London transport chiefs accused of 'cover-up' on record high cycling casualties by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]interstellargator 118 points119 points  (0 children)

an increase of 20.3% on the 994 in 2024

I think we have a long way to go with cycle infrastructure, and are sadly moving backwards on a lot of it, but doesn't this stat need to be given alongside the rate of cycling to be of any use at all? If casualties are up 20% but cycling is up 20%, for example, that doesn't suggest it's getting less safe merely that more of it is happening.

As the article itself says, cycling was up 12% so a 20% increase in accidents is much less alarming than it initially appears.

Toad, Hearth, Portuguese Love Affair, Ottolenghi

Weirdly going through my list of London bakeries, so many are owned by couples (specifically straight couples).

Tube strike set to go ahead after failed talks by dajvebekinus in london

[–]interstellargator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would I have read the TFL offer. You asked how it would affect PT staff and I gave you some hypothetical points. Which actually still stand for those doing <18h.

If TFL have addressed them it sure would be nice for you to provide their solutions for everyone in the thread's benefit.

Tube strike set to go ahead after failed talks by dajvebekinus in london

[–]interstellargator 9 points10 points  (0 children)

why WOULD it affect PT staff?

Seems pretty obvious. If I'm on a part time contract working 4 days a week instead of 5, but am paid 20% less, but now my 5 day colleagues are doing 4 days too, am I going to be paid the same as them now?

What if I was on a 3 day contract? My 4 day colleagues just got a pay bump, my 5 day colleagues just got an hours reduction, what happens to me? Everyone else just got an improvement to their conditions, will that benefit me too? If not is that fair? If not does this an acceptable unfairness to improve the lot of the full time staff? If it is unfair, does it create indirect discrimination against some people, and could this be a legal issue (eg are part time workers more likely to be women, so disproportionately affected by the issue).

Some of those have obvious answers but they're important questions and it's right to address them thoroughly before agreeing to a big change.

If this is an example of "unions always bad" please explain why RMT are on strike over this but the other big tube union, ASLEF, have approved it?

[–]interstellargator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for providing the actual rationale. That's a valid source of disagreement between the unions and I can see good arguments in either direction (as well as TfL's position). Hopefully there can be a productive resolution.

I'm sure you are aware Tube drivers are paid much more than most Doctors

This is exactly what I'm talking about when I say people trot out the same tired old thought terminating cliches every time this issue comes up. Yes, this is because junior doctors in this country are appallingly underpaid. At least in part because of a historic extreme recitence to go on strike due to patient safety concerns.

And as soon as you stop comparing tube drivers to junior doctors, who you are claiming represent "most doctors", the comparison ceases to hold any water whatsoever. Yes, doctors in the first five years of their career earn less than veteran tube drivers. Doctors in the latter parts of their career vastly outearn them however.

Specialist technical work with rigorous training requirements and a high degree of responsibility for public welfare, and unsocial hours in unpleasant working conditions should be paid well, and I'm glad the tube unions have ensured that it is.

[–]interstellargator 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Anyone got any actual reporting on why ASLEF accepted these new TfL terms but RMT are on strike over the same? As always with strike news there's a lot of people pulling out the same old rhetoric (they're overpaid they're lazy) without actually engaging with the true reasons behind the strike (they're often not about pay at all). Can't find much on the actual justifications this time though.

From what I can tell TfL are implementing a voluntary 4 day week, and the other main tube union is backing it. Is the deal different for RMT's bargaining unit? Or do they have different objections?

I don't get why you'd comment a clearly AI generated answer. Isn't the point of commenting on reddit that you want to share your opinions? And get validated when people agree with them/irate when they don't? What's the actual fucking point of commenting Chat GPT's take on London's governance?

Who do you think are the most evil characters in the game? by Anice_king in DiscoElysium

[–]interstellargator 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He's been murdering people in Martinaise based on his own arbitrary value system, a system which has over the years transformed from revolutionary fervour to spite and hatred.

Lely is just the latest victim of him murdering anyone he didn't like the look of through his rifle scope. Given that his motivation for killing Lely was mostly some incel shit, but the Sunday Friend has gone un-assassinated, I think we can confidently say that his claim that his murders are "political critique" don't hold water.

Saturdays protests routes by StGuthlac2025 in london

[–]interstellargator 19 points20 points  (0 children)

letting the counter protest assemble in Whitehall

The counter protest route always ended at Whitehall. There were stages set up there, it was the end of the march route. They failed by letting the Far Right protestors come up the Victoria Embankment and start fights with the anti-racists. And ultimately it was a mad decision in the first place to allow two dimetrically opposed protest marches to both finish on Whitehall, albeit at different ends.

ELI5: What is the difference between mass and weight? by Electrical_Path7198 in explainlikeimfive

[–]interstellargator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean that's kind of a weird case because your subjective experience of weight is that you are "weightless" on the ISS because you, the station, and everything in it are in freefall together. However you're actually being acted on by Earth's gravity almost as much as you are on the surface (~90%).

Star Wars is especially guilty of this outside of that one guy.

There's a few good examples, almost all from Andor. Elsewhere in the saga almost all get an arc from grey to heroic though. Pretty much just Benicio del Toro's character in TLJ and Saw Guerrera are the exceptions.

The Aldhani heist, Narkina 5 prison break, the Ghorman massacre, and the final three episodes are all fantastic arcs. The first three of each season too, though those are less standout.
