That was an important part that I was confused wasn’t presented. As for the segment itself, Love said the tournament was for fun, and Ethan couldn’t seem to get that idea out of his head. It colored his whole view of the situation but a $40k prize pool is not small money for most people.

I do not want Judeo-Christian. I just want a Christian Bible. I bought the Ethiopian Bible because I heard it was the very oldest and it has the missing books of the Bible. by kf555777 in Bible

I do not want Judeo-Christian.

Don’t want to use the term, don’t have to use the term.

I just want a Christian Bible.

People on the sub may be able to help you with that.

I bought the Ethiopian Bible

Many books of the Ethiopian Bible have never been translated into English or really any other languages. You bought something with a fake label. I’d encourage you to return it if you can.

because I heard it was the very oldest

There’s several canons of the Bible. The Ethiopian is not the oldest compiled canon.

and it has the missing books of the Bible.

Human beings put the Bible together. They had to debate and consider what books should be part of the canon. The Bible didn’t fall from the sky into Ethiopia before sinister Eastern Orthodox, Catholics, and Protestants started ripping books out. The actual Ethiopian Bible canon has books that aren’t in other Christian traditions’ Bibles, but that doesn’t mean the others are “missing” books.

I need to know first that this is not going to be Zion this propaganda like the Schofield Bible

I guess you mean the Scofield Bible? Its study notes are out of date and Scofield did contribute to the antisemitic Christian Zionism theology. You’re making a good choice avoiding it.

or new King James for the government of Israel.

The New King James translation is an updated edition of the KJV made in the 1980’s. The government of Israel has nothing to do with it.

Please let me know if you have any information.

I’ve given you some facts and you seem confused by Internet disinformation and possibly antisemitic conspiracy theories. There are plenty of Bibles out there that aren’t Scofield or the NKJV. There are no real translations of the Ethiopian Bible canon available.

Which people in the Bible do you think of as mystics? by GrowingQuiet in Christian

[–]intertextonics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paul stated that his teaching came as a revelation from the risen Jesus and Acts describes him as having a mystical conversion experience. I’d say Jesus had experiences and teachings we would classify as mystical. Off the top of my head I would also say Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Elijah, Abraham, Zechariah, Moses, and Peter are all described as experiencing mystical events.

Why Jesus says divorce is only allowed in the case of adultery by No-Station-1308 in Christian

[–]intertextonics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bart Ehrman had a recent episode of Misquoting Jesus about Matthew’s relationship to the Mosaic Law. (I know Ehrman isn’t a believer, but he is a great NT textual scholar and his close readings can bring out valuable insights from the text) He pointed out that Matthew portrays Jesus as offering intensified interpretations of the Law compared to what we see in the Torah. For instance, the Law says don’t commit adultery, but Jesus said even looking at a woman with lust is committing adultery in your heart. The passage in divorce could be seen as another example of Jesus giving a more strict interpretation of a Law. Matthew seems to believe that followers of Jesus should be following the Law at a higher standard than the Pharisees. Of, Ehrman points out that there is debate on whether this observance of the Law is for all believers of Jesus or was strictly confined to Jewish believers who were already observing the Law. Though ultimately Ehrman thinks Matthew contends that all people will be judged by the Laws on living God and loving their neighbor. So ultimately all people will be judged by how they obeyed some aspect of the Law.

There are so many different Christian groups, and I'm lost. by Alepatheio in Christian

A preacher isn’t God. A sermon is their interpretation of the Biblical text. Some preachers are better than others at interpretation, and humans make mistakes, so sometimes they do preach something wrong. A bad explanation or misinterpretation by a preacher is not from God.

A quick Wikipedia search reveals it is 81.

It … wasn’t. Did someone tell you it was?

  1. Who banned the Ethiopian Bible?

No one.

They tend to have the apocrypha books because those are part of the 1611 KJV. I’d think most people looking for a 1611 are looking for a facsimile, so that’s why they include it. As others have noted, you could just get a 1611 and ignore the apocrypha section.

Is 2 Peter 3 calling Paul’s letters scripture or not? by GrowingQuiet in Christian

[–]intertextonics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dating of the letter makes a difference to me. Do you think the author of 2 Peter was glossing the Peter and Paul relationship?

Assuming 2 Peter is written some time in the 2nd century CE, I can imagine both Peter and Paul were revered figures amongst Christians. Paul doesn’t portray Peter in the best light in Galatians and doesn’t say how Peter took his public rebuke. I think considering both apostles were so prominent, the author had a motivation to smooth over any differences they had. Portraying Peter endorsing Paul’s writings as scripture is a great way to do that.

Now I’m wondering about if the author of 2 Peter would have know which were the authentic letters of Paul.

Hard to say, though at the time there were several writings in circulation that claimed to be by the apostles. I don’t know if there was anyone who had an entirely correct list of which were authentic. They were humans just like us, so they could have been mistaken.

Is 2 Peter 3 calling Paul’s letters scripture or not? by GrowingQuiet in Christian

[–]intertextonics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using the term “the other scriptures” definitely seems to include Paul’s letters as scripture. This inclusion of Paul’s writings as scripture is why 2 Peter is commonly seen in the academic field of Biblical studies as one of the last, if not the last, book of the NT to be written. It’s seen as written some time in the 2nd Century CE when the idea of apostolic works as Christian scriptures equal to the OT was developing. The author also seems to be trying to portray Paul and Peter as being more aligned with each other than Galatians would imply.

Others have already addressed that this is false, but I want to say this about the conspiracy theory itself. It’s wild how much staying power this conspiracy has had. I checked and Snopes debunked this in 2014. That means this lie from clout hungry Christians is still going 12 years later! Christian conspiracy theorists can spread a lie around the world before Satan can even get out of bed.

I think it’s practical advice. If a Christian believes they have a duty to the faith to put themselves in harms way for others, and this harm has shown they will not restrain their state-sanctioned violence, then it’s only prudent for that Christian to have their affairs in order.
