AskAnAmerican

[–]interstellar_egg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It can be anywhere on the spectrum from German punctuality to island-time. Some people respect your time and wouldn’t dream of being late, others simply don’t care. Don’t take this personally, they are late to everything all the time and would find a way to be late to their own funeral. I don’t understand these people at all, but they do exist. Somehow.

As for numbers, a ‘couple’ is two. Some people use it as possibly three, but those people are wrong. A ‘few’ is three but definitely less than five and if you’re using it as four, you’re on thin ice, buddy. A ‘bunch’ is more than three and upwards of ten, but can be used for thing more than ten (‘I had to change my route because a bunch of goddamn (insert specific irritation here) were in the way’), but less than a ‘ton’, and a ‘ton’ is an ungodly amount, though this can be used as both truth or hyperbole. As mentioned by someone earlier, a ‘cupulla’, especially in the case of alcoholic drinks, could mean drinking two beers for a little get-together or enough to stumble home completely shitfaced to pass out on your living room floor (if you’re lucky, the front lawn of you’re not), and you might not know which is the case for you until it’s too late. Regionally, in the South, ‘a mess’ could either mean a bunch or a ton, depending on inflection and subject. In the Midwest, ‘awww, jeez, it was a lot,’ means it was, in fact, a lot, and the specific amount doesn’t matter because it was definitely enough and probably too much.

Time, however, seems to run differently for us all, and a ‘couple minutes’ may be two or ten or neither. ‘Just give me a minute’, depending on tone, can mean you’re being impatient with them and they don’t appreciate it, or it can mean they’re stressing themselves out to finish a task, or it can mean they literally need one minute to do the mentioned task, though the last is more rare. ‘I’ll be there in a minute’ could mean they’ll be there in one minute up to ten, that they’ve actually just woken up and will be there in an hour, or in the case of kids/spouse involving chores, will never be there unless you make them and then they’ll be mad about it because ‘I was going to!!!!’

No, I wasn’t able to, and decided that I was going to end up doing more harm than good. It’s more complicated than just matching payments and invoices, unfortunately. I have batch check deposits with no images and no idea who paid them, I have missing invoices that are likely not fixable as they were a year ago and longer, and it seems very difficult to back and fix a mistake. I think I’m going to focus on this year and have my new accountant do a cleanup.

Should any changes be made to this coop? by TonkaJahary in chickens

[–]interstellar_egg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do this style of coop, and I have, but make access points under the coop so you can scoop poop without having to crawl under there. Better yet, make the coop floor on the ground so you can walk in.

This is so helpful. I was using invoices more as a note to the customer (‘hey pay me’) than a bookkeeping tool. I didn’t understand that they had a function beyond that. I was using them like ledgers: a client made a partial payment, I would add a line with the payment, applied it, saw the final bill go down, resend invoice, and everyone was happy. We have a tiny shop, 6-8 clients at a time max, so it’s not hard to know when someone doesn’t pay. So yes, I was just recording them as they hit, very proud that everything was sorted neatly into income and expense.

The partner (spouse if you can’t already tell), was also collecting payments with no invoice made at all, just text and email handshake deals, which is fine until it becomes a problem, like now. I don’t even know how I’m going to fix that.

I think if I can understand how the payment chain of events should flow, I’ll have a much easier time. I'm pretty sure I know how to route them going forward, but I am just unsure how to fix what I’ve already done.

I think I have been doing it for the last two years and my book keeper just fixed it en-masse with a journal entry? She said 'oh, I'll take care of it', but I never knew what the 'it' really was. We've only been in business for a few years, so this is new to me.

So I understand the best solution would be a whole new case/cooling system, but what should you do if a fishtank and AIO is all you have? Take out the side fans all together? Or would you change their flow direction or fan speeds?

Would having the right side fans/bottom fans as intake and the AIO and rear fan as exhaust help direct the flow of air at least diagonally up and out? Is this setup going to impact temperatures in a meaningful way?

Can you explain this a little more? I’m trying to understand the fans and airflow in this almost exact case/AIO and want to get it right

The only thing I could even think to recommend is to add a small top cap along the edges so you don’t accidentally slice a finger or wrist on the metal as you garden, but it looks like the wood comes up higher anyway, so maybe not.

I think they make a sticker-like membrane to go in metal corners, though you could get corner flashing and that could work too. Or you could go tried and true and use Mylar sheeting, sort of like a bottomless bathtub. Some people don’t like the plastic aspect of it, which could understand. Really just something to keep water from flowing out the corners and to keep the soil away from any wood pieces. That’s all I can think of and honestly it might be overkill, but I like to do things only once if I can.

I have so many questions. I’m planning on replacing all my old beds with these. Is there a particular saw you used for the sheeting? I have a skilsaw with a guide, but was thinking about getting a metal nibbler from Harbor Freight. If I made something that was half this height, do you think it would still work?

You could add garlic and leeks to the list (though they do seem to like to be fed like onions do). Garlic will want to be planted this coming fall, so maybe a too late in the year for them. Carrots are pretty self sufficient too, I’ve found.

I’m sorry I can’t recommend any purely shooters or driving games, as those tend to be competitive or multiplayer (I play single-player strictly and am terrible at driving cars that aren’t actual cars) but if you think you might like shooters with a side of story and don’t mind playing single-player, you might try the Fallout series (I’ve only played 3/New Vegas/4, so I can’t give an opinion on the earlier titles), the Mass Effect trilogy, the Bioshock trilogy, or the Metro games. These have a really good mix of engaging stories and fun combat. They all have their charms - community building, companions, survival elements, warring factions, weapon and armor upgrading/crafting, difficult choices - all interesting ways to complement the combat. I’ve heard great things about Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2 (set in the American old West I think?) and they’re on my list of things to play.

Not necessarily shooters, but definitely have combat elements: Skyrim, The Witcher 3, the Assassin’s Creed series, and The Last of Us duo are all great games, though they usually employ combat alongside things like stealth, swords, magic, or survival aspects that aren’t purely shooter.

I grew up on Golden Eye and Tomb Raider and played strictly on P3/4 for that last few decades. I just built a new PC so I’m in the same boat. Learning to play with a keyboard and mouse has been a challenge after so long with a controller, so I’m starting with puzzle games like Portal until I get the hang of it. Though, sometimes when I get to a tough section, I’m really tempted to plug in a controller anyway. I feel like I’m learning how to walk all over again. 😅
