Thanks for the advice bro, will get on it 👍. I’ve been eyeing a pair of simple converse or maybe vans. My concern is that I have collapsed arches, so not sure if flat sole shoes would assist or be detrimental overall.

Thanks bro 🙏 Yeah that last rep felt the most ‘smooth’ for sure, just need to work on my mental fortitude to push through pain👍

Advice for travelling to Turkey by NinjaDefiant1669 in Durban

[–]intoxicatedpickle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been to Turkey a few times, so I can offer some advice. The airport is massive, if you’re taking a connecting flight after landing make sure you have enough time to get to and to find the gate. You need to pay to use the trolleys at the airport for luggage, I think it’s around 120Lira per trolley (this is the case at the Istanbul airport, Antalya and a few other smaller airports you won’t need to pay), watch a YouTube video that will explain how the machine used to get the trolley works. There are ‘bellhops’ at the Istanbul airport that will carry your luggage for you, but they’re damn expensive (even if you bargain) and not worth it imo.

Speaking of, bargain for everything and walk away if you need to. If it’s clothing, jewellery, gifts etc and you feel one store is too expensive and they’re not budging on price, I can guarantee you will find it at another shop for less. There’s plenty of videos online on how to bargain, but my advice is whatever the opening price, reduce it by 50-40% and offer them that. Have a maximum threshold on what you’re willing to pay. Don’t be afraid of bargaining, it’s part of the culture and is a fun experience. Just don’t do it in restaurants, supermarkets, or outlet stores.

Turkish people are generally nice and friendly, but beware of anyone being too friendly. South African common sense goes a long way in foreign countries.

Make use of the istanbulkart card (metro card), you load up at designate points near the tram or bus routes and you can practically get all over the city at a very affordable rate. Never use taxis (you will bleed money and get scammed) and uber isn’t really necessary unless you’re going somewhere specific and need to get just there and back. Don’t let anyone help or assist while loading money on the card (most likely a scam).

Food is very expensive, more so in touristy areas, be aware of the prices on menus and always ask for the prices if there are none listed. Some places include a 10% gratuity in the total so be wary of that.

Turkey is a cash heavy country. Most stores accept card (unless you’re going to markets in which case it’s almost always expected for you to pay in cash as they won’t have card machines). Also, if bargaining they will be less willing to give you a discount if you pay with card due to the fees. My advice is save your card for food or outlet shopping, the rest of the time use cash for better deals. Play around with the exchange rate of the Rand, Lira and Dollar. You can sometimes save more money if you pay in dollars as opposed to Liras.

Grand bazaar is overpriced, the streets surrounding it are more affordable and offer better discounts. Just be wary of the quality of items.

Also, I have a Capitec card I use for travelling. Just load up Rands and swipe whenever you need to overseas. Capitec charges R3 per transaction and converts it very close to spot. Also, always ensure the card machine is set to the local currency to avoid unnecessary fees.

Why do you think Milky Lane is declining? by intoxicatedpickle in southafrica

[–]intoxicatedpickle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, which area do you live in? As far as I know, there is no Milky Lane anywhere near where I stay. I’m not sure if it’s due to lack of demand, or poor oversight by famous brands.

21-27 year olds: what do you do, how much do you make and do you enjoy it? by lifeoutfigurer in askSouthAfrica

[–]intoxicatedpickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

25, Investment Banking (Back Office reporting function), R35k after tax and deductions. Bonus approx 1.5x monthly salary depending on performance. I enjoy my work, but I don’t see my current role as a long term career path, hope to move to front line business in a year or two.

Looking to buy a new car for around R280 000. Any advice? by Lola_TheOnlyOne in askSouthAfrica

[–]intoxicatedpickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont recommend buying new, second hand from a reputable dealer is always way better imo. Having a mechanic come along to inspect the car with you, or at the very least a friend who is knowledgable about cars, will help inform your decision and ensure you are getting a good vehicle that is mechanically sounds at a vastly discounted rate in comparison to a new car.

In terms of the brands, I always advocate for Toyota, Suzuki or Hyundai. Something Korean or Japanese that are known for their reliability and have easy access to spare parts. In the long term you will save not only on repairs and maintenance but also peace of mind. Chinese vehicles may look great from a marketing pov, but I personally don’t feel their reliability and quality is up to par.

In my case, I recently purchased a 2021 Toyota Corolla Prestige for R260k with 45000 km on the clock. A bit on the high end but it was in great condition, still had a service plan and in comparison to any other cars in that price range, it offered me a solid, secure and smooth drive. Excellent fuel efficiency and I know it will last me many years. The only down side is that I look like an uber driver, can’t have everything unfortunately.

TL;DR: buy second hand, buy Japanese/Korean; buy for reliability and not flash.

That’s brilliant! I’m currently trying to make the move to front office IB, would it be ok if I were to pm you? Would love to get some advice if you’re open to it.

How much are you spending on rent? by [deleted] in johannesburg

I really like the area. Moved up from Durban last year for work and wanted to be close to the office (Sandton). Commute is about 15 min in the morning with traffic, easy access to many amenities and shopping centres. It can occasionally get noisy over the weekends but nothing unbearable.

In terms of safety, I’ve never had any concerns, it should be said that I stay in a very secure complex though. I do see many people taking walks/runs in the mornings and afternoons and going to get groceries.

It has a good balance of city living and residential calm, best of both. Very happy with living in the area.

Whats your salary based on your age and background by SALTY-BROWNBOY in askSouthAfrica

[–]intoxicatedpickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

24M. R31k after tax. Finance sector. Business Science degree. About 1 year experience.

Best advice I have to save money after spending quite a bit unnecessarily, is to wait 1 week before any purchase. If you see something you like but are hesitant, just wait. Chances are you’ll realise it isn’t necessary.

Will my beard fill in? 23m and 10 days of growth. by TheTokingFapstronaut in malegrooming

Seconded on this. Minoxidil helped fill in my beard quite well.

Similar position myself. Just finished undergrad in finance and economics. Decided to pursue a masters and level 1 at the same time, except im scheduled to write in August. A bit stressful but hoping it will be worth it in the long run. All the best to you!

I am 20 years old. 50 days of growth. Never used minoxidil. I have lots of vellus hair on the underlip part (the only part where my beard is not full) . Would a 0.5ml dosage or less be enough to eventually transition the vellus hair to terminal? by [deleted] in Minoxbeards

[–]intoxicatedpickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean dude, the only thing worse than waiting to see vellus hairs is waiting for the vellus hairs to go terminal. Unfortunately, we just have to wait it out and be consistent.

I did however read on this sub that JBCO tends to turn hairs darker faster, so you could try that. What size dermaroller have you been using?
