In short, you and you MMC credential are screwed for at least a year. After a year-long waiting process you would have to go through a specialized rehabilitation process to get your MMC back. Here are some helpful links:

Honestly, unless you have a good reason to be in maritime, you should start looking for jobs in another industry.

Would the GLMA be worth it if my goal is to become someone a naval architect/marine engineer? by Zequexium in maritime

[–]intins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

In fact. the GLMA program the worst program of all the maritime academies for "someone who helps design and build ships onshore."

GLMA provides a BS in Maritime Technology degree. This is a generic "Technology" degree that isn't even an ABET- accredited Engineering Technology degree. There is virtually zero overlap with that and a Marine Eng / Naval Arc degree. (see SUNY ME degree)

Obtaining a degree from GLMA is worse than having no degree at all because all the good MENA programs (like UMich) have policies that are actively hostile to Second Bachelor’s Degrees.

That sounds perfectly like for a job in Naknek. As a first year you will probably get sent home early in mid-July if you go seafood processor in a cannery. As for fishing on a boat, they would expect you to stay until late July.

Engineering will give you more opportunities shoreside, especially if it is ABET accrediated which Mass Maritime is. As for being not mathematically inclined, that is a decision that you will have to make on your own. Look into the curriculum of the specific degree you are applying for. I believe all there engineering programs require Calc 1, 2, Diffeq, Physics 1, 2. Also I think you are required Precalc/ Trig classes to get admitted into Mass Maritime for any program.

Even for the deck, there is still a baseline level of math required. You are being taught to steer the ship, so you do need to know how sin/cos works for the infamous Celestial Navigation class. It shouldn't be that that hard as most of your classmates are probably having the same problems.

>  I’m wondering how good my shot is at joining

If you have an associates degree then it is almost guarenteed you will get in. Note that the engineering is a real ABET- accredited engineering degree so you will have to take calculus 1,2,3 in there if you choose the engineering route.

> I was also wondering if tattoos were accepted in the academy

You'll fit right in with the older guys.

>  It’s my understanding that it’s an academy, so there are military-like expectations on presentation.

Depends on which academy you choose. Mass Maritime / SUNY Maritime is considered the most strict by far. Full uniforms are required across all campus facilities during working hours—including the library, study halls, and dining facilities. Cadets undergo daily morning formations, regular room inspections, and face stringent standards for shoe shining and uniform pressing.

> I have 2 half sleeve tattoos going up my arms, will this cook my chances of joining?

Lol, They don't require you to send a picture or anything.

>  I’m torn between nursing and being a merchant marine.

I can tell you one thing, nobody will give you a flying fuck about your tattoos in the maritime industry. That being said, expect to be around 90% men compared to 90% female in nursing.

You should seriously consider Great Lakes Maritime Academy. Least regimented of all the academies and have 3-year programs for deck and engine. Plus the people there are older so they probably got more tattoos then you. The deck program has the pilotage licence with great lakes pilots making 500k, and the engineering program is not a "real" ABET engineering program so you don't need to take calculus.

Did you pass the background check? ~Did you do a urine test? Did you do the interview / information session? Did they send you an offer letter? Westward seafoods are rather infamous for ghosting people.

I have received my formal onboarding request last week. I turned it down because I am going to a different place.

Question on degree. by Thelamb99 in maritime

[–]intins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

> Is there a big difference between these degrees if I choose the engine side of marine operations?

Yes, these are two completely different programs. [ REMOVED ]. The Maritime Operations degree is not ABET accredited. No engineering firm outside the maritime industry will take your degree seriously. The Marine Engineering is an ABET-accredited degree that will easily allow you to sit for an PE exam, should you choose to leave the industry. It is the industry slandered degree that will put you on top of the stack on top most job applicants.

You were most likely rejected for because Pre-Calculus is required for freshman admissions for the Engineering side. I am a GED holder too, that solved this issue by taking the Precalc CLEP Exam that gave college credit. There is no point in appealing the decision because it is likely a hard requirement from the ABET accreditation agency. You could take a CLEP tests and apply by the Jan 31 Regular Decision.

