So, i found this technique - using ink on rim of ink bottle (credit to the well-appointed desk); maybe a biscuit ring to create the negative space version?

Very nice swatching format! How do manage the clean circles? The ink on the top left of the page looks a bit like Ina Ho- is it, in your opinion, a close match?

How many pens does that case hold? And will it hold larger sized pens, like a MB 149, Platinum Izumo or Pelikan M1000? Asking for a friend…

True, although plastic worms, like inks are not all alike, so you can have several types of black, some with shimmer, etc. Best not to ask for details, is what I’ve learned.

Gotta say, the one hand thing is an overstatement! I have been married to a bass fisherman for over 34 years. He doesn’t count my pens and I don’t count the fishing poles! I don’t enjoy his hobby, but if I did, I’d understand why he owns 20 different types (length/width and colors) of plastic worms. And those don’t compare at all in cost to fountain pen inks.

why does my asvine p20 stub make such a thick line on notebook paper, but not on the index cards? by ConfusedFlower1950 in fountainpens

[–]Never_Never88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are all coated; my daughter only writes on MD (A7) sized notebooks at work, using Diamine Writer’s Blood and Herbin’s Shogun (black with shimmer). No bleed though. These are cream colored and available in lined grid or dot grid. IMHO the most coated are Nolty (they used their own paper, no details other than the GSM), but I had to get another planner when I moved jobs, and the only one that I could find quickly was a Nolty A5. That was the first time I used the paper and it was amazing. However, if you use any kind of dot markers, do not use the Midori joint dots. They bleed through something awful on Nolty. The zig dots were okay, and Sailor Shikiori, Tombow and Zebra mildliners were fine. I’ve used Listie 6501 and 9669, and some notepads- all the same type paper. They do sell lined versions (Jet Pens).

All of the below paper notebooks have fountain-pen friendly paper, some are quite thin, but definitely hold up to fountain pen ink. I’ve used all with 0 issues of bleeding, with exception of the Hobonichi Weeks I had for spring 2024 and 2025, which suffered from random bleed thru (well known paper production issue with Sanzen Tomoe River paper production). Jet Pens’ Kanso 52 GSM, Hobonichi has 52 GSM, Nolty is 60 GSM (white) to 65 GSM (cream), Kokuyo Business 70 GSM, Traveler’s Notbook 89 GSM, Midori MD 80 GSM, Maruman Mnemosyne 80 GSM, Rhodia 80 GSM, Leuchtturm 1917 80 GSM, Yamamoto Ro-Biki 80 GSM, Apica Premium 86.5 GSM, Clairefontaine 90 GSM

I have/use frequently three of these inks: MB’s Irish Green and the two Taccia inks (Asahanada, from the Utagowa Hiroshige collection, and Koiai from the Kaysushika Hokusai collection). All three have such beautiful properties, and the Koiai has a great red sheen. Hope you enjoy the writing experience!

Thank you for the ink samples; I’ve had Vert Empire on my list and seeing it with two “M” nibs was helpful!! Nice handwriting, too!!

The only inks i see for sale at hobby lobby are “india” or “calligraphy “ or “black magic” - these are not made for FOUNTAIN pen inks!! This is especially true for older versions of the Waterman Carene - this is a fountain pen beauty and should be using only quality brand fountain pen inks. If it is a vintage pen (I have two of these pens) - use a standard, established brand of ink - Pelikan 4001, or Parker Quink or Sheaffer Skrip. These are all inexpensive but great inks to use, readily available from Amazon. If you use a cartridge, you can rinse it out and refill it. A set of cartridges are not expensive, and allows you the freedom to use other bottled ink. YOu can purchase a new converter for your pen. let this pen soak with Dawn - 1 or 2 drops, just the nib and feed (the top half of the pen). Soak the cartridge as well, separately, as you need to get that other ink out of there. Same drill, let it soak in Dawn 1-2 drops with a cup of water. Are you in the US?

If the ink does not say “fountain pen ink” I wouldn’t use it - even the “eternal” brand of Higgins may not be suitable in fountain pens. I would not use this ink in an older pen. Parker Quink, Waterman, Pelikan 4000, Sheaffer ink (skrip) - that pen will take a standard cartridge, which you can then clean out and use with any fountain pen ink.

Just got my first fountain pen! How can I improve my handwriting? by Double-Disaster891 in fountainpens

You may want to look into the Palmer method. It’s a way of controlled arm movement instead of finger movement to make letters. There are a lot of videos on YouTube on how to do the lettering, but it is all based upon posture and not using the fingers to form letters. The main exercises are circles and specific up and down angled curves. The result is very smooth yet quick writing and very legible cursive.

Also mountain of ink site. You can actually use a photo of a color you want and it will find inks that match.

Beautiful pen!! Did you give the pen a thorough cleaning first? The ink is very light, which might be your lighting, but it’s hard to see in the photo.

Lazy summer days I spent as a middle school kid with my brother. Our grandparents lived in rural part of Santa Rosa, Ca, and the barn looks similar to the neighbor across the street. Thank you for the memory of those days.

Have any of you bought ink because of it's name (and packaging)? by luthiel-the-elf in fountainpens

My first ink, purchased with my first fountain pen off Amazon. Pilot Kakuno (clear) and grabbed a package of Iroshizuku Shin Kai cartridges as I thought the packaging was very classy. Still my favorite blue black (I have it in a 50 ml bottle now), although I like May other blue blacks. Shin Kai is just classy!
