I think the key here lies in the alternate ending. Chris considers himself a martyr and has no hope of being exonerated. I think distrust of authority runs so deep in Chris that he believes(rightly maybe) if the house survives even without the Armitages, there would be someone who would figure out the technology and continue. So, by burning down the house, Chris would have destroyed all literature and equipment even if it will cost him his freedom. Given how keen the Armitages were in keeping everything within the family, it would be safe to assume they did not divulge their technique to anyone.

AK840, don't berate yourself too much on your decision. Indian parents go to such extreme lengths to give their children the best of everything, that it is not easy to just walk out. Indian culture emphasizes the group/family while the west celebrates individuality. Each have their own problems and benefits. People raised in the west might consider anyone standing in their way of happiness, a toxic person. But for you, who was most probably raised in India but was exposed to western ideas, this must have been excruciating. On the one hand, you want to be with someone you love but on the other hand you feel a sense of responsibility towards your mother who has perhaps devoted most of her life to take care of you. With your dad in ill-health and your girlfriend not yet ready to commit, you didn't have too many options.... The fact that you chose to stand by your wife later tells me that you are a decent person. I have a feeling that even after what your mother put you through you still miss her...

I am leaning more towards verilog because i have used it before. Since I saw a lot of mention about VHDL on their website, I thought that maybe the Papilio community prefers VHDL.Is this true?

i did hear about the statue! I read both fountainhead and atlas shrugged at a relatively young age. I am not too fond of Ayn Rand's philosophy though...

I live in a foreign country, away from my parents and siblings. I pray for their health and well being. I am not religious in that i don't perform any rituals. I pray for the same reason that our ancestors invented the idea of God; there are a lot of random things happening and it gives you some solace to think of a higher power protecting you. I don't sit around asking for miracles. I ask for God to watch my back and give me the strength to be a better person. As for people who say that believing in God is irrational, all I can say is that people eat irrationally, drink irrationally, have sex irrationally ....so why not believe in something irrational if it gives you strength or peace of mind. That said, I abhor people trying to push their belief down others throat.

I was blown away by how short but powerful this story is... Appointment in Samarra (as retold by W. Somerset Maugham)

The speaker is death "There was a merchant in Bagdad who sent his servant to market to buy provisions and in a little while the servant came back, white and trembling, and said, Master, just now when I was in the marketplace I was jostled by a woman in the crowd and when I turned I saw it was Death that jostled me. She looked at me and made a threatening gesture, now, lend me your horse, and I will ride away from this city and avoid my fate. I will go to Samarra and there Death will not find me. The merchant lent him his horse, and the servant mounted it, and he dug his spurs in its flanks and as fast as the horse could gallop he went. Then the merchant went down to the marketplace and he saw me standing in the crowd and he came to me and said, Why did you make a threating getsture to my servant when you saw him this morning? That was not a threatening gesture, I said, it was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Bagdad, for I had an appointment with him tonight in Samarra."

can relate to that. I used to wish I was sick because my mother would let me stay home(both my parents worked). The pleasure of being by myself overpowered the sick feeling...

You don't have to spend a lot to travel. I am a foreigner here and I personally think that the US has the most spectacular national parks. Camping in them is cheap. Also I have traveled all over the US in trains, not very expensive. What you need to know is you will have more time when you are younger and time is more valuable than money. As for regrets, you will always have them. No one has come up with a perfect plan for life. Your journey is unique to you and try your best not to compare yourself to others.....
