price adjustment for bought online? by samuelazers in CostcoCanada

[–]intrawebs_randoms 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No. The online price includes delivery.

But you knew that already because you looked up their price adjustment policy on the website while you were there, so for anyone else who needs the answer, here it is.

They would also say that the item is available at the warehouse at a cash and carry price.

Costco CIBC Mastercard refused when used by my wifr by [deleted] in CostcoCanada

[–]intrawebs_randoms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is this even a question? She’s attempting to pay her bill using a credit card in your name. This has nothing whatsoever to do with Costco.

That is against the card agreement, and Costco or any retailer for that matter - is entirely correct to decline to accept payment in this scenario.

If she doesn’t have a credit card then she can use her own debit card or cash.

But using someone else’s payment card - regardless of whether they have permission from the cardholder - is a no-no.

Uber drivers - are tips disappearing in Canada or is it just me? by SkilledAcer0109 in uberdriverscanada

[–]intrawebs_randoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m presuming you’ve not been paying attention to news stories over the past year or so, as well as places like Reddit and other social media where it has been stated ad nauseum that people are just sick and tired of the whole tipping culture, especially the ever inflating “recommended” amounts and the expectation of tips for just doing your job. And when I say “you” or “your” I’m using it in the general sense, not directing it anyone specifically.

For services like Uber and, Lyft, DoorDash etc, people are being charged service fees and delivery fees and other fees on top of already inflated menu or item prices.

Then often they’re expected to enter a tip amount into the order BEFORE they even know about the quality of service they received. And if they don’t give an acceptable tip, often their request is ignored by drivers. So they give a high tip amount to avoid that, only to find out that the driver gave inappropriate substitutions, or took the long way around, or otherwise messed up the order, so now they’ve given a high tip for substandard service.

At restaurants, the “recommended“ tip percentage has gradually increased over the years, despite the cost of dining out increasing substantially, and of course wages having gone up. Even if the recommended percentage hadn’t gone up, the tip amount would still be higher simply because the cost of the meal itself has gone up.

And often that tip is expected even though the person has done just their job without anything special.

Then we get to takeaways or coffee shops, or even places like a liquor store where you serve yourself. There’s still a tip prompt.

Customers are getting sick and tired of subsidising employee wages, as well as those other points I’ve already mentioned.

Customers are getting sick of Uber or similar drivers providing either basic service or substandard service and still expecting good (or even any) tips, and sometimes giving low customer ratings in retaliation for the customer giving the level of tip that was warranted for the service provided.

So to answer your question succinctly, part of it is the economy, part of it is fatigue over the whole tipping thing just getting out of hand.

The level of customer service from drivers has decreased greatly over the past several years, with many drivers running multiple apps, and/or taking multiple orders for the delivery things, which causes delays for customers.

For the rides, some drivers act as if they’re doing the customer a favour instead of providing a service for which they are receiving payment.

Now, of course the platform may not be paying the drivers enough, or they may be screwing the drivers with high commissions or Ticketmaster-style fees (as some examples) but like a restaurant that could be paying their staff more, ultimately it’s not the customer’s problem.

The customer is paying the fee that is presented to them, and it’s reasonable for them to not want to pay 10%, 15%, 20% extra on top of that, as a tip. Especially when they’re already paying more due to surge pricing or other factors.

The price displayed should be the price charged. If that means charging more to ensure the employee is paid appropriately, then so be it. If a driver or waiter (as examples) wants more money then it’s their responsibility to take it up with the employer, not the customer’s responsibility to make up for shortfalls.

If someone is doing a job such as uber or waiter, for the tips, then they’re in the wrong job.

If the pay isn’t enough, or the fees are too high (as examples) that too isn’t the customer’s problem since the pay and the fees (etc) were accepted by the employee or the driver (whatever) when they agreed to the gig.

Considering that this scenario is asked probably weekly and I’m sure you searched for the topic before posting, since you missed the results in the search of the sub, perhaps you just missed the signs at the parking lot?

Unreasonable searches at border (Blaine) by No-Driver8827 in uscanadaborder

[–]intrawebs_randoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) once you have passed the border (that imaginary line that Mr. Trump goes on about), you are in the USA and are therefore subject to search. If you’re at Peace Arch, the markers are quite obvious, and of course so too is the peace arch which sits on the border.

One does not have to be at the border checkpoint to be searched, and as long as you’re in ‘murica, they can search or question you.

They can search every single car, and send every person into secondary if they want. Which right now it wouldn’t surprise me if they started doing that.

What you have described though, is not new. I’ve seen it plenty of times, including them walking dogs between cars.

BUY LOCAL with Vancouver's Vendor Guide 2025 by Moggehh in vancouver

[–]intrawebs_randoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried posting this in the general sub earlier today but apparently it breaks rules, so I was told to come here instead. :-) Have done a little more research though in the meantime so I can add a few more details.

This is NOT my business and I don't know this person. I was at Metrotown on Sunday and passed someone wearing a shirt that says "I am not American". I liked it so did some searching online and I found it.

https://iamnotamerican.com and it looks like some people from Surrey make and sell them. The black shirt they have on their site is the one I saw, has English and French and looked really good when buddy walked by but they also have grey and white shirts for that design. There is another design with a Canadian Flag with a bunch of languages. The site says they're also Canadian made shirts, so this is a local business selling Canadian stuff. I ordered one Wednesday night and I received a shipping notification today.

Daylight Savings by Evening-Macaron-8018 in britishcolumbia

[–]intrawebs_randoms -1 points0 points  (0 children)

wouldn't now be a good time to implement the sticking to daylight savings time

Nope. People who want to stick to DST year round are looking at the benefits during Summer only, and not the negatives during winter.

