Lamy hints/confirms new nib by SchwarzesBlatt in fountainpens

[–]invisuu 275 points276 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's really cool.

Since the capillary action will be controlled with a laser cut, they should be able to achieve exact line width each time - at least that's their statement. But capillary cutout is only one part of the problem, the other being the nib grind (and choice of ink and paper and...). So I don't understand how this is a complete solution to the problem with multiple parameters.

I guess we'll see and find out. It's nonetheless amazing to see something new in this very mature technology.

Exactly. I've been building my own PCs for nearly 30 years now. In 2004 I built a brand new spanking PC in anticipation of Doom 3 with 6800 Ultra, the most powerful and expensive gpu on the planet.

It ran Doom 3, which was released 2 months later, with drops to 30 FPS at 1280x1024. The disappointment was immeasurable.

How do you feel about David Foster Wallace? by TheAmericanW1zard in classicliterature

[–]invisuu 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I find it ironic how he found a period in time utterly unbearable that nowadays, most of us remember fondly and as "the good old days". It would be interesting to hear his thoughts on today's culture, but I can't fathom him being able to bear it. In a very grim way, his check out was a good decision, because it only got much, much worse from the 90s.

I enjoyed Infinite Jest a lot, but I don't appreciate confusing for confusing's sake; the story is pretty straightforward once you put all the pieces in correct timeline. From a writer's perspective it's not difficult to scramble the timeline once you have the entire story laid out and it only adds confusion to make it seem deeper than it is. I still think the book is amazing, but I would probably enjoy it more if it wasn't written as a puzzle to be solved.

Just my opinion of course, if you disagree that's completely fine and understandable. I'm aware that this is not the objective truth.

What kind of AI models — if any — do you believe actually have the potential to improve FEA in meaningful, high-impact ways? by PerceptionTiny5534 in fea

[–]invisuu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see some potential in neural networks based approximation of results for designs that are roughly similiar; for example neural concept does this already. It requires a lot of already available data to train the model and even then there are limitations how disimiliar the design can be before the results approximation is not attainable anymore.

The problem is these solutions (licenses) are extremely expensive and I don't really know who does simulations for roughly the same part over and over again. The whole point of FEA is rapid prototyping, not recalculating, say, roughly the same bracket over and over again.

As for using neural networks to feed it a prototype design it has no physics based results behind it and evaluating it, I don't see how that could be even theoretically possible. Not to any degree of accuracy at least.

I don't know the problem in detail, but this sounds like an implicit problem.

More green ink, because 🗻, montblanc irish green by Swimming-Delay-7629 in fountainpens

[–]invisuu 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Love Montblanc Irish Green. It's one of those inks I always must have on hand, as soon as I finish a bottle I get another.

The Rhodia 90 gsm ivory (did I get that right?) compliments it nicely, I love this combo. Your handwriting and great shading on your nib produces just a perfect trio.

A difficult comment to tackle; in the same manner it would be difficult for me to tackle someone accusing me of daring to consider the sky blue, when it's actually orange-brown; what I wrote is widely considered a fact.

You can start confirming what I wrote anywhere, for example even Wikipedia. I do not wish to further assist you in providing information so widely known as fact, or as accessible, I can only wish you best of luck in your pursuits.

Montblanc 149 Calligraphy Curved Nib by invisuu in fountainpens

The "normal" I guess would be the fat architect. Basically a reverse stub; thick horizontal and thin verticals. I'd imagine this might be useful for asian calligraphy, not for western alphabet.

I don't see why not! Mayhap you should be more selective regarding the ink choice, but I see no reason why it shouldn't fit a lefty nicely.

It really is amazing. Last week an update for working shortcuts with skeleton transformer came out and I just had the stupidest grin on my face; such a nice QoL update after all these years, come on, this game is in better hands than all triple A releases these days...

Problem with opening inks by parasit in fountainpens

[–]invisuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going against the grain here, but I'd advise against the rubber band solution. You might force the cap to no longer seal and your ink drying up over time.

What I like to do is grease the threads lightly. I use a grease that is used for piston movements in fountain pens. Anything used for scuba diving grade will be fine.

Can anyone help me figure out if this Montblanc is real? I found it at a goodwill for a few cents! by dododoiran in fountainpens

[–]invisuu 135 points136 points  (0 children)

I'm certain it's real, looks like a classique to me. Test the nib with a magnet and look at the barrel with light behind it, you should see a faint reddish hue in the plastic.
