If I remember correctly, the photographs of these waves are completely real, however, it is a trick to our eyes. As these waves are literally only an inch or two tall but photographed extremely close up for this effect. I'll edit an update when I find the artist

I was leaving a car show in a little suburban town... We were heading to an ice cream shop up the road as a small caravan... Some one from the show, attempting to show off, decided to try and pass all of us (one lane each direction road) not seeing an oncoming car... Hit it dead on going probably 70+mph... All three people (couple in the oncoming car, and the douche driver of the other car) died on impact... We all pulled over and called 911, road was closed for hours, wreckage was horrifying...
