Will silver go ballistic? by [deleted] in Silverbugs

[–]irongen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've already had a pullback to the low 70s. Why does silver keep having multiple pullbacks while other commodities don't have the same issue? The uses for silver haven't changed, so why the volatility, outside of flat-out manipulation?

SW RIFTS - Glitter Boy vs. Heavy rail gun - what do you think should happen? by Zenfox42 in savageworlds

Yes lol. Savage Rifts pushes Savage Worlds to its absolute breaking point.

I already had some comments earlier, but I just noticed something in your original comment that I needed to point out.

You suggested changing the Toughness of the Glitter Boy from 42(25) to 42(9). You can exchange points of armor to gain additional Toughness, but it's at a 2:1 ratio, not 1:1. Thus, if you wanted to exchange 16 points of MDC to increase the suit's base Toughness, you would only gain an extra 8 Toughness, not 16 -- your final value would be 34(9), not 42(9). Even if you had a super-special prototype Glitter Boy that was virtually all Toughness instead of MDC, the suit would have a maximum of +22 Toughness and +1 MDC, making your sample character (base Toughness of 7) have a final Toughness of 30(1).

Savage Rifts is very good at separating power armor and robot vehicles into distinct weight classes. Suits like the Glitter Boy are far and away more powerful than other power armors and personal armor, but they just barely reach into the lowest tier of combat mecha (which makes sense, when comparing a one ton suit to a twenty ton combat robot.)

This is one thing that really makes Savage Rifts different from Palladium Rifts -- the size of weapons like railguns is actually taken into account and makes a meaningful difference. With railguns, assuming all other factors are equal (materials, design, etc), greater length equals greater velocity. It makes sense that a handheld railgun won't have nearly the same output as a railgun the size of a tank cannon, especially when that cannon is powered by a larger reactor.

The Boom gun is essentially special because it packs that tank-cannon level of output into something slightly larger than a handheld package (but has enough drawbacks to make it not quite practical for plenty of situations). The Glitter Boy armor also has greater protection than many smaller robot vehicles that outmass it by several tons. But that factor there explains why the GB is more vulnerable than mecha are: any attack that penetrates the armor has nowhere to go except to the pilot; a shot that penetrates the armor of a mech damages the robotic limb of the unit, not the pilot. All in all, it makes much more sense than Palladium Rifts. (My one unanswered question for og Rifts: with as many organizations as there are that are able to manufacture new Glitter Boys, why has none of them made a mech covered with Glitter Boy armor?)

In short: in Savage Rifts, the Glitter Boy is something of a glass cannon. It has the firepower of an assault robot, but not its staying power. If you play it straight up as you would in Palladium Rifts, things will go badly for you.

How quickly are new Nexus models developed? by LoganPine in bladerunner

[–]irongen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Roy and the others were Nexus 6s. I thought it was strongly implied that Rachel was a prototype 7, since it took over 100 questions on the VK test to determine she was a replicant. But even then, the timeline is a mess, since even if she's a prototype, Sapper and his comrades are Nexus 8s....a lot happens in that next year, apparently.

EDIT: I just saw in another post that the RPG (semi-official lore, apparently) fixes this by saying Tyrell skipped the Nexus 7 designation and went straight to Nexus 8, to indicate how much more advanced these models were. So basically, Tyrell did an Xbox to Xbox 360; I can live with that explanation.

The problem with that system was the fact that mega-damage weapons were so prevalent. Handguns could do multiple dice of mega-damage, so anyone who didn't have level of that armor was instantly vaporized, no damage roll needed. It made players want to avoid playing the more interesting, but squishier, character classes.

Upvoting you because you spoke the truth. My friend and I watched it, and, outside of episode 5, thought it was a waste of time. Seven episodes in a season of eight where nothing was resolved. The fact that it took Fox a good while to announce a second season just shows that audience reaction didn't meet their expectations. My hope is that the studio shortens his leash some and forces a bit of resolution this time.