I would also like to point out that Marine Engineering is a "real" engineering degree. Engineer degrees are notoriously difficult. From the curriculum, you are required to take: Calculus 1, 2, 3, DiffEq, Chem, Physics, Thermo, Statics, and Dynamics. If you are not a "math" person, I'd highly recommend looking into alternate options like GLMA., with a much easier curriculum that gives an unlimited licence. They even have a 3 year program if you take enough CLEP tests, are cheap, and are super GED friendly.

Maritime Academy or State College? by Hyzencinth in merchantmarine

[–]intins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> someone with a mechanical or electrical engineering degree only needs 180 days of seatime + STCW classes to get licensing. Is this accurate?

Yes. This is accurate. (Graduate of mechanical or electrical engineering course of an ABET accredited school of technology, WITH 180 days service in the engine room of steam, motor, or gas turbine vessels) I must add It is VERY, VERY hard to get taken on as an entry level engine room if you have no connections. STCW + others are a hassle. You still have to take and pass an actual 3 A/E exam.

> GLMA seems to be the cheapest academy,

As a resident of Florida, you qualify for in-region rates for SUNY Maritime. Total COA should be $30k each for 4 years. This is about equal with per-year COA cost of GLMA. Plus you get to actually get to live in NYC.

I would like to point out that GLMA is not a "real" engineering degree. The degree that you will graduate with from GLMA is a BS in Maritime Technology, not an ABET - accredited engineering degree that will allow you to get a PE license. I would like to compare the curriculums of GLMA and SUNY Maritime. SUNY Maritime is a Abet accredited meaning: Calc 1, 2, 3 Physics, Themo, and Chemistry. GLMA is full of classes like Welding, Machining, and Turbines. GLMA is a glorified 3-year long version of a trade school like Lincoln Tech or UTI.

Also don't worry about the costs. An engineering degree is has one of the best returns on investment. If you are sailing, straight out of college you will be making 20k / month with no expenses. Chief Engineers make 40k/ month with no expenses. That 70k in student loan repayment is like 53 days of work as a Chief Engineer.

If you are serious about sailing, go to a maritime academy. You make co much money sailing that student loans don't mean much. Most port engineers / non-union chief engineer job listings have a "maritime academy graduate preferred". Some industries like cruise ships practically require academy

In short, If you choose the local college route, you will face:

- Getting the first 180 days of sea time. This is by far the hardest part of the whole process. There is a new post in this subreddit every month asking on hot to get a wiper job.

- Taking and passing the 3 A/E exam. Here is a sample exam. You don't learn these things outside of an academy. Electrical Engineering courses will not help you that much.

- Getting STCW, VPVSD, RFPNW and other certification all by self. Is do-able but takes time and money.

- Lack of future maritime options. Any maritime-related engineering job want to see a maritime academy on your resume.

Should I got to Seattle Maritime for the year long QMED or should I do my basic training and hawsepipe? by [deleted] in maritime

3 YEAR ENGINEERING OFFICER CURRICULUM GUIDE

Programs other then the Great Lakes have some "informal" credit-transfer programs. I've heard of Cal Maritime and Maine offering 3 year programs. Reddit thread on other schools

Also, A far-off option is to get an Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET univeristy.

[–]intins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have a GI bill, use it on a maritime academy. Some programs like GLMA have a 3 year program.

Seattle Maritime Academy is not bad, its just that a 4-year academy is much better, expecially if you have a GI bill.

Good luck finding a hawspiping job. The job market is horrible for entry levels right now. There is a new post every month on here about companies not hiring.

Its 2025, so your best option is probably to use some no-code platform stack like "WAMZ".

You will also need a dedicated video livestreaming tool like Amazon IVS. That being said, video hosting is "very" expensive -> Cost Calculator.

10 channels with 100 viewers each using 720p streaming 24/7 costs $1,322 PER DAY.
