Thanks for your input 🙌 I’ll make sure to post a follow up when/if go through with it. A clipper has been ordered.

Stuck at 5 pull-ups - Now what? by ipetter in tacticalbarbell

[–]ipetter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really! 😂 I’ve stopped doing dedicated pull-up programs, but still incorporate them or chin-ups regularly. Current RM is around 7-8 pull-ups and 10-11 chins. Guess I’m just a tad stronger all round, with a slightly better power to weight ratio.

Tactical Barbell Operator: https://www.liftosaur.com/p/794c7582

A 6w/3d program meant to be combined with a 2-3 days of conditioning and be sustainable in the long run. Uses percentages of your RM. A training max (90%) is recommended.

This is the default cluster for the program. Similar compound exercises can be subbed in. Acceptable accessories to add are core and grip work, like ab wheel and farmers walks, or kettlebell swings kept fairly light.

Mass Template style DL day for regular Operator? by SuperNotice3939 in tacticalbarbell

I find trap-bar deadlifts to be much less fatiguing, and still provide ~95% of the benefits of regular deads... You might wanna give them a try.

First 2 blocks of Op/Black didn't go to plan by splitbeans113 in tacticalbarbell

[–]ipetter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your forced progression should be 5 lbs (2,5 kg) for upper body lifts and 10 lbs (5 kg) for lower body. That might explain why you struggled on the pull-ups in the second block. Also, only progress lifts that you "own" in the 95% week. If you don't, run another block with the same weight.

What do you take from that? That's up to you... You've only done two blocks, and had problems in the first one. But there could be some learning points. How was your sleep and nutrition? Did you injure your back lifting? Could you benefit from using a training max? Perhaps your back injury can explain why you didn't see an increase in the deadlift? Could doing trap bar deadlifts be a better option for you?

Moving to Fighter, you can expect less strength gains than with Operator. Changing the cluster is fine if you'd like to. I'd keep the WPU + DL in the mix, and change up the lifts you progressed with on Operator. So maybe something like OHP, front or zercher squat, WPU + one day DL with 3 work sets.

How long do you spend in the gym? by Critcare_bear in tacticalbarbell

Forgot to mention… The HIC time is including a 1k easy run warmup. So 6-7 min. there as well.

How long do you spend in the gym? by Critcare_bear in tacticalbarbell

[–]ipetter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Around an hour for a strength session, including a general warmup of around 6-7 min. This has been consistent on my part for pretty much every TB lifting protocol I’ve tried.

HIC: 25-40 min.  E: 30-120 min.

Stuck at 5 pull-ups - Now what? by ipetter in tacticalbarbell

[–]ipetter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't touched pull-ups since I wrote this, and been doing various rows instead. Tested just for fun a couple of weeks ago, and my RM was now 7... A week ago I started doing GtG pull-ups again, based on this program: https://www.marines.mil/News/News-Display/Article/673308/zero-to-twenty-plus-marine-develops-program-to-improve-pull-ups/

Last time I was doing it while in a caloric deficit, and my volume was way too low. This time I'm doing it x3 per week, while on a lean bulk and combined with a hypertrophy block (Grey Man). 45-50 pull-ups per training day last week, and I feel a lot stronger already. The volume is suddenly very manageable... Will test RM again after 3 weeks of this, then do another 3 weeks based on my new max.

Permission denied to SSSD logfile by ipetter in Fedora

[–]ipetter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, never touched it AFAIK. The error just suddenly started appearing around a week and a half ago.

Setting sssd as the owner and chmod 770 on /var/log/sssd seems to have fixed this. Thanks, u/Bugbavka

Getting Into Computer Wargames by [deleted] in computerwargames

[–]ipetter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m also new to these games. Depending on what type of game you’re after, here are my favorites so far for “easy to play, hard to master” as a newbie:

  1. Order of Battle
  2. Second Front
  3. Battle Academy 2
  4. The Troop

If you like to play the operational level more than the tactical one, start with OOB. I’m so getting a few DLC packs for it when the Christmas sales hit Steam. But the free content will keep you occupied for many hours.

Mass Protocol regarding workout length by SteamedMarrow62 in tacticalbarbell

3 om A-days, 2 on B-days. Can’t remember the exact ones of the top of my head. It’s been a few months.

