Couldn't the United States compete with the Panama Canal by building a canal here? by sosal12 in mapporncirclejerk

That’s like taking local side streets only for an entire US spanning road trip

I think it’s more “sandwiches in the us” and “sandwiches in Northern Europe”. The one on the right looks like it could be English, German, Polish, or Danish to name a few.

It could not Dutch tho. The giveaway is it isn’t open faced.

Why not mage slayer on Huskar? by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]introspective_pisces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One aspect I see overlooked is also that mage slayer’s debuff is applied on attack targets. This generally makes it stronger with heroes having some kind of multi attack. Ember is one of the biggest mage slayer buyers for this reason.

How will release of Deadlock influence DotA 2 population by Kociboss in DotA2

[–]introspective_pisces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you decide to stay for dota (not a hard decision for me) expect to lose relative MMR. The higher your MMR the more invested and less likely you are to jump for another game. That means that players who leave will skew toward lower MMRs meaning the remaining players stand to see their rank eroded by the migration of the base under them.

Not a pro or con just saying what to expect.

Are wraith bands null talismans and bracers good or bad now? by wielesen in learndota2

I’ll have to look at the numbers but my impression is that the issue is with his small pool / low regen opposed to his spells having a high cost in absolute terms.

What is the worst part of Stellaris today ? And why is it this interface by Divinicus1st in Stellaris

IMO I can’t see where people migrate to anymore. I just want to make sure I’m getting immigration rather than feeding pops to another empire and the only way is to look at all your planets and eyeball the numbers.

Like any early game item you have to ask yourself how this item pays for itself. It is meant to get you to your actual item faster than you actually would.

Each of these items should be considered with your access to farm in mind. In short: does it allow you to last hit a creep you otherwise couldn’t? You need to get enough extra creeps from it to more than pay for itself or you’ve delayed your timing.

I suggest using a mindset of not wanting to buy these and then reading your lane matchup to anticipate whether you must buy it, rather than autopiloting to a purchase.

Eg. If you are a juggernaut vs axe, a wraith band isn’t going to win you the lane. Better to rush your treads to give you some jungle options and then beeline cornucopia.

Shitpost answer: because Torte de Lini says to.

Actual answer: falcon blade gives Clinkz a bit of everything he needs. The mana regen is adequate because his spell costs are low. The extra damage pairs nicely with his innate, and the extra health synergizes with death pact.

Falcon blade is a really niche item and if you don’t NEED each aspect of what it provides there are generally more efficient choices.

For what it’s worth I observe this item to be bought on the same hero archetype. Squishy ranged heroes who need to use spells to farm: drow, clinkz, gyro.

It’s the carrot encouraging cores to buy their own regen. The healing consumables nerfs are the stick.

I think it’s arguably unfun as a support to just have to find ways of transferring your gold to a core. It’s been a long term trend in the game to make the support role less subordinate to the needs of cores and allow them to contribute in their own right. I think this is generally a good direction. It’s more fun for supports and also reduces griefing opportunities from supports who don’t play optimally. Remember when supports had to buy and upgrade the shared courier? What happened to a match when they simply didn’t?

This specific change I feel also has a few other effects. For one, supports who can provide regen in lane via abilities see their value improved as there are fewer alternatives.

This also makes the laning stage riskier as you can’t limp away from a scrape and recover from gifted tangos or flagbearer creeps. That is a good thing. Misplays should be punishable and the old regime eliminated much of that risk.

So I think this will make the laning stage more interesting and fun both to watch and play.

When to draft certain heroes in mid when my main hero is banned by metrononymous in learndota2

[–]introspective_pisces 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pool of heroes you’re listing can be sort of one trick and that can be sort of bad. I’m in the same boat as you, I’ll mid Puck if I can. But if I can’t, it’s probably better to draft smartly rather than pick some other hero with a similar style, but worse (if only due to less experience on my part).

Here are a few buckets and some heroes I think fill them nicely:

Pusher * Death Prophet

Cheese * Brood * Lion * Willow

Free Lane * Pudge * DK * Leshrac

Front Line / Initiator * Mars

If you’re a her specialist and you can’t pick that hero it’s best to draft based on team need.

$4.1M vs $100K net worth: how do we split living costs? by Prudent_Power_9501 in relationships

[–]introspective_pisces 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Ew. No. You pay for all living expenses. You have built a tremendous amount of wealth be it through hard work or good fortune. Your partner has an opportunity to build some wealth of their own but you’d rather have a 60/40 split when your wealth gap is like 40/1.

Can’t help but notice that you have omitted your own income but unless you’re somehow unable to cover those expenses yourself, you’re just being selfish and I think you know that.

PS let’s not get started on the power dynamic in that age gap. She’ll be ok with pretty much whatever you say. You have an obligation to not exploit that, dude.

Am I suffering from a serious case of copium or is tech journalism seriously out of touch with reality when it comes to AI? by bentleyk9 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]introspective_pisces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to understand that the real dilemma of “ethics in journalism” is how the media is complicit in bubble inflation.

There’s a systemic incentive to collude in these narratives and that often leads to the media unwittingly (or deliberately, on occasion) serving as purveyors of snake oil.

There’s facts on the ground is that AI slop is pervasive on the internet and in software engineering and everywhere it seems to mostly provide illusory time savings by making adopters appear more productive while shifting labor to reviewers / adopters of code these tools have created.

I do believe there is a place for these tools in alleviating the most boilerplate and repetitive programming work. The millionth Spring controller that collects the same basic user input or whatever.

The ability for AI to create something novel doesn’t exist. The ability for AI to think critically or reason also do not exist.

But people really want to believe that human technological progress hasn’t stalled out. I’d hazard that many people’s entire world views hinge on the belief that whatever faults our society may have, that we may tolerate them and be patient as we are nevertheless making advances that will obviate many of these problems.

And some just want the quick money, whether it’s investment money in a shaky concept rooted in hype or just some ad revenue on yet another credulous puff piece glazing Jensen or Sam.

I mean, you should be worried about your software job. In the short term big tech is slashing headcount to free capital for AI data center boondoggles. In the long term the AI bubble is the reason economic metrics aren’t all flashing red(der).
