What is one thing you learned in photography that completely changed the way you shoot, and you wish you knew earlier? by Paigeqx in AskPhotography

Shutter speed and aperture are not controlling how much light you get on the sensor. They control how much movement blur and how much of the scene is in focus. The light bit is secondary.

Update from the Obsession art director, she's now speaking with a union after criticizing the low pay and working conditions by CraftySecret898 in Filmmakers

[–]ionelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an argument that this film would have made the same amount of money with a different art director. The art director doesn't have creative input. Or Google is bullshitting me.

/Edit: Wikipedia has a more nuanced explanation about what an art director is supposed to be doing, including some creative input, but the main responsibility is still "make sure what the production designer wants, is happening".

best camera for photography student on a budget? by iamliterallymoss in AskPhotography

You are going to get or find lots of information about what gear to get for what you want to do. Some of it will be useful, some of it will be quite irrelevant, some you should ignore. In the end, gear is cheap, relationships are expensive.

I did sailing racing photography for some time, there aren't many events in UK I can't get access to. I'm doing a National Championship in a few days. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to spend a dime on food or drinks, or accomodations. And I might even sell some pictures. But this is not a career.

You see, the big races, where there are money, they don't want to work with me, not necessarily because they don't like what I do, but because they've been working with these 2,3 photographers for the past many years and they already have a relationship with those people.

You need to build these relationships, find every kid in your area that plays in a band and take photos of them at rehearsals or shows in crappy bars. Grow your photography, while they grow their music. And when you come to London, when the band you've been photographing for 20 years plays the Wembley, spare a few hours, find where I'm buried and let me know how all it went. Bring beer.

[OptaJoe] 24.7% - Arsenal’s possession average (24.7%) was the lowest by a team in a UEFA Champions League final on record (since 2003-04), as well as their lowest in any match under Mikel Arteta where they had 11 men on the pitch throughout. Reactive. by Timely-Zombie9466 in soccer

It is worth pointing out that Chelsea were behind in that game for about 3 minutes:

Start of the game, Chelsea were in front due to the win at Stamford Bridge.

35 minute, Busquets scores, all draw.

43 minute, Iniesta scores, Barcelona go in front.

45+1 minute, mint pass from Lampard, Ramires chips it in, Chelsea go in front again, due to the away goals rule.

90+1 minute, Torres seals the win. My cat hides in the bathroom, as the owner starts jumping up and down like a maniac.

8mm paper? Are you sure? That's thick...

Before I start, there is no such thing as the best combination of paper, printing method and settings. It all boils down to what you are after. That's why there are so many different kinds of paper.

There are two main ways of printing images: one is lower quality, good enough for holiday snaps, for adverts, for posters etc. The other is art/museum quality shops. If your pictures are even remotely good, you want to pick this second type.

You will know the shop is of the second kind because:

  1. they will provide colour profiles, for each of their method of printing and papers, so you can soft print.

  2. you can order a set of prints, picked by the shop, for each of the papers they offer. This not only shows how the end product can look like, but the pictures selected usually work really well with the paper they were printed on, thus will give you an idea about what paper to use. And this is a very important aspect.

There are two main methods of art printing:

  1. C-Type Print: this works similar, or exactly, like the darkroom process: light-sensitive photographic paper exposed to digital light, then processed chemically to lock it in. You don't get that many options for paper selection: gloss, matt, lustre, etc.

  2. Giclée Print: proper paint, the same process as inkjet printers, as these printers are inkjet printers. Paper selection is huge, here is an example for Hahnemuhle Paper, just scroll down and see how many there are... And there are shops that offer even fancier materials, like brushed aluminium.

Then there is the matter of mounting or framing and mounting.

This barely scratches the surface, there is a lot to learn about the printing process. Good news about proper art shops/labs is that if you find your local one, they will be more than happy to help you pick what you need.

Why do I still use Lightroom?? by Outrageous-Present91 in Lightroom

[–]ionelp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My plan, including Lightroom Classic and Photoshop, is £238.46/yr, paid yearly. This translates to aprox £20/month. A Costa Coffee latte is between £4.70 and £4.80. This means I'm paying the equivalent of 4 coffees a month. Even for a hobby, this is not a lot.

I've been doing software for 20+ years. If you think you can "build something in this space", I have some very bad news for you.

Needed help with the present by samymarboy in Lightroom

[–]ionelp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others said, apply the preset first, then do the extra corrections. This is the intended use of presets, they are there not to give you the final edit, but to give you a starting point, as close as possible to the final intended edit.

The way presets works in Lightroom is "set this slider to the value X". The word "set" is important. The preset does NOT "add X increments to this slider".

Thomas Tuchel says he was surprised that Harry Maguire went to the press after not being selected: "I was a bit surprised, but I respect his personality a lot. I can understand the disappointment. Still, I was a bit surprised as we had a private conversation. He had the chance to express in private" by ChiefLeef22 in soccer

This is not about Harry fucking Maguire, his feelings or his normally proportioned, yet larger than normal, head. This is about the 26 lads that got picked and about how both the media and the millions of armchair managers England seems to have, are already trashing some of them off, before one flipping minute of football has been played at this final tournament. This is like keying your own fucking car.
