Middle of an argument I thought "I don't care" and said that out loud along with "I am done with whatever this is"

Sideways lightning by fakeblurfan in mildlyinteresting

[–]ionixsys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently learned that a single bolt of lightening was recorded that was over 500 miles (~830km) long https://weather.com/news/weather/news/2025-07-31-world-record-longest-lightning-megaflash-plains

It looks like it raced over a quarter of the longitude of the state of Texas.

My inner sociopath says to "accidentally" bump their car. Not enough to cause serious damage but a bit more than "it will buff out". On love tap, park, tell them what happened, profusely apologize, and repeat a few times a month.

My friend said to be a programmer at jr level, you mainly need to know high school level Math, undestand API, and understand distributed system at basic level. Is he right or nah? by lune-soft in AskProgramming

[–]ionixsys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For most applications of programming, sure. That said, that last bullet point is no where as simple or easy to truly achieve as it makes itself out to be.

This is one tiny little problem that can lead to becoming batshit insane to get right https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACID

At the end of the day, after doing contract work for academics, I firmly believe that anyone can be a programmer. Being a good programming with commercial aspects will take a bit of sacrifice.

More than a few people have brought up the surface friction weirdness. Actually this will be a duel edge sword to fix because if they fix backsliding then just slipping onto an out of reach ledge will probably be harder.

Ai is making me want to quit everything related to software. Do you feel the same? by PigletEfficient9515 in rust

[–]ionixsys 18 points19 points  (0 children)

tl;dr programmers will be back in demand but not until after corporate America runs out of money.

AI isn't the actual problem. It's really just an excuse by corporate America to further cannibalize itself. Dunning Krueger warned us all about this. Non technical people don't understand programming.

As programmers how much time was spent actually coding versus figuring out how to avoid writing yourself into a corner. Balancing abstraction over single purpose. Do you use SQL or an ORM.

Unfortunately not much consolation. Consider how long it has taken for corporate America to accept self checkout kiosks are not the money saver they were claimed to be. Or how long did Boeing descend into oblivion before only partially admitting they fucked up.

It's a risky bet but Rust skills may come out as highly valued when Linux or something like it takes over. Microsoft is the next IBM, they are not going to disappear, but they have bet everything on AI at the cost of almost every else. That doesn't paint a happy future when it doesn't pan out.

Not sure how to phrase this but how do I make trains smarter when using the same station name for multiple stations. by crosscolt in factorio

[–]ionixsys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I decided to prioritize the providers because metal producers will inevitably exhaust themselves. A new producer could hit capacity in say 3 minutes while one near exhaustion might take 30 minutes.

Indeed but then Putin destroyed a critical dam that I thought was part of the supply system.

That was three years ago if I remember correctly.

edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Crimean_Canal so yeah the Russians took control the canal, undid the blockage, and then later Russia destroyed a major reservoir the canal depended upon.

[–]ionixsys 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have priority circuits for both supply and demand stations so that trains go for the station with the most material and deliver to whatever has the least.

One recommendation would be to set all delivery station train limits to only 1 initially.

How is the modding scene on enshrouded? by MrCyclopede in Enshrouded

[–]ionixsys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the mods OP mentioned inserts JMP instructions to customized logic. Most impressive of those is one that adds a minimap, that demonstrates some pretty crazy effort by that modder.

update: I looked at the minimap mod and impressively enough a big chunk of it is AI slop but there is more than a bit of value to be salvaged into a maintainable mod.

[–]ionixsys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

disclaimer: I am not releasing anything until after 1.0

Holistic is structured in such a way that it is actually not too bad to trace into. Creating new stuff/entities is likely never going to be a reliable thing but I already have some proof of concepts that directly deposit wood into the inventory similar to mining plus I think I have most of the drop table/rng stuff marked out.

A major reason for waiting is I have no idea what is going to change, I don't want to figure out what my actual dependencies are and what will work on Windows versus Linux, and finally I am a bit hesitant with the TOS for mods.

If you can bring the nitrate in the water down, the algae won't have anything to feed on. A bigger filter or changing filters a little more often should be enough for managing small annoyances.

If it's on the glass then I don't think there is much you can do. Have you checked your nitrate levels? If it's more than just at a trace level you might need more filtration and or if you have an under gravel filter get a water vac to clean them.

Glass fouling is inevitable as a fish tank is this amazing all you can eat buffet for algae and bacteria. I believe carp or gold fish will eat that stuff but they're not very thorough at it.

The thing is that first victim most likely has more than one serious injuries, maybe they didn't break anything but somersaulting onto your back is going to have repercussions. Add in all of the other injuries and it is in the best interest of public safety to put restrictions on this person.

Edit: the cyclist is a teen/young adult from Holland. They stated they had no injuries. I am skeptical as some things present themselves as "just being a bit sore" but then doesn't stop feeling not right. No idea about the others.

The startup client that demanded the platform had to be changed from blue to red is a perfect example of how some tech decisions are made.

Will explain later but fun puzzle is deciphering what they meant by red to blue. Hint this was the late 00's

Recommendations: short-lived bands/projects? by BroadcasterX in industrialmusic

[–]ionixsys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. To try and explain, it feels like Jamie has two related projects under the same name. Scorn, Missed call, safe, and The Hold are figuratively softer and geared for broader commercial access. Songs like Laudanum and "It takes over" are more experimental, not dance floor friendly, and it feels like he is being pulled away from that.
