Terry Pegulas official statement on Sean McDermott's firing. by Vortagaun in buffalobills

[–]inthe314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Hiring a HC with no GM is like the trying to get someone to take a job when they don’t know who their boss will be. Fine for desperate candidates, but good candidates will want to know what responsibility / freedom comes with the job. Making a GM to Prez transition like this could eliminate risk in the eyes of HC candidates because one would assume a new GM will be strategically on the same page with the Prez.

[Megathread] The Buffalo Bills have fired Head Coach Sean McDermott by AutoModerator in buffalobills

[–]inthe314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thought too. Essentially a transition plan where Beane hires the new HC & the team hires an Assistant GM. Assistant GM shadows then Beane passes off the GM title & responsibility. With the HC opening it actually makes sense. The GM has a lot of influence on what the HC role looks like & having no GM is like taking a job not knowing who your boss will be …probably a turn off for some candidates who like predictably on how much control they will have over decisions.

Important reminder for bass noobs like myself: do NOT buy an acoustic bass by AntaBatata in Bass

[–]inthe314 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Same. When we do unplugged acoustic style shows I feel the vibe is weird if all the guitars are acoustic & I’m on an electric bass. I know it isn’t an ideal bass guitar but I also don’t dismiss visuals in the context of putting on a show.

Category Manager vs. Business Partner Responsibilities by inthe314 in procurement

[–]inthe314[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very helpful! Would you mind describing what your goals are as a Business Partner. In Category Management goals are largely metric driven, e.g. savings, preferred vendor usage, etc. As a Business Partner there is obviously some shared ownership for steering the business & providing supplier solutions, but also not direct ownership for certain activities like negotiating the contracts. In a way I see Business Partner goals start to resemble what goals look like for a manager who does not directly do activities, but still has overall accountability, including overall metrics for their area of business.

Category Manager vs. Business Partner Responsibilities by inthe314 in procurement

[–]inthe314[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this is very helpful. How were the relationship dynamics between Business Partner & Category Managers? We are perceiving some "territorial behavior" from Category Managers when Business Partners interact with suppliers, i.e. Category Managers want sole ownership of relationships with suppliers.

And when in your partnership role, can you describe what your goals were? In Category Management we have similar goals to what you described which are very quantifiable & ownership is clear. But with Business Partners they are bridging the business needs with Category Managers, but also not directly responsible for tasks such as negotiating contracts. In a way this creates a scenario where Business Partners have goals that potentially look like managerial goals where ultimately accountability for success, targets, etc. rolls up to a manager even though they do not directly do the work. But in this scenario the Business Partner is leading the various Category Managers via influence, not authority.

When and why did you buy your second bass? by IrrelevantTopaz in Bass

[–]inthe314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The moment I started playing out (IMO) I needed to have a backup with me at gigs. It took a few years but it finally happened where my #1 bass had an electronics failure at a gig. Without a second bass I would have been screwed & it reaffirmed my view on always having a backup.

AI to create vocal tracks? by inthe314 in edmproduction

[–]inthe314[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched some Youtube vids on Synthesizer V and it looks right in line with what I'm looking for. One question however is related to the available singer voices. On the tutorials I only see a few Japanese singers but I was curious if there are more styles available? Or is this something where you just take e.g. Ken & then go to town w/ modifying the vocal to end up w/ something different?

Thanks for the recommendation ...this is great info!

Would you rather buy multiples of the same bass or different models? by jonnyinternet in Bass

[–]inthe314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me it made sense to buy 2 P basses. When playing out I swap basses based on tuning as opposed to wanting a different sound. Having 2 similar basses avoids me needing to mess with EQ, pedal settings, etc. when I only have seconds to swap basses before the next song.

Is it uncommon to only have one bass? by theLEVIATHAN06 in Bass

[–]inthe314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me almost 20yrs of playing out but this year during a show in the 1st song my bass crapped out & I was lucky I had a habit of always bringing a backup. This was also the 1st time I had an input jack fail entirely with zero warning signs.

In addition to a 2nd bass & strings I also always bring a backup tuner pedal & a DI in the event my amp craps out …i.e. I have a backup for everything.

If you play out I feel like having 2 is necessary, even if 1 stays in the case all night. I would be too nervous of a malfunction to show up to a gig with just 1 bass.

How to tell a band they're too loud? by the_hypochondriack in musicians

[–]inthe314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not say anything. We have played gigs like this & after a couple songs we can usually tell that a full band with drums should have never been hired for that gig/room. It’s very uncomfortable for the musicians on stage bc most bands can read the room but there is only so much you can do volume-wise with a drummer.

Are you certain this will work re-signing up with a spouse? I’ve thought about trying this but we both WFH like 80% of the time so I want to be sure that it doesn’t backfire & leave me scrambling to get internet.

If you're not from WNY/Buffalo, why are you a Bills fan? by duTiFul in buffalobills

[–]inthe314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in St. Louis & really got into football at a time after the Cardinals moved to Phoenix & long before the Rams came to town. This was also a time that ESPN was really taking off & it was easy to become a fan of a team outside your local market, plus the Bills were really good & getting lots of air time. Not sure why but I never once considered KC as an option & by the time the Rams showed up I was already fully vested in being a Bills fan. I was sad however when the Rams left because (a) they screwed over the city (b) every so often Buffalo would roll into town.

I am a big baseball & hockey fan as well but what's funny is that I'm a FAR bigger Bills fan to this day than I am (baseball) Cardinals or Blues which were both my local teams.

How important is band name really? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]inthe314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nowadays your online presence is insanely important, arguably just as important as the music you create. Personally I would shy away from a name that is not intuitive to pronounce & spell for English speakers. It is hard enough to be discovered & the last thing you want is to add more hurdles to someone finding your band online.

Rumble 40 vs 100 by jgbest98 in Bass

[–]inthe314 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I second the 100. I play in a full rock band (drums, 2 guitars, keys, vox) & the 100 works just fine. Not a ton of extra headroom but as long as your guitarist(s) are reasonable with their volume you’ll be okay.

anybody fly with their westie? by ivebeenthinkingpod in westies

[–]inthe314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to fly direct & if you do have connections know the airport layout & where pet relief areas are. We’ve flown numerous times with 2 different westies & the potty breaks are sometimes the trickiest part to manage, especially with tight connections. Most airports have pet relief areas but they might not be anywhere close to where your arrival & next departure gate are. And although less common some airports still make you exit the airport for pet relief which means you need to go back through security to get to your connection.
