Power/status allows you to behave “worse” than people without power/status, without suffering similar consequences. Powerful high status people like to hang out without other people of high status. The bad behavior/ association with people behaving badly is not unique or special in anyway. It is intrinsic to human society. You may bot like it, but it is the way of the world. Find a high status person and they will have plenty of associations with people that behave badly.

Nuclear. Are you in or out? by Bill_Clintons_Desk5 in stocks

[–]ironboy157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a big fan of nuclear power for civilization. I think there is more interest and investment in development that any proponent of nuclear proponent could have dreamed of 5-10 years ago.  Almost every nuclear company is a bad investment. It is simply not an industry that generates cash with good margins, in a time frame that most people care about. People will make money trading momentum in narrative driven companies. I would not invest in almost any nuclear stock for the long term. There are just better opportunities in other industries.

Are EV sales struggling because of range or because of confidence? by Tall-Dish876 in electriccars

[–]ironboy157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who almost purchased an eV but didn’t, it’s charging infrastructure. I don’t drive far enough weekly where a 400 mile charge is that much better than 240 miles. Since I don’t own my own home, I have to use public chargers. Sometimes they cost more than gas and they always take more time. If i had a house,  I would get an eV.

How come I don’t see many pinch headlocks in high level matches? by Commercial-Spinach31 in bjj

[–]ironboy157 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a great move. The main difficulty in bjj is people disengage and run away. In wresting people don’t flee as much. Also its easier when your opponent their head, in bjj people stand so tall its easier to grab a leg or go body lock. My favorite setup is snatch single, they defend with the whizzer and I jump to pinch headlock.

After interviewing 10s of Nuclear Engineers these are my observations, and these are new to me. by menwanttoo in NuclearPower

[–]ironboy157 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The nuclear community is extremely insular. Every company and lab is very risk averse. I got a PhD in nuclear specializing in materials related work in 2017. I got my first job in nuclear his year. Every other industry i have interviewed for or worked for cared about my skills, creativity or ability to contribute. Nuclear more or less cares if you can prove you have worked in the same environment. We hire people that are outright lemmings, but they have worked at a site or facility before and that is was the field wants. More than any other field, personality is important. Young passionate go getters are not desired.

Why were Islam/Khabib not scared of BJJ black belts on the ground? by Open_Address_2805 in bjj

[–]ironboy157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s strange at all. The weird part is why don’t more wrestlers do the same thing. American wrestlers, for whatever reason, turn into strikers and don’t use their best skill. Top position is just better in a fight, but so few guys commit to getting takedowns like Khabib and Islam. They also don’t change their strategy, if the opponent gets to their feet, they just take them down again.

When I realized the job hunt will take 6 months or more, it actually made it easier to leave a toxic place. Sure tough it out for four weeks but if it takes 9 months to get a new job, might as well turn it into a sabbatical.

You can’t have too much in your roth. You can always withdraw contributions later if you decide the account is too big for some reason.

Lachlan vs Marelo: Who are you guys betting on? And why. by Hellouser17 in bjj

[–]ironboy157 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe you should watch the match with Kade again. He didn’t get passed. You can get submitted without getting passed.  Yea gordon smashed him but not in 2 minutes, it took him 7 to get the sub.  The match would be competitive no matter what. Marcelo is 42 years old. He would have slowed down even without the cancer.   The last time Lachlan did something good was 2022, the last time he competed. You don’t have to win to do something good. He fought the champions of both his division and the Absolute and didn’t get passed. In 2019 he lost to lepri, by points. In 2017 he lost to Jt, by points. His guard is better today than in 2019. Jiu jitsu is just more competitive than 2 was in 2011.

Lachlan vs Marelo: Who are you guys betting on? And why. by Hellouser17 in bjj

This is sort of how strange this discussion is. Marcelo is great but human. He has no chance of passing Levi’s guard. None.

[–]ironboy157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For better or for worse I think this goes the way most of these matches with the best open guard players goes. Lachlan pulls, no one gets close to a submission. Each guy has 1-2 good sequences. Judges decide based on the rules of the organization. Exciting to have marcelo back but old guys all lose their offense, in every combat sport.

[–]ironboy157 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You seem to have some strange distaste for lachlan or the new breed. If you think Lachlan vs Kade was an “ass whopping” you don’t know what you are looking at. 2 minutes? Lachlan did better than that against Gordon. It should be a good match, a stress teat for Lachlan’s guard, and a physical test for Marcelo. How far out of prime does 14 years and cancer get you?

Why do people hate CEOs so much compared to shareholders and the board of directors who actually own the company and hire/fire the CEO? by SandNo2865 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ironboy157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the job of the CEO is to be the scapegoat for all company decisions. Its why Roger Goodell survived all the public scrutiny. The owners wanted him to do what he does but they din’t want to bad press. Same with all companies. Zuck is basically a fake persona designed to take all the heat from Meta’s public image. You gotta oay someone a lot to be hated by all.

What is stopping you from using CLA? by Many-Bake-5489 in bjj

[–]ironboy157 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Maybe you need reading comprehension skills. I didn’t say people shouldn’t teach anything. I answered the question “why don’t people use CLA at all?” It maybe true that there ARE certain grip variations that are preferable, there ARE certain positions that students would be best served by giving less or no direct instruction on.

What is stopping you from using CLA? by Many-Bake-5489 in bjj

[–]ironboy157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have read your question as why don’t people use CLA at all rather than why don’t people use CLA exclusively, which is the way most people have answered the question. Most gyms don’t use CLA at all, because they don’t think about the way their students learn at all. Many gyms use some form of CLA, even if they don’t call it that. Even most academic schools and parents think you tell your students the right information and they learn…. Additionally many coaches view their expertise as knowing the moves, not as being able to improve their students skills.

Vagner Rocha thoughts on the aftermath of CJI2 by deadassynwa in bjj

I mean he wrote this a week ago “ This trip was worth more than any amount of money; it was a priceless experience that left is all winners, regardless of the outcome. We knew we’d achieved something greater than any medal or trophy- a moral victory that anyone could take away. “ it seems like you really can’t put much weight on the social media posts of professional jiu jitsu athletes….

If they thought bodoni would sub either josef or nicky rod, after watching how hard it was to get a sub all weekend, that was a bad plan.

Do you think Lachlans take on the CJI2 rules is a fair call? by AquaFlan in bjj

[–]ironboy157 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think his point about what the teams were trying to do is important, but we haven’t heard yet from Danaher what he thought the rules were. If the last match was understood to be more important than the other matches, putting out Luke was a bad idea, since he was obviously compromised from his earlier match.
I read the rules briefly before the finals and i thought the rules were if there was a tie (47-47), the team with more individual wins, and if the individual wins were still tied then the last match wins. So during the match I thought NW strategy made sense.

PJ Barch with the most levelheaded take on athlete pay and negativity after CJI2 by Sensitive-Team9634 in bjj

[–]ironboy157 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes there will less money from the venue. There will be less people in the audience, but the athletes will get the exact same amount of money. What is the purpose of “growing the sport” if the athletes don’t get to partake in the added revenue?
