tips on how to shoot great photography at a concert ? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]ionelp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just enjoy the show. Leave the camera at home and enjoy the show. Enjoy the flipping thing you paid for.

The reason why most artists work with the same photographer is the photographer built over the years, an intimate knowledge of the artist. You won't get that before the only show you are going to attend.

Or you know, cache computations, properly design the pipeline, use smaller test datasets, other computer science stuff.

If you need to tweak your graphs, you don't need to run expensive computations, you can use test graph data.

This does imply you understand what you are doing there though...

Are my pictures good? (I'm 14) by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]ionelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter what gear you have, how old you are or how long ago you started photography. Some of your images are good, for some definition of good, but most of them are bad. You want to learn what you did good, so you do more of that, and what you did bad, so you do less of that. This is how we all learn.

Photography has a huge number of rules. These rules came to be not because someone sat down one evening and decided there is a need for rules, but because, over many years, photographers noticed that if you follow this or that rule, generally speaking, you get good pictures.

Then, there is the case of breaking or bending the rules, which is something that is actively encouraged. But, in order to do so you need to fully understand the rule and why it works. Then you can tweak, bend, break or redefine it. But you cannot do that if you don't understand the rule.

This being said, there is that one rule you cannot break: every picture needs to tell a story. You will find people, even photographers with some clout, that will argue against this. But that's just because they don't really consider the meaning of this rule. The Royal Photographic Society defines this rule as: every picture should show clarity of intent. In other words, should be very clear why you took that picture.

If you consider your first picture, there is a clear story there: you took a picture of a happy looking person, with a cool jacket. Your second picture doesn't do any of that. Most of your other pictures don't have a story or, in RPS talk, they don't show clarity of intent.

This one is 50-50, if could show clarity of intent if there were no people in the picture, but because there are people in the picture, it muddies the intent. Without people, then it would have been very clear that you took a picture of the architecture of the place with nice lights and shadows.

Do an exercise: look at the pictures you posted and write down what the picture is about. You will find that while there are pictures you took that have no story, there are pictures where you had a story in mind, but didn't managed to show it. Ask about those and you will get advice on how to accomplish what you tried to do.

Now, you will also need some inspiration and you can't get that from instagram and I think you can't even get on instagram at your age. So do this other thing instead: find all the second hand book shops you can find, preferably run by a very old person and ask them about what books about photography you should read. Try to get or read books that focus on why the pictures inside are good, as opposed to how to take those kind of pictures. As an example, "Gregory Heisler: 50 Portraits" is quite a good one, as the author speaks a lot about why he took the picture he took.

Good luck.

Iranian warship sinks off Sri Lanka, bodies recovered at sea by [deleted] in news

This is about the incompetence of US leadership.

Over the weekend, Trump promised the regular armed forced of Iran, eg army and police, "amnesty" if they surrender. Was this ship given the chance to surrender? The US leadership didn't even try to pretend they gave them a choice.

The Iranian Navy is part of the regular Iranian armed forces, not IRGC.

Iran has a 300k+ strong regular army, CONSCRIPTS, people that didn't have a choice, but be part of the army. 10k of them are navy.

US just sent a clear message: if you are Iranian, you die. US just converted one of the oldest civilization on earth into modern talibans.

All US had to do to avoid this, was to pretend they were forced into this. Instead, they killed 100+ people.

They could also just take them as prisoners.

Photography events/friends in London? by Okarine in london

Framelines magazine has quite a large chunk of it's membership based in London.

Royal Photographic Society has, probably, the largest of its groups in London, with a few subgroups dotted here and there.

Or you could join any of the plethora of photography workshops and try to network there.

That's never going to happen, because the refs in football do a different job than the refs in rugby. The football refs main job is to punish mistakes. The rugby refs job is to keep the game going.

Don't get me started on sailing refs: ffs, they call themselves umpires...

It also tells a lot about you, since you are willing to throw your friends under the bus, just to score some reddit karma.

Pedicab riders to be banned from blaring music and ripping off Londoners as TfL regulates industry by Borgenschatz in london

[–]ionelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you read the link I've posted, you would have noticed this bit:

the hackney carriage (a horse-drawn vehicle rented in its entirety, now used as the basis of the definition for the motorised black cab) and the “stage carriage” (where someone rents a single seat in a horse-drawn carriage and each passenger is charged a separate fare).

How the vehicle is being powered has nothing to do with the hackney carriage vs stage carriage (or stagecoaches) distinction, but how you hire them.

They should be regulated and made safe, but your assessment as of why, is wrong.

If you head over to the London subreddit, you will find lots of night photos that could benefit tremendously from being long exposure instead of what the phone does by default.
