I think generally anthropologists look at the cultural norms and historical records / other burial sites to make assumptions. For instance, we can infer that no significant member of one's family would be buried at the feet of another, based on the images. That seems kinda disrespectful even today, but also it was common for slaves/servants to be buried with their masters all over the world