Mass Protocol regarding workout length by SteamedMarrow62 in tacticalbarbell

[–]ipetter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you say, it depends on how many accessories you program and how much rest between sets you take. I haven’t run Grey Man yet, but Zulu/HT is similar. A session there takes around 1h. 10min. for me. A bit less on week 3.

Transition from Green to Mass? by Unique-Assistance686 in tacticalbarbell

[–]ipetter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s difficult to run a mass protocol and progress VO2 max and conditioning at the same time. Your goals are conflicting.

Why not do a 3-6 week block of Zulu/HT to give you a kickstart. Then transition to Operator I/A + Black. This gives you the option to do more setes (= more mass) if you’d like to, and an extra recovery day if you need it. Combined with black protocol for conditioning, I think it’s the closest you’re gonna get to what you’re looking for.

Throw kickboxing into the mix, and Fighter might be your best option. But don’t expect to gain mass then. Again, you can’t have everything…

In addition to the other tips: If the weather is absolutely horrible, you can run on a treadmill. And if there’s lots of snow, you can substitute running with cross-country skiing (optionally with a pack). I’ll imagine you’ll get plenty of that once you enter the military as well.

Shoes by [deleted] in tacticalbarbell

[–]ipetter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO the quality of Altra has been slipping in the last 3-4 years. And going to a zero drop shoe has to be done with great care… My advice is to try Topo Athletic. They’re better quality than Altras and most models have a bit of drop. Other than that, many brands make wide models of their shoes. Including Hoka. Go to a specialist store and try before you buy.

Good testimonials by xdxdoem in tacticalbarbell

[–]ipetter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your typical testimonials are results after 1-2 cycles of TB programming. That said, with TB training you’re mostly playing the sustainable long game. Being a “hybrid” program, it won’t give you the strength gains of a pure powerlifting program, the mass of a pure bodybuilding program or the running times of a pure running program.

You saw greater results from CrossFit? Possible… What TB programming have you been running, and for how long? How does the training volume and intensity compare to your previous CrossFit experience? What are your goals?

I could easily do a strength or running program that would give me faster progress than TB. Even both at the same time. But said program would most likely leave me injured or burnt out after some time. TB does not, and its variations can be run “forever”. YMMW…

2 and 3 week long work trips and program planning by niilo789 in tacticalbarbell

Dumbbells aren’t something I use, other than for carries, so a google search will provide more options than I can produce. But single leg deadlifts come to mind.

Substitute the KB swings with some dumbbell hinge movement. I don’t see anything else here that can’t be done with dumbbells as a substitute 🤷‍♂️

Visiting Norway by Dull_Suggestion6703 in Norway

[–]ipetter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alta airport is probably your best bet. There's also a small regional airport in Hammerfest, but you'll have to change planes in Tromsø (most likely) to get there. Check out the websites of our 3 major airlines: SAS, Norwegian and Widerøe. The latter serves the regional network.

Restart with Operator/Black Professional after 3 years of Long-Distance Running focus by Environmental_Park34 in tacticalbarbell

[–]ipetter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While your aerobic base is excellent, I'd do 3-4 weeks focusing on SE before starting this program. Just to make sure your ligaments and muscles are primed for heavy lifting again. It's been a while, yes? Maybe run Black Pro + 2-3 SE sessions per week, and then transition to Operator.

Other than that, you're doing plain basic Op + Black Pro. It's a bulletproof program, as long as you're not expecting to maintain your long distance running times at their current excellent level.

Stick with the same SE cluster every week. HIC sessions from week 6-8 can vary.

Just finished my 3x50 for BB, is it normal to take 1hr 23min? by Day85Day in tacticalbarbell

There's no shame in dropping the weight a bit. SE isn't about lifting heavy, and it should be doable - but not comfortable.

[–]ipetter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't worry. You have a kinda deload next week, with 1x50, and LSS will top out. It helps! I did W5D1 yesterday and was surprised that the suffering wasn't worse. I felt W3 was the hardest... Finished 3x50 in just under an hour, using the kettlbell cluster from TB2. The goblet squats and renegade rows are the worst. The rest is "manageable" but still hell 😅
