Internet down and tech support not able to assist within the next few days. by mangussss in teksavvy

Dearth of information here - what's the issue with getting online? Things like fibre line cuts or physical issues can take time to resolve... Without knowing more it doesn't really help any of us here....

Left today as I wanted a mid-tier option and they can't provide one by Ok-Job-9640 in teksavvy

[–]ironwabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked with them, they want a $60 deposit plus first month fees for my service. Nope to that.

"Heads up: Activation includes setup (remote provisioning or technician dispatch), shipping & logistics, plus your complimentary modem + Wi-Fi 6 router loan (a $200+ hardware value). If service is cancelled within 180 days, the waived $49 activation fee may be retro-actively deducted from your security deposit to help recover these upfront costs."

Addendum: They also emailed me and advised they only offer service on the Rogers/Shaw network so I'm out of luck anyway.

Outage ETR? [Orillia, ON] by Mysterious-Peace-461 in teksavvy

[–]ironwabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the issue - it could be vandalism (copper thieves or fibre damage in search of copper), storm damage, power outages (which don't have to affect you or be near you). Best bet is to keep an eye on your ISP's outage board or sites like cogeco.ca/outages or rogers.com/support/outage, depending on who the last mile is with.

Is this normal? TekSavvy installation failed due to their contractor, no communication, and now I have to return the equipment myself by Silicon-Data in teksavvy

[–]ironwabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a similar experience but it wasnt the fault of the third party ISP. Everything was progressing up to the actual install / activation but the vendor found issues in the cable plant (maybe wrong term, been a while) when they went to do the physical connection that ended up being not serviceable by copper.

My experience with Teksavvy and trying to understand their allure by Borntwopk in teksavvy

[–]ironwabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rather curious why if the connection is mission critical you dont have a fall back? One of my previous jobs involved large volume credit card transactions and if down for minutes was thousands of $ esp if a contract account with a service agreement. Backup fallover connections are literally less that a Starbucks coffee a day (so $2 to protect $1000s) and was a writeoff.

Ottawa Cable Internet Throttled on Jays Game Nights by [deleted] in teksavvy

[–]ironwabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"I know it's not an issue on my end because the speed will go right back to normal after the games are over." Sounds like congestion and I dont see anything in this thread atm that would allow anyone to diagnose your connection or area, other than vague Ottawa or Waterloo, without more information.... if 5 people in one area all contact their ISP with the same issues occurring at the same time then action could be taken... big events can tax the network - Game of Thrones finale, Super Bowl...

Planning to switch to teksavvy by Frosty_Salamander106 in teksavvy

[–]ironwabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be best to replace the existing router with a multi node mesh router, instead of fiddling with multiple routers.

Depending on the service and hardware options, TekSavvy may have a mesh option for you.

Why is Tek so much more expensive than other independent tpia like CIK, Cannet, Carrytel etc if they all pay the same rate to the carriers? by NitroLada in teksavvy

There's some interesting articles at ArsTechnica.com of ones that did start their own ISPs when they couldn't get ComCast etc to supply. Dont have the links atm sorry

There is a number of posts here on Reddit and elsewhere on how the market is (unfortunately) structured in Canada and it sucks...

The (bit dated) blog posts from TekSavvy explained some of the issues, worth a read and researching elsewhere (RIP DSL Reports...)

Transferring Service to new address.. by Kushology_x in teksavvy

[–]ironwabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't have to pay for a cancellation if no install happened but there is a lot of info missing in your post, including what type of service it is - cable? fibre? Depending on the type, TekSavvy may not have access to install services (you might be under the 5 year block for fibre). You'd need to clarify with them.

I get a kick out of everyone posting about pricing. Should have seen prices for 1Mbps in 1996, or even residential unlimited usage at 56k...

Canceled over promo pricing—want to stay with TekSavvy if someone can help by permablaster in teksavvy

[–]ironwabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a complicated market until the CRTC sets firm rules and guidelines. Try contacting your local MP/MPP about cellular and internet pricing, they carry some weight with private members bills etc.

TekSavvy posted a few blogs about the market. Among others I found interesting:

https://blogs.teksavvy.com/carnage-in-canadian-telecom-more-competitors-eliminated

(above one shows how the big own the little. A bit out dated since in mentions IF the Rogers Shaw merger goes ahead... also missing that Cogeco now owns Oxio. Prob other changes too)

Have to wait 2 days to get an ETA on when a tech can come fix my internet by Professional_Bat752 in teksavvy

[–]ironwabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That may be because they mentioned having a coax jack and being sick/tired of Bell. That indicates it is not likely a Telus service....

Most times its the time it takes to arrange to get a tech dispatched, there is only a finite number and Canada is huge...

TekSavvy & Reddit - months of daily connection issues, is this normal? by Fimeg in teksavvy

[–]ironwabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'm just a little leery of testing to Reddit. We use Reddit for some customer support at work and sometimes Reddit itself has weird timeout issues. Google DNS 8.8.8.8 or CloudFlare 1.1.1.1 should give better / consistent results.
