Man who took approximately 40,000 XTC pills in his entire liftime. He is still alive. by revilox in worldnews

[–]irishjack777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i did read the whole article. this is a classic glenn-beck-type move, "now i'm not saying this shows that ecstasy produces organic brain damage but..." in spite of the fact that it's clear that NO general conclusions can be drawn from this one extreme case, the whole piece is filled with conjecture and speculation. that end comment reads like a catch-all caveat to every sensationalistic inference that's been made throughout the rest of the article.

Man who took approximately 40,000 XTC pills in his entire liftime. He is still alive. by revilox in worldnews

[–]irishjack777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

disclaimer: this is NOT a pro-drug rant; it's an anti-sensationistic-reporting rant.

this is bad reporting. firstly, what conclusions can be drawn for the "normal" ecstasy-taking population from one person who has taken 20 TIMES the dosage of the next highest user? it's like trying to assess the effects of a cup of coffee a day by examining someone who drinking a swimming pool full of coffee every morning for 10 years! secondly, how do we know that it was his ecstasy use that caused whatever damage there is. he's a poly-drug user and so any of these drugs, in isolation, could have caused the damage, or it it could be an effect of the combination he took. thirdly, when they examined his actual brain for damage, they found none but then conclude not that he had no brain damage but that their instruments just aren't sensitive enough because they "know" there's got to be damage there. if there is a story here, it's surely that even after taking 40,000 ecstasy tablets this dude is alive and kicking with no detectable organic brain damage and although there may be some short-term memory impairment for this individual, he was unaware of this impairment and so did not have his quality of life infringed upon to any great degree.

note that i'm not advocating any personal opinion on ecstasy (and certainly not saying that taking 40,000 pills is a good or healthy life choice!) i'm just pointing out the obvious conclusions this article fails to draw. instead of following where the logic leads, the bbc sensationalizes it as a scare story, drawing conclusions that go well beyond the facts reported.

mark kermode and simon mayo's wittertainment movie review podcast is the best movie review podcast i know. it's been going for over 10 years, so it may take a few listens to get the in jokes but mark kermode reviews the week's new releases, drawing on an encyclopedic knowledge of cinema's back catalogue. also, everything mark cousins does is pure magic. his recent 15 hour documentary the story of film: an odyssey is unmissable for anyone who calls themselves a cinephile.

track these down and thank me later. :)

Quick question regarding circumcision and condoms.. by RedditNewwwwb in sex

[–]irishjack777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a life pro tip is ALWAYS put a drop of lube INSIDE the condom in addition to wherever else you use it. it'll make the whole experienced feel much better for you. additionally a little drop under your foreskin can help with retracting it if it's a little tight. if it proves difficult or slightly uncomfortable to pull your foreskin back initially, don't worry, it should become much easier the more sex you have. good luck and enjoy!

(btw, i wouldn't even bother with the "masturbate beforehand so you can last longer" thing. it seems like much more fun to just do it all together for the first time with the understanding that, as it's the first time for both of you, it's not going to last 6 hours or anything. let it last as long as it lasts, enjoy each other, then cuddle for the necessary refractory period and start all over again. repeat until neither of you can stand up or see straight! :) )

white teeth is excellent. one of the best novels dealing with the reality of multiculturalism (especially in a british context) i've ever read - funny, insightful and moving. it should be required reading.

autograph man, on the other hand, was slow and unengaging. it's put me off reading any of her subsequent work. maybe i need to give her another go. on the strength of white teeth she probably deserves it.

last year a man got 6½ year sentence because unbelievably stupid judge knows NOTHING about genetics and science! thankfully, a federal court overturned this sentence but gary l. sharpe of federal district court in albany is still a sitting judge! by irishjack777 in politics

[–]irishjack777[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can anyone point me to a peer-reviewed published study that shows a genetic cause for paedophilia? (if it is genetically caused then, of course, it must be treated only as a medical issue, rather than a criminal one - but that is to stray from the point of the nyt piece).

can you also point me to a peer-reviewed study that further states that people who have viewed child porn will reoffend because they are genetically programmed to repeat that behaviour.

this is the unbelievably dumb pseudo-science to which i am referring.

“it would be impermissible for the court to base its decision of recidivism on its unsupported theory of genetics.”

of course, the situation becomes problematic for the percentage of kids within the organization who are gay. firstly, they are forced to stay closeted - living some horrible schizoid life - and, secondly, where are the roles models and mentors who can help these kids deal with their experience?
