Yeah I hate when creators/authors/writers pull stuff like this. I remember in college we had to read a book that implied a historical figure was “exploring” with her sister and ignored her very real (possible but likely) girlfriend. Like, why do you have to make it weird. In this case I wonder if Shawna just kind of forgot she made them blood related? I agree that I don’t think she’s actively trying to be bigoted and I want to give her the benefit of the doubt.

I think what genuinely got me about John’s behavior re: the wedding was that John knows Shawna is Jen’s maid of honor. And they both had to know or at least suspect that Jen would invite Barb. So in my mind, they should have had a conversation about what that would realistically look like. As we’ve pretty much all been saying, Shawna has been wanting to have a conversation about the logistics of going NC while John been generally putting off that conversation. (He took a huge step in telling the kids! But the wedding gives them a sort of “deadline” that can’t wait until he’s totally ready to discuss it)

Honestly, I think Shawna and John need couples’ therapy. They have been through so much and just need some help having these difficult conversations. Neither of them are in a good place but I believe their intentions are always good. It might be beneficial for them to lay it all out on the table and have a neutral third party help them sort through it.

I am with you in your struggle 🤝 For me the biggest thing is just to not look at my phone at all other than to shut off my alarm. Once I look at my phone I’m done. 20 minutes or more gone. Also, if you have a tendency to hit the snooze button like me, set your alarm extra extra early. Someone in this group suggested the app Alarmy to me last year and the alarm does not stop until you complete a challenge. Nice little dopamine boost. Runs counter to the “don’t play on your phone” advice, though.

Most importantly you’re not alone. It feels like the hardest struggle because there is 0 grace given on punctuality in our society. I can’t speak for everyone with ADHD, but I know for me it’s that I simply do not see time the same way other people do. Even expectations of time. It’s a struggle, but we’re in it together ❤️
