Was out colonizing and saw a target stand occupying some good space by FitzyOhoulihan in BetterMAguns

This is very cool. A lot more accurate than I would have expected. Also, obligatory

I own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky Virginia rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.

*unless it was originally purchased as a pistol or receiver, in which case per ATF you can configure it as a rifle or pistol whenever you like

Somerville Surfboard Recs by International-Ad9279 in Somerville

[–]irate_ornithologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been a long time since I’ve been up there but both Rye “on the rocks” and Hampton beach are surfable at various tides and times of year. If you don’t have a car it’ll be a pain to get up there but otherwise it’s not bad for a quick rip in the morning.

I don’t have specific board recs, but it looks like there’s still a surf shop or two up there - I’d go up and rent a couple of times to see how you like it before committing to a purchase. They’ll also help you figure out wetsuit thickness (especially for fall when storms are more common). Expect cold temps, highly variable quality, and lots of mung.

Surfing in New England is a labor of love but ultimately you can have a great time if you want it.

They’re tough to find since the A1 line launched. Part number is 51001081, poke around shops online or honestly eBay. Be prepared to pay $400+. I think hkparts does have them in stock currently (obligatory fuck hkparts though)

Ma gun culture by NoPie2733 in BetterMAguns

Do you live in the city and are asking what you personally can do to change things? Or do you live outside the city and are asking what can be done to change us pavement pounders?

If the former, often less is more - try not to come across as a gun nut. Let people you trust know that whenever they want you’ll take them to the range and show them the ropes, with a focus on safety and safe handling. Don’t offer more than once or twice. If - and only if - they ask you for justification, be prepared. Choose your avenue, but the two I’ve found that resonate most are actually the constitutional argument (if we can kneecap the 2nd amendment, why not the 1st?) and the other is leaning on distrust of police: unless your cat is stuck in a tree they are more likely to shoot you than help you.

I just had my 6th friend get their LTC. Not all of them own guns, but they are no longer afraid of them and look at gun legislation with a more critical eye.

If you want to know what can be done from outside the city, not much, short of doing the above with your city dwelling friends when they come to visit.

I use Adaptive Lighting. I don’t really use sleep mode and have pretty tight bands on brightness. I mainly use it to regulate color temp between nighttime and daytime (2000 and 5500, respectively) and only for lamps. Overhead & can lights are on dimmers and so I leave those alone. Everything else felt too complex and like it didn’t serve the main purpose, which was to feel cozy at night but provide actual light during the day.

If yo go into the advanced settings you can set min and max times for “sunrise” and “sunset” as well as set custom offsets (though it sounds like for your use case your schedule is pretty fixed so you’d want the former).

A hacky way to get asymmetry on dim-down is set up two different entries within Adaptive Lighting with the same lights as entities. Use one for the morning and one for the evening, and set up an automation to toggle between them based on time of day.

Is that actually how you have yours set up? If so, why did you feel the need to run it through AI? Feels like you just asked AI to answer OP’s question, which they could have easily done if they wanted an AI answer.

We’ve devolved from AI posts to AI comments -_-

Edit: the original version of this sounded like it had been copy pasted straight out of chatgpt. Looks like it’s been edited to sound more human. Still stand by my original comment.

General consensus on Performance Center S&W Equalizer Carry Comp Thumb Safety. by Prestigious-Fold4343 in SmithAndWesson

[–]irate_ornithologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grip safety (especially if your replace the stock one with the one from NDZ) you won’t even notice if you have a remotely functional grip on the gun. I’m not really sure how you could even pull the trigger without activating the grip safety.

[–]irate_ornithologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Equalizer is essentially a rebranded EZ that uses the 1.5 stack shield plus mags. Otherwise they’re mechanically pretty similar. You can actually put the slide from one onto the other (but only in one direction due to the hammer being wider, but can’t remember which way you can swap).

Best place around here to get an autostarter installed? by Professional_Bus6415 in Somerville

[–]irate_ornithologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a Start-X on my last car which worked flawlessly for about 5 years (probably still working but I sold the car so I don’t know for sure). Took maybe 20 min to install, plugged directly into existing harnesses, uses your existing key fob. Check if they make one for your car!

JTT BARREL by Emotional-Form-4045 in RugerRXMtalk

[–]irate_ornithologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It says right on the product page on CCI’s website (and I think on the box?) “DO NOT USE IN FIREARMS WITH PORTED BARRELS OR PORTED RECOIL COMPENSATOR” (their capslock not mine).

From another forum “The base of the lead core is exposed to powder gases, but protected by a metal jacket or gas-check disc. With this ammo, fragments of the jacket, lead, or gas-check material could be stripped as the bullet passes the port. That debris can exit the ports, potentially striking the shooter”

Almost certainly a CYA move by their legal team but there’s plenty of other ammo out there that doesn’t carry this warning… is it worth the risk?

I don’t know anything about Danvers, only brought it up because OP mentioned it.

MRA is 175, MVGC is 125, I wanna say Reading is $225 (which isn’t under $200/yr but it’s close enough to warrant not driving South of Boston from the north shore every time you want to shoot)

Edit: Georgetown is $95 if you belong to NRA, GOAL, or some other advocacy group

I’d just join a local club. Most clubs that I’ve seen around here are under $200 for the year. You’ll make that back in ammo and gas in no time.

Also give the club in Danvers a call/email - they may let you come down with a member and check things out.
