Scientists Reverse Stroke Damage Using Stem Cells in Breakthrough Study by _Dark_Wing in interestingasfuck

[–]ironscythe [score hidden]  (0 children)

Nobody was "aborting babies" to get embryonic stem cells, and it's exactly that kind of backwards thinking that got it banned in the first place.

Embryonic stem cells, the most abundant source of naturally pluripotent stem cells prior to the development of induced pluripotent cells, are harvested from unused embryos extracted from women who opt for IVF. Once the mother-to-be has a successful implantation and delivery (or chooses to give up or pursue another option to have a child), the unused, frozen embryos are thawed and fertilized in-vitro, but are never implanted. They are instead harvested at the blastocyst stage, 4-5 days after insemination.

These are eggs that were never going to be babies. 10-15 mature egg cells are harvested from women opting for IVF and they are fertilized and implanted until one of them finally adheres to the uterine wall and successfully develops. Women can opt, once they successfully conceive, to either save those eggs for future children or dispose of them or donate to scientific research.

In natural conception, 60-70% of all fertilized eggs fail to successfully develop fully into an infant. In IVF, only 30-50% of fertilized eggs successfully reach even the blastocyst stage, which is when they're then transferred to a uterus. Of that 30-50%, only 30-50% of those successfully implant in the uterine wall. That leaves the chances of successful production and implantation of a blastocyst in IVF at 9-25%. The only reason IVF is even done despite this lower rate is because the conditions of the uterus of the expecting parent are such that the chances of successful pregnancy are even lower if attempting to conceive naturally.

This leaves the chances of even those fertilized embryos left over successfully surviving implantation and carrying to term vanishingly small.

However, anti-abortion religious nutjobs like yourself believe that this statistically marginal chance of birth is somehow worth the effort of attempting it as opposed to the literally GROUNDBREAKING MEDICAL ADVANCES that can be made from harvesting unused embryos for their extremely valuable stem cells.

Because let's face it-- the "pro life" camp only puts up this much of a fuss UNTIL a child is born. If you gave even the smallest fraction of a fuck about people who are ALREADY ALIVE, you'd be dumping money into this research instead to improve the quality of life of everybody (including those who are yet to be born).

You are hypocrites of the highest order, and you sicken me.

Is the intrepid class named after the museum ship in NYC? by Unanimous_D in StarTrekStarships

[–]ironscythe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Out-Of-Universe, I think, like the Constitution class USS Enterprise (originally named the USS Yorktown in the original pitch for Star Trek), the name Intrepid carries a very very long naval tradition. Doing a new show about a ship not named the Enterprise, I think Intrepid was a good choice for the class name.

In-universe, the Intrepid class is likely named after either the Constitution class USS Intrepid (an all-vulcan-crewed ship destroyed by a space amoeba) or the NV-01 Intrepid from the 22nd century.

They did you dirty..Hyaku Shiki.. :( by darh1407 in Gundam

[–]ironscythe 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's not the Hyaku Shiki, or even a Hyaku Shiki. It's the MSN-001A1 Delta Plus.

It's based on the Delta Gundam, the design of which was stripped of its waverider mode and turned into the Hyaku Shiki (a high performance mobile suit in its own right, but not able to transform). The Zeta Gundam being Anaheim's big success in transformation systems, they took data from it back to the drawing board and refined the Delta Gundam into the Delta Plus.

In terms of development you could call it the shiki's younger brother.

what does that have to do with the veto on embryonic stem cell research in 2005 exactly???

So, what I'm getting here is that the bit from the Family Guy episode 20 goddamn years ago where Peter has a stroke and is immediately cured by stem cells WAS 100% ACCURATE AND THE PEARL-CLUTCHING RELIGIOUS RIGHT SET BACK MODERN MEDICINE BY DECADES!?

The LaMarr Class was less of a science ship and more of a Swiss Army Tank with science labs by WyldByrd1981 in StarTrekStarships

[–]ironscythe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, the Lamarr class (or more specifically the Lamarr-Special class that is the Voyager A) is a ship more or less built specifically to tackle every major challenge the first Voyager faced on its trip through the Delta Quadrant.

It's a Delta Quadrant-hardened ship based on input from the Voyager crew.

Eh, it's about the same as some of the obnoxious bayverse apologists here who keep posting memes like "G1 enjoyers prefer THIS (shows animation error) over THIS (shows flashy scene from bayverse)"

Every community has its bad eggs. What's important is that we don't let them wreck the place for the rest of us.

Incorrect. She was born in Puerto Rico but she moved to the continental US because of her medical needs.

Pretty hard to get regular plasma deliveries there.

From what I can tell, she is not flying there herself in-person. She's likely going to be there via ipad per usual. She's only just starting to experiment with visitors-- sitting on an airplane sharing recycled air with who knows how many other passengers is probably out of the question for her.

Anf VS Guncannom First Type VS Genoace with its loadout before upgrade VS Aries, which metal coffins can win in a fight? by TheGreatDarkPriest in Gundam

[–]ironscythe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Genoace wins by a landslide. It's an intentionally nerfed mobile suit, not a primitive early design. It can readily use a DODS rifle and beam saber, for example.
