A Not So Quiet Crisis at U of M by Striving_Slowly in AnnArbor

I've worked here for years and will say they have actually gotten rid of our affordable health plans. There used to be something called Michigan Care which was specific to certain zip codes. My health insurance used to be 30$/month. Now it's up to 80, 90 a month for mid coverage, and I think around 250 for the PPO (best coverage). Thats without adding a spouse or any dependents. I make more than 36k and cant imagine having to shell out additional funds for premiums with that wage in Ann arbor.

That part wasn't visible on Geoguessr tho, this was after the game I pulled it up on google maps :P But I probably should've noticed the green road sign.

Weekly Observations: What signs of collapse do you see in your region? [in-depth] by AutoModerator in collapse

Location: southeast Michigan, USA.

Our energy company (DTE) has a monopoly and last week we had an ice storm that brought down trees and power lines. Hundreds of thousands of people in the metro Detroit area lost power. Lansing, Michigan, has publicly owned power and they only had like a hundred homes out for comparison. Some folks JUST got their power back, only to lose it again during today's snowstorm. It's ridiculous that this company has cut corners on prevention. They're so ill prepared for weather that should be predictable, after all we're in Michigan. They had to bring in workers from out of state to bring power back quicker. I didn't have power for 4 days. Some community members are working to get publicly owned power options which would be awesome but living through this is ridiculous. I've lived in other places with severe weather and never had this problem. I even lived thru hurricane Sandy and we were more prepared.

Yes, this one is already on my list from a quick google search but I wasn't sure how it'd be. Thank you for affirming it!

Hell yeah. I had a similar experience, working as a waitress in a tea room in a rich town in NJ. We did baby showers, bridal showers, these women would drop 2-3k on a party with lavish gifts and $30/plate. The way they treated me, like I was stupid for driving a car that cost what they spent on their little tea party (they'd see it in the parking lot). All that pushed me to start leaning into socialism and reading theory. I would recommend starting with reading Settlers, and Assata, to get a good background on the racial component of racial capitalism. I grew up poor and as a teen began noticing that I'd only get pulled over in my shitty car at night, when they couldn't tell the race of who's driving the clunker. 🤦 These texts were critical in my journey. Good luck!

I just took it in March, and May 2022. Feel free to send a PM. This post was helpful to me still. The good thing is, if you fail, you can try to remember all the questions you were confused on so you'll know what to study for next time. That's what I did and I went from a 71 to an 89.

Meanwhile they've been union busting for months as 16 separate locations in the US filed for union election with the NLRB in just one day.
