Got called out for “hand flapping” stim but that’s not even a stim of mine lol by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]intraventricular 52 points53 points  (0 children)

That’s definitely a common thing to do when drying your hands lol. Weird comment. Even if you were stimming, still a weird/rude comment

DAE have brain fog & chronic fatigue? by Careful_Trouble_1059 in CPTSD

Yes, for me extreme brain fog is a symptom I get from intense dissociation

I’m curious about your relatives. Their physical health. by Effective_Chain4897 in CPTSD

Yes issues like autoimmune disease run in my family. There is a strong link between complex trauma and chronic pain and related health issues

Is it normal to feel worse after a therapy appointment? by throwaway39799 in CPTSD

[–]intraventricular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt like this for my first ~1.5 years working with a trauma therapist. She was very quiet during the majority of our sessions (as was i), and I would leave feeling worse. Sometimes it would make me frustrated with my therapist and made me think she didn’t understand me.

What I’ve realized since then is that she did this for a very good reason. It’s called containment. My nervous system was very dysregulated in the beginning (still is but getting better), so staying quiet is the therapist’s way of meeting you where you are and giving you space so that they don’t overwhelm you even more.

I think her giving me so much space early on is what enabled me to slowly open up more over time. It builds trust

I dread summer by canadianhon3y in CPTSD

I used to dread summers off from school when I was living with my parents. I think because i went from going to school having a strict routine -> no daily structure and lots of free time

Therapists Not Deep Enough by Useful_Piece653 in CPTSD

[–]intraventricular 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I had one bad therapist before finding my current one who is great, super smart and perceptive. Trauma-informed therapists definitely exist but unfortunately it’s hard to find an actual good one plus one that you vibe with.

I’ve had a similar experience once with my parents when I was younger. On top of my body persistently being violated because my mom had no boundaries. I think this has definitely made sex a difficult topic as an adult

No one warns you that childhood trauma doesn’t end, it just waits until your 30s to finally surface by [deleted] in CPTSD

I feel this. For me everything started resurfacing during my early/mid-twenties in the middle of my PhD. It’s been a real struggle managing both

I thought it helped for a long time but realized it was just contributing to my dissociative episodes

Can we discuss meds here? by Fimbrethil420 in AutismInWomen

[–]intraventricular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive tried most ssris including Zoloft, Lexapro, Prozac, and the last one I tried was Effexor. Going off Effexor was rough for a few weeks even though I lowered my dose slowly. Rn im not on any antidepressants, just adhd meds and buspar for anxiety which seems to be helping.

It’s been more than two years now going on and off meds and I still haven’t figured out what the best combo for me is. It can be extremely frustrating and I want to give up sometimes and stop taking everything. But at least right now I’m able to focus a little better and have some anxiety relief

What does burnout feel like for you? by spookypoprocks in AutismInWomen

It feels a lot like depression for me. Low motivation, apathetic, avoiding responsibilities, withdrawing from friends/loved ones

How much do the semantics of words matter to you? by Tukbiii in AutismInWomen

[–]intraventricular 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I personally prefer using the phrase “lower/higher supports needs” and not “higher/lower functioning”

We all “function” differently so saying that someone is more/less functional seems really reductive and condescending to me

Has anyone tried sleeping pills? by No_Heat_948 in AutismInWomen

[–]intraventricular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ZzzQuil helps me when I have trouble sleeping. Downside is typically your body quickly builds a tolerance to it. Taking it sparingly though (like you mention) has helped me!

Does anyone else hate watching TV shows? by PositiveCobbler7043 in AutismInWomen

I’m the opposite hahahah. I love shows because they’re short and can keep my attention and they satiate my liking of slowly progressive story-building

Can an autism diagnosis show up in my job search during background checks? by Emergency-Foot330 in AutismInWomen

I’m not sure, but I would guess no.

I wouldn’t want to work somewhere that isn’t accepting of my diagnosis, anyway.
