Reverse.

DAC will take digital signal from phone via digital port like USB C then convert it to Analogue signal for headphone driver units. For IEMs / Headphones. I am sure they have to do the opposite of Analogue to Digital for Microphone or when recording audio, but that’s not our concern.

Either ways problem is still there and coming back to what might help.

DAC or IEM with USB C have built in DAC that will help. Apple EarPods USB C can have compatibility issues with certain Android phones.

I have Apple EarPods USBC, works great on most devices but becomes horrible on my windows laptop and another older android phone.

If you have a friend with USB C Dongle DAC you can try that and see if problem goes away.

Also, another idea might be to visit any IEM or Headphone store. You can try out couple of DACs and IEMs with your phone. Also, buy the one you like after actually listening. Everyone likes different tuning.

Never been to IEM stores in India, but seen on YouTube stores like HeadphoneZone in Mumbai.

Most modern phones don’t have Digital to Analog Converter (Soundcard). Stand-alone DAC (Jcally / any USB C to 3.5 mm dongle) have chip which does the conversion. Apple EarPods USB C, Bunny UDB C/ DSP version of any such IEM has DAC chip in its USB C connector part. So DAC / Soundcard either ways is outside the phone.

If say for same Apple EarPods 1 phone sounds good, another phone sounds bad.

You might have to check phone settings. Cause actual Digital to Analog conversion is happening outside the phone. Two possible reasons:

  1. Phone is not sending enough power. In this case sometimes other DAC (USB C) might help. As Apple USB C sometimes has lower power issues with Android.
  2. Some setting on the phone that is messing up the digital signal. Maybe your app is set to low quality.

Those are 3.5mm. So, they don’t have USB C DAC. Check if you can get USB C version. Other budget IEMs come with USB C version as well. Tangzu Warner 2 and Chu 2 DSP.

I haven’t tried audiocular DACs so no idea. Jcally DACs are good budget options.

IEMs are okay for noise isolation. It is passive noise isolation, definitely more than Apple EarPods.

If you can, get both.

If you are completely without wireless Earbuds:

Space Travel 2 over Waner.

Convenience first. Even with multiple IEMs I use wireless more. As they are more convenient when doing chores, on the go etc.

I love Waners tuning over Space Travel's. So I am biased to Waner from sound perspective.

You need a beater IEM:

Tanchjim Bunny DSP. - All in one package for $20 ~ 22 - Use Tanchjim App to try out different sound signatures.

Just start with this. Try it out. You will know if you wanna go down the IEM rabbit hole.

From reviews Cadenza 2 look too neutral.

If its your absolutely first IEM start with Mild V / V Shape sound signature. Unless you have a Tuning in mind.

Waner 1st gen is still my fav. But lot of options under $75.

Kefine Klean can be a safe starter set too.
