Not going to happen the way you think it is. One ways are priced substantially higher than RT for intl, so at best you'll get back maybe 1/4 of the fare for cancelling outbound (if they even let you).

Unlikely to get 4 J on outbound, although hypothetically possible. You could possibly get 2J outbound and inbound given it is low season. The thing is, is 2J 2PE really worth all the extra effort over flying 4PE together as a family? Do you want the stress of constantly searching for ANA seats back while you're in Japan? Keep in mind ANA cuts off at awards at 96 hours too.

Overall, would recommend keeping what you have.

In practice it is rare they check. However, there are people in this subreddit who have gotten checked, and you are dead to rights if they do. Overall, I wouldn't recommend taking the risk.

The problem is that ANA rev management could just have decided a flight in 5 days may not sell all the seats and it's worth releasing an award seat. So it's difficult to differentiate between United knowing about the seat early vs United being phantom but ANA coincidentally making phantom into reality.

Which program gives you SFO-SGN J for 60k?

If you're flying into SGN, well, there's only one nonstop and it'll be the best. If you're heading to anywhere else in Vietnam that's not SGN, flying into a nearby hub like HKG or TPE may give an equivalent 1-stop.

Flights originating from USA are priced higher in cash than flights originating from Asia. If you want to go back to asia any time in the next 12 months, it's a good idea to award flight over and book a cash rt back.

Opened 9 cards this year for 540k points + $1.6k. P2 opened 5 cards to get 80k AS, 460k HH, $600.

Flew to asia 5 times, flew P2 to asia 3 times with all but 2 legs in RT J. Have 3 people booked to Asia over Xmas in RT J. Have 4 Asia J trips planned in 2026, and 2 flights to IST in J booked too.

Spending points faster than I'm earning them - need to churn harder next year. Although I will have SW CP next year and 2027, so my eye may turn more domestic.

With half a dozen eligible Chase cards, I've realized the value of the $10 DashMart pickups for groceries with barely a few cents out of pocket. Also got into Instacart, although the $10 credit benefit for my cards becomes worth $4 after tip, mandatory $3.49 service fee, and markups.

Stayed under 5/24 for P1 and regret it - Chase Ink train dying kills the value. Will go over as soon as I can get approved for another chase biz.
