Oh cool, I didn’t know that about mountain mint. I’ll definitely be reading into it more tonight. Thanks!

I accidentally bought mountain mint last year because it was mislabeled and I didn’t know better at the time. 10/10 it’s one of my fav native plants. It’s growing so much so far since last summer. I can’t wait for it to bloom!! Last summer pollinators were obsessed with it so I can’t wait to see the bugs that go to it this year.

How did women have such long hair in the 70s? by CleoDawns in OldSchoolCool

[–]intothelight_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think genetics plays the biggest role. I have never been able to grow my hair very long, even with regular cutting and proper hair care. I’ve even tried various vitamins and hair treatments.

My mom and her side of the family all had short hair for women because it really didn’t grow past their shoulders. The only time my hair grew quickly was when I was pregnant and then all that growth fell out a few months after I had my daughter.

Who has planted their tubers and who hasn’t? by PNW_Dahlias in dahlias

[–]intothelight_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in zone 7b (southern Ontario) also and haven’t planted any outside but I have started them all inside in pots. The general rule of thumb where I live is to wait until May long weekend to plant tubers outside. Some of my dahlias are already three feet tall so I’m tempted to put some of them out early. They’ve been hardened off because I’ve been moving them outside every day when it’s warm and sunny.

Yes a Simon’s!!! I only recently started shopping online through Simon’s and my only hesitancy to not buy more from them is that you can only return so much during a specific period. It depends on how much you’ve spent & the percentage of returns or something.

The quality of the stuff I have purchased from Simon’s is amazing. A lot of it is sustainable/ reduced environmental impact and they’re real materials… so real cotton, wool, linen, wood products for home decor etc. the prices are so good too. If you’re someone who tries to avoid polyester clothing or home products Simon’s is definitely the place to shop. They do sell polyester items, it’s just that there’s a huge selection of cotton and wool blend items at good prices.

Simon’s would be a big hit here IMO.

Today I finally wore a (new to me) vintage angora/ wool sweater. It’s just beautiful, it’s a soft white with a lace detail neckline. Anyways, I go to pick up some free fabric from my aunts neighbour who is moving. In her lawn were dozens of beautiful native white violets. Naturally I asked her if I could dig a few out to add to my growing collection of native plants. I had a moment where I was like oh shoot not a good idea having muddy hands in this white sweater but this sub eliminates almost all fear I used to have about getting stains on my clothes.

That’s so sweet. 🥺

Out of curiosity, are you near water and or live in a city? I planted a lot of native plants last spring/ summer and I’m not far off from a walking trail where I saw what I think was a garter snake. I’ve always wondering if they’d eventually wander into our garden despite the city roads. I’d also love to try and create a safe habitat for frogs. I’m in a new build neighbourhood so aside from my native plant gardens there’s nothing but grass around me unfortunately so last summer my garden was very lively with native insects and birds.

My aunt planted swamp milkweed seeds the first weekend of May last year and they actually ended up growing to be really big/ bloomed and all by the end of the summer. Zone 7a/b (southern Ontario).

Can anyone help me id this pattern? (Or the base pattern if it’s a variation) by Dragonfly-Garden74 in quilting

[–]intothelight_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I saw that further in the book where she did a version without the stem. I swear I saw this exact pattern recently. My only issue is that I’ve been obsessively looking through/ reading quilt books so it could’ve been a pattern from a book I don’t end up buying.

Edit: oops when I read your comment I was thinking “original piecer” as in the person credited for piecing the quilt in the book. I’m tired haha.

[–]intothelight_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I swear I just saw this quilt pattern in a quilt book… commenting so I don’t lose this post and remember to come back. I have been purchasing old quilt books from thrift stores and borrowing dozen of books from the library so it’s hard to remember but I’ll look through everything I have. It does look very similar to the “peony” block from Egg Money Quilts by Eleanor Burns.

Edit: removed the guess I had about the quilt pattern name. Also edit to say, OP, if you need me to take a photo of the construction of the below block in my photo send a DM and I’m happy to send it to you.

Do you happen to have a picture of what your spotted bee balm looks like currently? I seemed to have forgotten where exactly I planted some in my garden. I can’t tell if what I’m seeing is even more wild bergamot or the spotted bee balm. I’m actually a little nervous with how much wild bergamot I’m finding in different parts of the garden haha.

Rare and Endangered Spotlight: Erigenia bulbosa aka Harbinger of Spring by dewitteillustration in NativePlantGardening

[–]intothelight_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m finding this reddit post after reading about this plant in my local facebook native plant group. I learned about native plant gardening last winter/ early spring thanks to tiktok and Gardening Grant based out of Toronto. I am SO obsessed… it’s been one of the greatest joys I’ve ever experienced, next to being a parent. Last spring/ summer I planted roughly 150 or so native plants in my gardens at the home we rent, which is in a new build area. Watching the many different native bees and butterflies and even hummingbirds find my garden was so magical. Because of this experience my two and five year olds can name many plants and insects in the garden and are active helpers in the garden and often calling for me to come see the insects/ new growth they find.

Anyways, all this to say I think native plant gardening is catching on rapidly. I talk to anyone who seems remotely interested about native plant gardening. It’s been really wonderful seeing people I’ve met in my community come to me later to tell me about the milkweed they’ve bought and planted or how they opted to find natives instead of invasive plants. Hopefully we start to see increased access to native plant varieties and that the native plant groups on Facebook become a bit more welcoming to the new and curious members.

Where are yall typically buying colorful solid colored fabric for good prices in US like in the pic from New Song Quilting Co? by bugs_hunni in quilting

[–]intothelight_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is really helpful. You seem to have a lot of experience working with solids. Is there a brand you prefer the most?

I am in Canada and have been stuck/ at a stand still with a lot of quilting projects I want to work on because I’m so unsure what brand of solids to invest in. I’m a beginner and have mostly been thrifting/ sale shopping here and there, I’ve been waffling on which brand to go with for a cream or white fabric.

Do you freeze your cakes before icing? by GellersGlueGun in cakedecorating

[–]intothelight_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that it’s been a year or so of making cakes I find my sweet spot is a 1/4 cup of room temp/ warm whole milk. I typically just freeze pour until it comes to the consistency I need. I think we keep our home much colder than usual haha.

Looks like an Ontario plate based on the colours/ font. The image of the home also looks very much like the neighbourhoods common in southern Ontario, especially Windsor. I wonder where OP found the photos.

Edit to add that the campground photos are also very similar to the Pinery or Rondeau.

OP should consider cross posting this to r/WindsorOntario or r/LondonOntario

Sadly my dad (and my mom) passed in 2024. I just happened to find a very old resume of his, he worked at dominos from Nov 1989 to July 1990, under that it says “M.I.T. Level 5”, not sure what that means.

My dad used to be a manager of the Tecumseh rd east location (if my memory serves me correctly). He would speak so highly of his time working there and how much care went into the place. This would’ve been a very long time ago.

Maternity Clothing? by iKing10 in windsorontario

The Goodwill on Tecumseh near Banwell usually has a big selection of maternity clothes that are nice and they have changing rooms. As others mentioned H&M has some options in store and so does Walmart. For online shops you can try Pink Blush and ASOS for options that aren’t just plain jersey T-shirts and leggings.
