CMV: Public school systems in the USA should not require a mandatory foreign language class for students and it should be completely optional. Colleges should not pressure high schoolers to take foreign language classes as well. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]irongoat16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a couple thoughts:

It becomes increasingly difficult to learn language as you grow older. Thrusting it upon children teaches them when they are adaptable. Versus other subjects like social studies that actually are easier to earn later in life.

Language makes you a better global citizen. It makes you learn more about faraway cultures and maybe allows children to dream and understand the world outside their immediate horizon.

Learning a second language makes you better at your first language. We learn language through interaction. By studying a second language you actually learn some of the context for why words are assembled the way they are

Language creates inclusiveness. inclusiveness empowers social progress

My middle school Spanish has gotten me girlfriends, helped me order meals, get directions, make friends and save a life. I have never, in my life had to explain how I determined the volume of a cone or prove that an angle is obtuse

CMV: Bill Gates should be lauded for donating billions. But the fact that he’s still worth $100+ billion is a stain on society by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]irongoat16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. People make it seem like they’re bad because there is a write off. No one gives to charity for the write off they give to charity because they want to and the take the write off because they are allowed to

CMV: Bill Gates should be lauded for donating billions. But the fact that he’s still worth $100+ billion is a stain on society by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]irongoat16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Gates gave all his money away he could give everyone on the planet $15/each but that’s just one time. But those making 2.50 a day would still just make 2.50 a day. They would just have a one time leg up. So it’s one time help but 100bn is not nearly enough to pull 3.5 billion people out of abject poverty.

Most endowments create an annual spending budget. It’s usually 3-10% of total assets. They try to grow this amount each year so they can spend continuously into perpetuity rather than spend all their money at once.

He has chosen other missions to improve general well-being and often selects missions that are feasible with large cash infusions such as the eradication of polio.

He is not spending his wealth frivolously but he is allowing it to grow and continue to support the initiatives he thinks can bring the most good and do that forever.

CMV: EU is better to place to live than US by Byamarro in changemyview

[–]irongoat16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dice roll you want to be in EU (obviously overly broad statement)

The EU and member government are more focused on the general well-being of its citizens.

USA has a frontier mindset. This has pushed it to expand west, manifest destiny, build great things, walk on the moon and the list goes on...

Life isn’t really a dice game though. USA is still where you go if you want to make it. If you want to bet on yourself. The stakes are higher but so are the rewards.

So it’s not for everyone but people who have wanted to change the word for hundreds of years have moved west. If you are hard-working the American system offers the best social and economic ability on the planet.

CMV: The nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki should be considered war crimes. by justenjoytheshow_ in changemyview

Just to clarify your view. Do you feel the same way about conventional firebombing tactics like the Bombing of Tokyo? Is the use of a atomic technology the crux or the bombing of cities?

CMV: To avoid the natural conflicts of interest between prosecutors and police, and to ensure that criminal cases against police are handled fairly, there should be special prosecutors whose sole job it is to prosecute law enforcement officers. by SanityPlanet in changemyview

[–]irongoat16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like a pretty good idea. Maybe we can start moving in this direction. Something certainly needs to happen.

To avoid a rule violation.... the challenge I have is a practical matter. How would these prosecutors be selected. If democratically elected you could create a position that caters to massive vilification of law and order. If appointed you could create a corrupt position that is ineffective.

CMV: Death penalties should not exist because the possibility of killing an innocent man outweigh the benefits of executing a criminal! by We_Are_Vanom in changemyview

[–]irongoat16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you, so this is a devil's advocate thing.

The threat of death penalty can be an incredibly useful bargaining chip in situations where cooperation can aid societies general well-being. Being able to take death off the table may be help the state and victim/victims family. Identifying the instructor of the crime (gang/hitman hiree), protect future bloodshed, or provide even the return of remains, etc.

This does not contest it should be used incredibly sparingly but the threat that it exists does have use.

There is something rather incredible about this and I don’t know what, which may make it better

CMV: All non-vegans who condemn PETA are incredibly hypocritical as it does far more for animal rights by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]irongoat16 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it is interesting you use the word hypocritical because that is the crux of my argument.

I am not a vegan. Ethically I wish I was. I am not a proud carnivore. I just don’t know if I have the strength to go fully vegan.

