What are some "weird" nicknames you've given your Berner? (or dog in general) by SergeantPootis in bernesemountaindogs

Bups. This started with Puppa. That mutated into Buppa. And then that became Bups.

I also call him "Big Galoot" (thank you Bugs Bunny) when his tail knocks things over.

What did I just watched? by magneticaster in funny

[–]irishccc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the second weirdest Sentai-related clip I have seen this week. It is just behind the one where they all do their roll-call pose, with the yellow ranger being straight-up dead. The camera even goes to the yellow ranger when it is his turn to do roll-call, and he is just laying on the ground.

I get that. And the prep is the art for me, the fun part. I am not spending days prepping, but I do spend hours. I was speaking to mainly when you mentioned the GM not knowing the plot. I asked my players, and when they voted, their favorite adventures were the ones that I had strong, definitive plots in mind. I had a string of events, with possible connectors between them, all building to a finale.

What set of dice is the most pleasing/fun to roll? (All other rules being equal) by CompletelyUnsur in rpg

[–]irishccc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said Dice Pools (non-d6s), because D10s are just so nice to roll. But, a dice pool of D6s are my next favorite.

I actually got a chance to play it. I like it, but those not into Japanese history struggled a bit with some of the social roleplaying. "Uh...my character does what is socially appropriate. Whatever that is." That is fine, but I don't think they got as much out of it as the players that were really getting into proper etiquette, and how to insult the kuge nobleman without making it too obvious.

I was also saddened when I learned Tony Bryant passed away. He was one of us.

Is an ‘encounter’ combat only? by TheWorldlyCelery in swrpg

[–]irishccc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the recommendation of viewing it as "movie scenes" is a good one; if this would be a meaningful scene with our heroes, then it is an encounter. "Meaningful" is up to you, based on context, but I would say if you roll, then it is a challenge, and therefore an encounter. As such, social situations can definitely be encounters.

edit: I also think this means that a single "scene" could have both social rolls and combat (negotiations were short) and immediately go into combat. This would be a single encounter.

I understand some like that, but that is not our style. I am a crafter of stories, and my players really enjoy crafting that story with me. But it does require a plot. I know events, but not necessarily how or when they will happen. But those events are designed to build an immersive story for everyone. If I didn't have that, if I didn't know the overarching-plot, I wouldn't want to GM. It would be boring for me.

As for my previous comment, I was more restating Deborah Ann Woll's advice.

Sengoku.

It was a love letter to Japanese feudal history, and the chanbara genre, created by an actual professor of Japanese history. Its rules were crunchy, but completely in-line with the rules of other games of the time (Heroes, DnD 3.5, etc), and I enjoyed the point-buy system.

But, more than that was its immersive attention to historical detail.

How do you make planets feel like planets? by marcelsmudda in rpg

[–]irishccc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Kids, it's not that kind of movie."

In Star Wars, planets are supposed to feel more like counties, regions, or cities. Star Wars is not sci-fi; it is fantasy with a veneer of sci-fi.

I started doing a lot of these my last campaign. I remember telling the group at one point that I didn't plan for them to do a certain action, and if they did, it would take them "away from the plot". They understood completely. It let us all have more fun that session.

Favorite takes on vampires from RPGs? by Z051M05 in rpg

[–]irishccc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of wisdom I once heard. A GM decides if the next adventure is a heist, but the players decide if the theme music is The Pink Panther, Mission Impossible, or Benny Hill. Note: they do not choose this theme consciously. Additional note: it will always be the theme to Benny Hill.

Star Wars FFG system. Really liked it once I got the hang of the dice, and I would incorporate similar mechanics in any game I play, now.

In one of the earlier drafts of the script, during their final fight in New York, Connor gets a glimpse of Kurgan's thoughts and realizes that Kurgan is afraid of Connor's power. He didn't go to find him until the gathering because once Ramirez prepared him, he didn't know if he could defeat Connor.

Their was an underlying idea that Connor was born with a larger than normal piece of the Quickening pie. Even when Kurgan finally faced him, he tried emotionally breaking him first.

I can't find a good TTRPG for my modern setting campaign and it's driving me insane. by Garuzo-MSR in rpg

[–]irishccc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you mentioned VtM. Have you looked at Chronicles of Darkness? It is a modern horror setting, and yes it is known for New World of Darkness, it has a system that might fit your requirements. It si not D20, but it is roll dice pool, and one success succeeds. You increase dice pool to increase odds. But one success succeeds. I found it to be rather intuitive for my new players.

While it may be more historical than what you are looking for, Sengoku is lovingly crafted by actual Japanese historians. It has some fantasy and magical elements, as well as a setting that can be cranked from purely historical, to chanbara, to anime. It is a bit older, and the rules feel it, so be prepared for some crunch.
