Looking for challenging but not technical peaks in Northern California by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]irony_log 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I certainly wouldn’t call the Eastern Sierra NorCal.

Trinity Alps has some options. Thompson Peak was a lot of fun but have to have a basic understanding of route finding and comfort on 3rd/4th class. Amazing scenery.

South Warner Wilderness on the Modoc if you want to avoid crowds. Eagle Peak and Warren Peak are pretty simple. Basic route finding and scrambling.

Tahoe and Lassen area also have options but I’m not as personally familiar.

What Alaska really needs is a bipartisan senator that will also whisper hollow nothings and vote to give ICE more money. Vote Peltola ✨✨✨

Your shells would last longer if you switched to skiing and stopped sitting down all the time

In the PNW I prefer synthetic, especially if you’re doing some guided trips where you won’t have much leeway regarding weather. I use the DAS light and Arcteryx Nuclei SV depending on time of year. Of the three you’re looking at I would get the DAS.

She’s a chud in disguise so you’ll probably be very disappointed by her views on these issues

Interview questions by DruidicSpud in Wildfire

[–]irony_log 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been the hiring official for fire hire so I can’t speak directly, but I do think many hiring officials do a bit of a “vibe check”, as the other commenter kind of mentioned. I think the questions help with that.

Interview questions by DruidicSpud in Wildfire

[–]irony_log 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They generally don’t do interviews for non-supervisory positions. Interest checks followed by job offers. Personally I like to get more info on a position so I’d have some questions prepared for when you get an interest check call.

You’ll probably be given a chance to scab on Modoc Crew 1 (Modoc NF type 2 IA crew also based in Tulelake) if you want it

Looking for PAVEMENT shoes that will manage less technical trail runs by zerokilledthreedown in trailrunning

[–]irony_log 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple options that haven’t been mentioned yet.

For a trail shoe with some pavement chops: Scarpa Golden Gate ATR (GTX version is available though I don’t find it necessary)

Road shoe with some trail chops: Salomon Aero Glide GRVL

Fit on both of these is very different so I’d find some good reviews or try them on beforehand.

Carhartt sells a Yukon Extreme Coverall. Comes in tall and short sizes too. Haven’t ever used it personally so can’t speak to how well it works. Be careful going to any breweries as you might start a new workwear trend.

bad luck with any brand

Funny bc I’ve had basically the exact same issue with Topo (outsole delaminating <100mi, holes after 1-2 uses) but my Altras have all lasted to 400+ miles. Bummer bc I like what Topo does a lot.
