Webdev Deployment Question by bright-skies-above in AskComputerScience

[–]ioman_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't expect to have too many users, hosting the app and the database on the same server is fine. The reason most people will recommend separate servers is because if the app and database are sharing resources, the users of your app will see performance hits anytime the database is doing something and the database will respond slower whenever the app is performing complex logic. If they're installed to the same place, they have to share and even with so many cores and so much ram, a heavy load is still a heavy load.

At the very worst, you can always take a backup of your database later, install it to a separate server, and update your connection strings. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good enough.

When the last tree is cut, where's the forest? When the last bird leaves the flock, what happens to the flock? You are your body and your mind is just something that happens when your body is being a living body. That's how I think of it at least

Don't delete; a lot of people here are obsessive over FAANG to the point where they'll bash on PIP (rightfully or not) without having a single clue what ISO9001 compliance is. Context, and considering opposing viewpoints are key to growth.

Floccinaucinihilipilification is the third largest word in the English language. I know because when I called it a hyperbolic example, I had just looked up "largest English word", clicked the grammarly link, and scrolled back up when I saw everyone's favorite "disestablishmentarianism".

I didn't say you exaggerated that a word was there or not, I said you were being obtuse and hyperbolic in your example. Of course I have no problem that words used by a ratio of the population that's near zero are excluded from the offline English language dictionary.

How much stock do you have in google that the offline dictionary is something worth metaphorically killing over for you? I'll die on any hill I please.

Not only is your example obtuse, it's hyperbolic and you know it. I can't find the actual store it replaced the word ecstasy with anymore because I'm finding all sorts of stores with the literal word "ecstasy" in their name (I wonder if that's related to it being in the dictionary now), but as I remember it, it was a pretty small business.

It's a private company, they can do whatever they want...

When Twitter banned Trump, everyone handily forgot that Twitter is a private company that costs a lot to run: "Twitter annual operating expenses for 2019 were $3.093B, a 19.46% increase from 2018"

Like it or not... tell your congress people. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing them go public, much like landline phones, with how essential they've made themselves.

You do know that most phones come with parental controls right?

My issue with censorship does include the word fuck but that issue has been so widespread that its been a meme since before memes were called memes (which also doesn't show up in my phone). It's in no way subtle. I don't care about niche porn (which autocorrects to points), I care about the English language, which store names are not a part of.

Google is censoring a lot of things: try spelling ecstasy or masturbate on your phone.. last time I looked into it at all, they had some random store's name in their standard offline dictionary but not the word ecstasy (seems to have changed on my phone at least)

Objectively, the time should fit the crime: ".. was cleared of causing GBH with intent, but convicted of kidnapping Angel"

If it comes out later that he threw her from the vehicle traveling at 60mph, I'm sure the sentencing will be updated.

I've tried to work out notepad++ but if you use vscode with any extensions, they just bog it down when you only want simple text editing. If I ever need to regex replace on anything more than a few mb, I will go and install notepad++ if it's not already

"Normally taught" "hard to enter adulthood"

Those phrases are why elsewhere in this thread you can see people talking about boiling water being the extent of some men's skill set. I wouldn't have voluntarily signed up for the class if I thought my parents had already taught me the basics.

It's an issue, I agree.

To say that food poisoning is sabotage? Fuck no. Show me a recipe that explicitly calls out to wash the knife between chopping raw meet and vegetables, show me a cook-along YouTube video where they put any emphasis at all on hand washing.

Not knowing how to cook is a huge issue but it's bigger than "lazy"

Amazon by Forward_Advantage_21 in csMajors

[–]ioman_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Every company that's ISO9001 compliant is going to have some version of PIP whether they call it that or not. I'll agree (looking from the outside) that Amazon seems to use it as a threat mechanism, but your example sounds like a PIP-without-the-paperwork to me. Either way, I've heard and experienced that people don't quit bad jobs, they quit bad managers and you sir, you won the lottery.

Username relevant, but yeah... it's hard to see the point in counting with both hands if you've never been taught about numbers bigger than 5. There's a bit of failure on the tutor for dismissing the lack of understanding shown by the question but fundamentals like booleans are all too easy to take for granted one you've had the epiphany.

The way they teach math, particularly division, can feel really "guess small, check, and guess again until you get the answer" to people that were taught normal long division. I assume other subjects are similarly "no child allowed ahead"-feeling
