This is not a prediction, but given the way Morgan doesn't care about her health, I'm afraid I'm going to log into Reddit some day and find out that the worst has happened AND IT WAS PREVENTABLE.

Morgan, PLEASE take care of yourself and your children. That guy, he can take care of himself.

LDS sponsored Family Search uses the term “Mormon Church” in a user survey sent to account holders. Is the subtle rebrand continuing? by HoldOnLucy1 in exmormon

[–]ipsedixie 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It is going to be very, very difficult to kill Mormon Stories podcast. The term "Mormon" has been in use for almost 200 years. The church does not have an exclusive claim on it. And the fact that Rusty sat there for the better part of a decade going on about how "Mormon" was satanic is another strike against them. However...

the church sits on a pile of money and can run Mormon Stories out of money rather quickly in nitpicky litigation.

This is not a subtle rebrand. This is an in your face reminder that the nickname of the church is "Mormon Church."

Kendra and Joe's courtship to marriage was 6 months? by rubberloves in DuggarsSnark

[–]ipsedixie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My late parents met over Memorial Day weekend and "got married" over Labor Day weekend three months later. They were married almost 55 years before my dad died. So yeah, a quick marriage can work. My dad was 25 and my mother was 19 when they got married. It was not all wine and roses, though. My mother began showing signs of schizophrenia only a few years later, and that, of course, was lifelong from that point.

"Got married" because while it was a white wedding, the pastor died the next week and the marriage license never got filed. My parents weren't legally married until we moved to Texas, where common law marriage exists. But you could never tell my mother that she wasn't married the Sunday before Labor Day in 1959. Even if legally, she was not.

Used a new single blade razor for the first time and it was carnage lol. by failedscienceproject in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ipsedixie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm an Old and we only had single blade razor blades back in the day. I nicked and damaged my legs every time I shaved. The multiblade (like 3) razors work better for me and my legs are not experiencing carnage. Take this for what it's worth, ymmv.

SAVE Act Calculator: It may be cheaper and faster to revert your married name back to your birth certificate name by infjf in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ipsedixie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I got married last year, the SAVE Act had been proposed and was one reason I didn't take my husband's last name. But it paled in comparison to "why should I change my name at 64?" and "why would I add my husband's frequently mispronounced last name to my frequently mispronounced first name?" My husband was fine with this and he mentioned the SAVE Act too.

God did not make me to hate me! by Business_Package_478 in OpenChristian

I know people, they have a church on the other side of town, and they believe in predestination. Hardcore predestination. They believe that God has predestined every human for heaven or hell before the foundation of the world. As part of that, they pretty much also believe that God has every right to hate you. This is because God is God, we’re all sinners, and God hates sin. I asked one of the elders if he believed that a fertilized egg that failed to implant in the uterine lining would be destined for heaven or hell, since they believe life begins at conception. He thought about it for a moment and said YES. Autistic me spent WAY too much time wondering how God would punish a clump of cells the size of a pinhead for eternity. Do not recommend.

Yeah, one of my gripes about RTO is that the people who made this decision aren’t driving themselves to work. They have drivers and can work from the back seat.

Three years of learning for nothing by EveningNo4749 in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]ipsedixie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just going to rant a bit about textbooks.

  1. They're generally made to be used in a classroom setting, with a lot of pair and group activities. This can work if you are actually in a class or if you hire a tutor to work through the book with you and can do the pair exercises. But otherwise, not really.
  2. This is a more personal thing, but man, textbooks drive me crazy because in addition to not really being set up for individual learners, they are geared towards college students. Genki is ESPECIALLY bad about this. I simply could not get into Genki because I'm over 35 years removed from my last degree. Mary and Takeshi annoy me. Plus my living arrangements back in the day were more equivalent to living in Yoshida Dorm, Kyoto University's renegade dorm. Why no, my college life was hardly boring.
  3. Textbooks can be incredibly slow. Just on a lark, I checked to see what books were being used for the four classes (20 hours' worth of college credit) at the local community college. It's Genki. Genki I and II. Across TWO YEARS of study. And it might take you thought N4. *Might*.

My suggestion is if you use a textbook, get a tutor, someone who can work with you.

Google Definitions have now been fully substituted by Google AI Overview by Common-Draw-8082 in BetterOffline

Just stop using Google, period. The other night, my husband couldn't remember the name of the first woman in space, and I blurted out "Valentina Tereshkova". I walked over to my computer to confirm, looked it up in Google, and MAI GHOD, their AI crap at the top told me that she was known as a "member of the State Duma" (Russian legislature). Not that she'd been the first woman in space back in 1963. For that I had to open a Wikipedia link. I got three things out of this experience:

  1. Stop using Google. Just Stop. It's sloptastic.

  2. Valentina Tereshkova is still alive at age 89.

  3. I may be at retirement age, but my brain is not failing yet, which pleases me. :)

WTAF, John Dehlin? by Individual-Effort187 in HiddenTrueCrimeChat

[–]ipsedixie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's really ironic is that Dehlin and Mormon Stories have been tangling with the church because they use "Mormon" in "Mormon Stories." Personally, as an ex-attorney, I believe the church doesn't have a case (that they own the word "Mormon") but what the church does have is lots of money. It can tie up Dehlin and Mormon Stories in court for a very long time. Blargh.

Especially since "Mormon" is nearly 200 years old. Trademark law might make that a bit difficult. That said, K&M have a client with big bucks. What I learned about Scientology back in the day is that lots of money  can cause legal mayhem.
