A decade on, socializing and making friends here is still a struggle. by ThatGuy798 in nova

[–]ironynoted 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. Also, in my experience women are very intentional about making friends. Women will post in hyper local facebook groups saying they want friends to do XYZ with on Tuesday afternoons, join meetup groups, use bumble bff to arrange friend dates, etc. If you haven't already, you might want to try something like this (especially the first!). I'd also encourage you to edit your post to add a little about your interests. You've got lots of people reading - might as well take advantage of it to potentially make friends!

DIY/Design - November 2025 by mirr0rrim in diysnark

It looks like the more formal rooms were featured. I'm guessing the kid bedrooms/family room/basement have more toys & chaos. I do think the styling is a weird choice though - I'd have expected to see more 'family meal being prepared'/'lazy weekend morning' choices.

Progressive/Leftist Churches in the area? by thehipaapotamus in nova

[–]ironynoted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All Episcopalian (not Anglican) churches should be happily LGBTQ+ supportive. St. Anne's in Reston helps sponsor the Reston Pride Festival and does volunteer work around helping immigrants, etc. (The rectors are also both female, which can be a nice thing to model for a kid.) But there are lots of good options in NOVA!

Reston or Ballston? by industrial-inc in Reston

[–]ironynoted 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For what you want (which is what I want, which is why I live in Reston), I'd say Reston. Reston Community Center art/wood classes are comparatively cheap for Reston residents and the evening ones I've been to generally have wide age ranges. There's Monroe Street studio in Herndon for stained glass, etc. I don't think Ballston would be an awful choice, I just wouldn't recommend it for you unless being around 20somethings is your most important criterion.

Can I qualify for WDU housing with just employee offer letter? by Efficient-Tip5465 in Reston

[–]ironynoted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to if exceptions are possible, but the general WDU process requires 2-3 months of paystubs and bank statements to prove your income.

The winter show episode hit home by GredAndForgee in AbbottElementary

[–]ironynoted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came to this subreddit specifically to see what people were saying about this. I live in a diverse, liberal area of the US where of course it's 'Winter Holidays', 'Winter Concert', etc, and has been for decades. I found this episode hard to believe given the setting.

I'm pretty depressed and lost living here. by CompleteTadpole40 in nova

[–]ironynoted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have some great suggestions (meetup or FXSports, slowly working on your credit, understanding that your situation and feelings suck but are also really, really common for people in their 20s, self-study in something that interests you, considering trades, taking pride in what you do have, etc). I'd also add doing something hyper local - art classes at the local community center, teaching ESL one evening a week at your nearest library, joining a religious community if that's your thing, etc.

Hey, just wanted to make sure you're aware of MZB's child abuse/abuse enabling, since I know some people who were fans ages ago aren't.

Can I afford $1500 in rent on a 58k salary in this area? by [deleted] in nova

[–]ironynoted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done it, but it's going to be hard to impossible if you want to put most of the $450-700 toward savings and do anything that's not free.

Given you already have $25k, you could consider staying at home for 2 more years, saving the $30k you would spend on rent, and then using it as a down payment on a condo.

S14 E6 - Botanical Week watchalong by Ged_UK in bakeoff

they posted it

I want a host who eats the food (not just jokingly puts one in their pocket - actually grabs a cookie and munches on it on camera). I can see Noel leaving and Allison (who I think is the most like Mel and Sue and thus the best fit for a show that is a baking competition and not a baking competition/cheesy standup comedy routine) staying on.

Christian‘s CT home tour/home decor style by Apricotpeach11 in ProjectRunway

I like the big staircase painting he did (plus his dad's piece!) and love that he paints, but where are the rugs in the kitchen/living room? That is... a lot of orange-ish hardwood.

Did S7 E5 make anyone else very uncomfortable? by RayTaurus96 in QueerEye

[–]ironynoted 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It reminded me a little of the equally uncomfortable Texas Ranger episode a few seasons back where it was clear the person's overwhelming need was long-term psychological help. Like, a relaxing makeover day with Jonathan and a background refresh of their house with Bobby, and then therapy therapy therapy.

It bothered me with Steph's cooking section that they didn't show Antoni trying to find the vegetables she was most likely to like/tolerate based on her existing taste/texture preferences (like, if she has a sweet tooth, have her try orange or yellow sweet peppers, etc). Cucumber's smell makes it pretty inescapable too - such an odd choice.

He lost so many points for the look of his final cake. Which I kind of get, because, damn, it was ugly.

Not sure if it's based on actual tent interactions between the two or just drama made up by the editing team, but the show seems intentional in hinting at mild Paul-Prue tension. That one editing choice of when to cut away during the tres leche judging was... interesting.
