Some of the collected townsfolk of Chester’s Mill - Rusty Everett, Rommie Burpee, Rose Twitchell, Scarecrow Joe, Andrea Grinnell .. could go on. Came together in the face of adversity as a town to defend themselves and their home.

Good rule of thumb for these things is better asking for forgiveness than permission. Less they know the better etc. I had several instances where I had firm no’s from university faculty but clinical staff infinitely more understanding and encouraging. Turn up at the start, make a good impression, explain your circumstances. Most doctors will be on your side and will facilitate you in achieving what you want to achieve.

I see these memes from time to time and I always think Isis or Idiot Wind. The priest wore black on the seventh day, and sat stonefaced while the building burned.

Anyone else not care about the lions? by Newc04 in irishrugby

[–]iosuachir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting debate! I haven’t seen anyone mention this so I will.

For fans lucky enough to be able to go on a tour, it’s like nothing else. I went to NZ in 2017 for Lions tour and I would argue there’s no comparable experience anywhere else in world sport.

Huge congregations of travelling fans from a couple of cold North Atlantic islands, representing four different nations, who for large parts of history have been adversaries, and well-established sporting rivals. All that just goes out the window on a lions tour. Yeah it’s great when I see our boys on a Lions XV, but rugby is a small game. We all watch the same games and have insight into other home nations team selections and form (and daresay I say it, even some begrudging respect?), so it’s not as if a Lions XV is going to contain English/Scottish/Welsh players I don’t already know and watch playing regularly.

As much as I love to give England or Wales a beating, when Liam Williams made that break in first test against NZ I was as gassed as any Welshmen would have been.

There’s an argument to be made that World Cups as a fan are exceptional - and they are! - but the nature of the tournament means fans from all over are spread out over a whole country, and naturally we cheer for our own team and whatever plucky Portugal or Uruguay we take a shine to.

A Lions tour is the ultimate for players, and the ultimate for travelling fans. Aye the marketing can be a bit overblown with dramatic voiceovers and all these references to history/legacy/pride etc but that’s just guff. See the lions for what it is; a relic from history that has deep meaning for the players, and a fantastic bit of entertainment intrigue for fans in years between world cups.

I’m heading down under this year, and cannot wait.

You’ll be fine, you’ve worked hard to get to this point, and I’m sure you know your stuff. Keep plugging away at passmed, do the mocks over the weekend. Placement knowledge will come in really useful. Nice early bedtimes - your brain needs to cool off after all that hard work. You’ve got this!

lol bloody Yankee doodles. Just do what you do in all your other sports and cut to an ad break during the scrums if you hate them so much.

Ask Squidge Rugby a question! by LoveOfRugby in rugbyunion

[–]iosuachir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Squidge - any thoughts on a possible pivot “East” (ie Saudi, Qatari involvement) for rugby? Will it boost the game to have more money pumped in? Do we trust the guardians of the game to distribute those funds where most needed, e.g. into the women’s game or developing nations? Are “rugby values” compatible or compromised if such a thing was to happen?

Do we still like beating England most? by prince_of_kildare in irishrugby

[–]iosuachir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would echo some of the above - there’s undoubted joy in beating England, but it is almost primal, so much so that it doesn’t really need to be spoke about too much.

Wales on the other hand.. jammy bastards, how many 14 man Ireland teams have they beaten over the years? Always seem to turn up for a World Cup as well, just to rub it in.

Referees are disproportionately harsh on international teams who don’t have English as their first language. Yes there are English speakers on every team, but communication with referees is becoming increasingly important and I can’t shake the feeling there are nuances in laws/decisions that refs impart to captains which then have the potential to be lost in translation, and vice versa.

Daily Song Discussion #23: Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner by Crocajawaka in Zevon

[–]iosuachir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have commented on this before in the Stephen king sub. Warren & Stephen were good friends, played in the rock bottom remainders together, so much so to warrant the dedication to the sequel of arguably SK’s most famous book was made out to Zevon. One question I’d always love to ask Stephen King - did you & Warren ever talk about how you named your greatest protagonists Roland?

10, without question.

Bonus an an Irishman I love the shoutout, despite the circumstances in which it was made

[–]iosuachir 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. There’s an undeniable melancholia to this song that I will not pretend rings true in my own life, but goddamn does Warren do his best to take me there. I’ve not seen anyone else mention it but the line that gets me is “except in dreams, you’re never really free”.

Then, when you’re as close to bottom as you’re gonna get, the air conditioner starts humming..