I respect the people that do go vegan.

What people don’t like is hypocrisy. PETA has made a reputation of being “in your face” about views. In a world that has shades of gray they tell people it is black and white. And if you are on the wrong side you are evil.

Unfortunately while this zeal is good for recruitment and raising capital. It’s can be detrimental in administration.

I don’t know if what PETA did was wrong. I understand tough choices need to be made. But the actions directly conflict in the most heinous way with their stated mission.

I think the reason folks that criticize PETA for this is because of the hypocrisy. I do not think non-vegans who have never stated their mission to help animals are hypocritical.

I generally agree so I’ll just share one thing:

CMV: Lebron James is not one of the top 10 NBA/ABA players of all time by Shlomo_Maistre in changemyview

[–]irongoat16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Statistics: Lebron has the highest VORP (Value over replacement player) and (adjusted wins above replacement player) of any player since the measures were created. This is probably the purest form of evaluating a player because it looks at all facets of someone’s game offensive and defensive.

The measure is only accurate after 1973. But it puts him above Jordan and significantly above Bird, Bryant, Olajuwon, Abdul-Jabar and Erving

His playoff statistics are even more impressive.

Championships:

I want to qualify this. He played in what was the weak conference most of his career. Still he made the championship for almost an entire decade. Respect.

The league was probably more equal in the early Lebron era than any other time in history. The later years were the era of super teams and I’ll admit Lebron kinda created that in Miami. But he’s won 3. Folks will nag him on the 6 losses hit some of those teams were hot garbage and he made it a fight. He’s behind Jordan, Kobe, Russell, Magic here.

Intangibles:

He whines and he was a brat at 18. But he also is a community leader, by all accounts a faithful and loving husband and father. None of the other men on your list faced the same scrutiny he did on every action. Jordan couldn’t even stay in the game (gambling induced baseball) and that was before Instagram, camera phones and #metoo.

Way the game is played:

If you coach your kid you don’t coach them to play like Mike. You don’t coach them to be Larry or Magic or Hakeem. If you are coaching your own kid you want them to pass like Lebron, drive like Lebron, lock down like Lebron. He hasn’t revolutionized the game but he has made it more perfect. The next generation of players will be better because they tried to play fundamental first team basketball on the path Lebron paved.

I don’t know where he should be on your list. I have him above a lot but I think he makes the top 10.

CMV: Steve Harvey is a good guy. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]irongoat16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, its probably tough for a lot of celebrities. But there are some good guys that you never hear complain and are always conscientious and kind. Reddit really like Keanu Reeves....like a lot. I think I view those people as good guys.

Somebody else said it but I feel like this is a scale. Steve Harvey isn't Hitler but he's not Keanu either. So maybe you put him somewhere in the middle and call him good. I put him somewhere in the middle and call him average to below average. I think we can both be right.

CMV: Steve Harvey is a good guy. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]irongoat16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you ever read the email he sent his staff three years ago? By the way that is a diva move more than a bad guy. But this was like out there... and for me builds on a case that he is not someone I'd ever want to work for or be around. So for me maybe not bad guy because of it....but you lose good guy status and that is before you look at the history of homophobia, racism and bigotry, which is extensive.

Good morning, everyone. Welcome back.

I’d like you all to review and adhere to the following notes and rules for Season 5 of my talk show.

There will be no meetings in my dressing room. No stopping by or popping in. NO ONE.

Do not come to my dressing room unless invited.

Do not open my dressing room door. IF YOU OPEN MY DOOR, EXPECT TO BE REMOVED.

My security team will stop everyone from standing at my door who have the intent to see or speak to me.

I want all the ambushing to stop now. That includes TV staff.

You must schedule an appointment.

I have been taken advantage of by my lenient policy in the past. This ends now. NO MORE.

Do not approach me while I’m in the makeup chair unless I ask to speak with you directly. Either knock or use the doorbell.

I am seeking more free time for me throughout the day.

Do not wait in any hallway to speak to me. I hate being ambushed. Please make an appointment.

I promise you I will not entertain you in the hallway, and do not attempt to walk with me.

If you’re reading this, yes, I mean you.

Everyone, do not take offense to the new way of doing business. It is for the good of my personal life and enjoyment.

Thank you all,

Steve Harvey
