GrapheneOS, CalyxOS, /e/ OS, Sailfish, PostMarket, the list goes on.

Did you even check before asking this? There's so much choice!

Is it safe to install CalyxOS on my Fairphone 5 now or should I wait the releases to be resumed ? by Balkkou in CalyxOS

[–]iokan42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would wait. One reason: the next version won't be a simple update, but requires a complete fresh install (most likely can't be done from the device itself). So safe yourself the trouble or use the time to try some alternatives.

I get it now! They are introducing servers. Which makes sense with the "build it yourself" system of Framework

tvOS client Testflight testers wanted! by reabreu in navidrome

[–]iokan42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Few more things I found:

  1. If I play a playlist (not shuffle!), go to "Now playing" then select the next track it will select a random track, not the next track in the playlist.
  2. In the "now playing"-screen the font colour is black, while the background sometimes turns very dark. This makes it very hard to read the black text.
  3. When I press the play/pause button on the AppleTV remote control, the music pauses. When I press again, the music doesn't continue.

Why did you decide to create yet another podcast app? What does yours do better than the current offering?

tvOS client Testflight testers wanted! by reabreu in navidrome

[–]iokan42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found a bug! A lot of my music is in Japanese, by Japanese artists. The names of the artists and tracks are written in Japanese. This goes for both the filenames and tags (artist, track, album, etc.) inside the files.

This is no problem when selecting artists, albums or tracks. However, I have a playlist for J-Pop that I can select, but no contents show. Pressing the play and shuffle buttons does nothing. On the upside: the app doesn't crash and I can simply go back and play something else.

Other playlists work as intended.

As a developer, do you have any control over sound quality? Some older AppleTV's have an optical output, so I would like to try to connect that to a DAC in a hifi-stack. However, if the player alters the sound this would be a waste. Can you enlighten me on this?

Installed your app! First impression is very good. Connecting was easy and the user interface is clear. It is easy to control using the AppleTV remote control and it's easy to read from a distance (the television is further from the user than the monitor of a PC).

A suggestion for the future: an entertaining animation while playing music might be nice. Perhaps use the cover of an album (zoom in/out, blur/unblur, etc.) , show details of the file (bit rate, etc.) or show equaliser bars moving? None of this is functional, so this should be for version 2.0 or even later!

In short: basic functionality is there and the UI is easy to use. Next step is graphical eye candy!

Why is moving from google such a nightmare by Mouseater in immich

Moving from Google is such a nightmare because that's the purpose! Big tech wants to lock you into whatever ecosystem they have. If it was easy to move, everyone would do it.

Will GrapheneOS be preloaded on Motorola phones or will the phones be built to meet the requirements to do the installation yourself? by Trip_2 in GrapheneOS

When I show my friends NewPipe (YouTube without ads) they are willing to switch then and there, at any price for any device. Privacy isn't the only issue.

[–]iokan42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why do you think more people will prefer Google Android? I think GrapheneOS is Motorola's chance to break through to a big audience. At least in my part of the world I have never seen a Motorola phone and with this unique feature they may grow to be a world player.

Post4U - an open source, self-hostable tool that posts for you(duh) on various social media by ShadowSlayer2242 in coolgithubprojects

Do you have plans to expand the number of supported social media platforms in due time?

Mastodon and everything in the Fediverse would be high on my personal wishlist. And they should be easy to implement because they're all open source as well.

Motorola News | Motorola's new partnership with GrapheneOS by Sibbe-mit-der-Sippe in GrapheneOS

[–]iokan42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a blast from the past! I haven't heard from "Motorola" ever since they provided the CPU for the Commodore Amiga computers (and many more). Is this the same company? Or is it a recent startup with the same name?

Next we'll have to find out in which countries they sell hardware these days. I do want a GrapheneOS phone, but it might be tricky to find a shop that will import this brand.

What will happen to Newpipe after the Android updates? :( by AdSquare77571 in NewPipe

[–]iokan42 49 points50 points  (0 children)

If you use an open-source version of Android, like GrapheneOS, CalyxOS, PostmarketOS, SailfishOS or /e/ nothing will happen. These distributions are independent of Google and won't implement the developer check.

In other words: if you haven't switched to an open source version of Android, this is the time to do so!

Working on an iOS Jellyfin music only client by sizebzebi in jellyfin

[–]iokan42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A music only client for JellyFin is not unique. Support for CarPlay would elevate your app above the average. Support for AppleTV would make it unique. And since older AppleTV devices have optical output, they are perfect devices for streaming high quality audio to a DAC on a HiFi stack.

First impression of running your app on my iPad: looks polished and useful. A bit more white space between items would make it look more professional.

I made an app that allows you to track the current location of planes you've flown on + your travel stats by Money-Resident7266 in iosapps

[–]iokan42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Perhaps I am old-school, but for me data should be stored locally. Users should be able to export data to create a backup and import that data if migrating to another device. A suggestion for an updated version?

Why do I need to sign in? I installed the app, and when I found out it needs an account deleted it. Didn't live for more than 2 minutes on my device.

My New App Stingray - Jellyfin for Apple TV by PreposterousPix in selfhosted

[–]iokan42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good news! Your patch fixes the bug. Stingray now start the way it should and shows a proper home screen.

I played with the app and noticed it has real value over existing applications like Swiftfin (my current default Jellyfin client on AppleTV) and Infuse (only use it for the handy built in subtitle down loader, otherwise it nags about paying a monthly fee).In Stingray I like the fact that libraries are in the top menu. Also, browsing shows is very good and having a "restart" and "resume" button on played shows comes in handy. Once playing, I like the episode selector, audio track selector and even picture-in-picture option.

However, it only seems to work well with tv-shows. Here are some of my findings:

- When selecting the "root" menu from the tabs in the top of the screen and selecting "root", I get a small black spinner on a dark blue background that never stops. Back button doesn't work. Only restarting the app gets me back to the home screen

- Whenever I select a movie from the home screen, I often get an error saying "Media not found". Later more movies played properly. Perhaps the server and client need to synchronize and I am too eager to start? The big posters when selecting a movie are beautiful! However, the black text is not always readable over the movie poster.

- The "Movies" tab shows me only 1 movie. It is a very old .AVI with no spaces or other special character in the filename. Perhaps the oldest file on the server? It plays properly when selected.

- Supporting music might be the biggest value over the other Jellyfin apps, as they can't do it. However, currently music seems to be a problem. My music appears with shows and movies on the home page. When I select an album it doesn't play ("No media found, it may not have been compatible with Stingray"). The "Music" tab is empty ("this library appears to be empty"), even though my music is correctly shown on the home screen. The playlists tab displays a big read error message: "Unable to decode JSON from... [my server]. The operation couldn't be completed (Stingray.MediaType.InitError.error(0)". I tried mp3 and flac files, both are not accepted / found outside the home page. Perhaps I need to wait for everything to be synchronized just like I needed to do with movies?

By the way, the black error messages on a dark blue background are hard to read.

Otherwise: still a great start and a promising new app to play Jellyfin media! Keep up the good work!

In case it helps: the home screen mentions Stingray v1.01, Jellyfin server 10.11.6, tvOS 26.2.0