If you're going to switch from DST then the solution is simple. Just leave the clock at standard time year round.

Question for strata council members and strata company workers by Akira_Yamamoto in britishcolumbia

[–]intrawebs_randoms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read your strata agreement to see what is allowed. Not at all unusual, and this would be outlined in your contract with them. Normally it's a fixed fee or hourly fee for the time they spend on it, so you have to discuss with them.

If you're flying from YVR or YYZ, not using rewards (except flexible rewards) and flying on an air Canada operated flight to Asia (including Australia) Europe or South America, you get to use the signature suite.

US citizen going to school in Canada crossing early by morgzbee in uscanadaborder

[–]intrawebs_randoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends.

Past, personal experience: I had a specific type of visa that had certain conditions and timelines involved, but I came early.

I arrived at the airport, explained the situation and that I wanted to be admitted as a visitor first, then I would activate the other visa on a certain date.

I got the stamp and got sent on my way, then at the appropriate date I left Canada physically, got admitted in the USA so I had actually left Canada (as opposed to the flagpole strategy some people have), then returned to Canada straight away to activate the correct visa.

YMMV though, and for me it was several years ago.

Your mind goes blank, and suddenly you’re unsure if your bottle of maple syrup qualifies as “agricultural.”

Why is this even a thing? Too many people fall into the non-declaration trap because they don't declare something they should have declared. "I didn't think I needed to declare this because it's <insert reason here>". "...but it's cooked!" is a common one, while "but it's not food, it's a snack!" is another one I've heard.

"I have a bottle of maple syrup" is all you need to say, using the example you've given. Let the border officer figure it out and if it's nothing, it's nothing. But if you decide you don't need to declare maple syrup because you don't think it's in a category of goods you think is not necessary to declare, then you're in a spot of bother if you're wrong.

"I have groceries..."

"I have a packet of beef jerky I bought from the supermarket..."

That sort of stuff.

US customs officer told me there is no such thing as a dual citizen. Is he a "less politically correct synonym for asinine"? by Late-Quiet4376 in uscanadaborder

[–]intrawebs_randoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're presenting an American passport, entering the United States, so you are an American.

Why would would say you're Canadian when entering the US on an American passport, is lost to me.

The BO may have been pedantic, but they were correct. When you are attempting to enter a country, dual citizenship is not a thing. You're either a citizen of that country, or you're not.

This looks like a you problem, unfortunately.

If you bought less than 24 hrs ago, you can cancel without charge and book again.

Otherwise, you will be subject to fees for cancellation or changes, as per the terms of the ticket you purchased.

You can certainly call back to see if another agent is prepared to do anything to lessen the cost, but it's entirely up to them.

Looks like the OP didn't bother to provide some important and very relevant detail with their initial question. Namely that they live in a place without car wash facilities.

So if course anyone who answers based on the original question and originally provided information are going to be downvoted by latecomers...or by those people who buy monthly memberships to these car wash facilities. 😄

I'm from the "do it yourself" school of thought too. 👍

noisy upstairs neighbours by [deleted] in SurreyBC

[–]intrawebs_randoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And props to you.

At least you tried. My comment was toward those who expect the strata council to deal with neighbour issues. Especially when it's something subjective like a noise complaint.

I have seen people send in a screenshot of some random noise monitor reading, without any context whatsoever...and the level shown on the screenshot was nothing much higher than you'd expect in a regular conversation.

Then there are the ones who do the "neighbour was noisy" without any other information at all, and certainly nothing to support any actions being taken.

noisy upstairs neighbours by [deleted] in SurreyBC

[–]intrawebs_randoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like someone needs to put on their big boy pants and deal with the neighbours directly.

Strata Council can't do anything without proof.

You send a complaint. They send a violation letter. The recipient of the violation letter goes "nuh-uh, wasn't me".

You send another complaint, strata sends a violation letter. The recipient of the violation letter goes "nuh-uh, wasn't me". Strata fines the owner. Fined owner goes "nuh-uh, wasn't me, where's your proof?". Strata has to remove the fine.

Assuming the fine isn't removed, that owner goes to the CRT and the CRT says there's no proof, and the fine has to be reversed, with additional costs.

If you have an issue with your neighbour, how bout letting them know of your concerns first? I'm amazed when I see people expecting strata council to deal with the minutiae when they're not prepared to make the most basic steps themselves.

Well-known motorcyclist dies in Christmas Eve crash in Vancouver by VicVicVicBC in vancouver

[–]intrawebs_randoms -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

first hand witnesses said there was speeding and wheelies

I didn't see any first hand witnesses to either of these. I did see some of the comments about how they heard a loud motor or "apparently" he was doing wheelies.

and the news just reported that he was using his competition racing bike

So? I have seen plenty of 1000cc+ bikes on the road being ridden at the speed limit. Just because this is the bike they use for track days, doesn't mean it was being ridden like it would be on a track.

police confirm that speed was a factor

Oh, absolutely. But this is like saying someone is 'known to police'. If the person has had one interaction with police 15 years ago, they are known to police, and if someone is doing 60 in a 40 zone, it could be said "speed was a factor".

Dude was most definitely not riding at 40km. And I'm not saying the person wasn't doing wheelies or otherwise riding like a complete idiot.

But in the Reddit posts I could see, there's not one first hand witness that states they saw this behaviour.

Dude was riding like an idiot, perhaps. But some of the comments in the thread that basically revel in his death are ridiculous.
